James Stewart, John Wayne, Vera Miles, John Carradine, Lee Van Cleef, Jeanette Nolan - Dir:John Ford A successful lawyer/politician flashes back to his early days in the West as a poor tenderfoot, bullied by a vicious outlaw and befriended by a sharpshooter, and the day the townsfolk hailed him as a hero. One of director John Ford's best westerns.

In John Ford's stark, melancholy swan song for the conventional frontier Western, aged Senator Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) returns to the small town of Shinbone with his wife, Hallie (Vera Miles), for the funeral of his friend, Tom Doniphan (John Wayne), where he recounts for reporters his relationship with the man. His arrival in the town years earlier as a newly minted lawyer had been welcomed with a vicious beating by Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin), a flamboyant thug hired by powerful business interests fearful of the lawyer's intentions to stump for statehood. Doniphan, a rancher and feared gunman, finds Stoddard unconscious, takes him into town, and continues to protect him, particularly after coming to realize that the woman he loves cares more for the lawyer. Despite Doniphan's warnings that the only law in the region comes at the end of a gun barrel, the stubborn lawyer insists on teaching the illiterate townspeople about the rule of law in a democratic society. When Stoddard is elected as the regional delegate to the territorial convention, Valance baits the politician, a notoriously inept gunman, into a showdown. The film, which plays like a Western version of Freud's CIVILIZATION AND ITS DISCONTENTS, reflects the aging director's ambivalence about many of the beliefs that had animated his earlier work. Shot on two soundstages because of a limited budget and Ford's poor health, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE blends a stripped-down look with an intentionally fractured, ambiguous narrative to stand as a haunting elegy for the fearless gunman, the endless wilderness, and the loss of freedom their vanishing betokens.

Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Reviews:

"...Director John Ford's last masterpiece, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, features a killer cast..." -- Mike Clark, USA Today

"[O]ddly stirring and ahead of its time."-- Gregory Kirschling, Entertainment Weekly

4 stars It's one the Duke's early films, no one was hotter!
This was once again one of John Wayne's best, along side James Stewart and one of the best directers to do a western, John Ford, "this will easily go down as one of the best". And let's not forget about O'le Pompey, he did great too.

5 stars An all-time classic western!!
One hears the word "classic" used every day to describe films, music, etc, and the word has been downgraded to mean almost anything. To a person of my age (50s) it rarely meets the description of anything produced in the movies or music these days (I did say rarely)! However, this film is in the eternal western top twenty! Great performances from Lee Marvin, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Vera Miles and the rest of the cast. I think I was in love with Vera Miles when I first saw the film. An over-looked performance by Andy Devine playing the ever hungry, but cowardly sheriff is another surprise – for an actor that usually spent his time in 'B'-movies. But back to the film, probably one of John Ford's greatest – a western with a difference – the opening scene, a senator travelling to a funeral sets the tone for a truly rivetting film – and just when you think the story has ended – it continues with another great twist! Buy this with confidence, but remember to keep the tissues handy (is it Kleenex in the USA?).

Academy-Award nominated actress Elisabeth Shue (LEAVING LAS VEGAS) is known primarily for her wide-ranging film work. But Shue was also a pioneer of sorts in the 1970s as a teenage soccer player who helped pave the way for girls to play high-school soccer. GRACIE is loosely based on Shue's life in suburban New Jersey, and stars Carly Schroeder (FIREWALL) as Gracie Bowen, a woman with a passion for soccer. But Gracie is overlooked by her domineering father (Dermot Mulroney), a former soccer star who feverishly coaches her three brothers, mostly focusing on the oldest sibling, Johnny (Jesse Lee Soffer). Johnny is the captain of Columbia High's soccer team and Gracie's biggest supporter and mentor, but his superstardom is tragically ended when he dies in a car accident. Since her high school does not have a girls' soccer team, Gracie decides to honor her brother's legacy by trying out for the boys' team, hoping to take her brother's place. Appalled by her outlandish suggestion, her family does not support her dream, and as a result she becomes reckless and defiant, hanging with the wrong crowd and neglecting her studies. Gracie's father recognizes what they need to do ...
