In 2002, alternative CCM rockers Switchfoot cribbed some wider exposure from Mandy Moore, contributing tracks to her film Walk to Remember. It was a good fit, as the film, like the Foot, strode toward the mainstream without forgetting its good-hearted ideals. They returned in February 2003 with the slick modern rock missive The Beautiful Letdown, which promptly blew up the Christian charts and garnered Switchfoot an armful of Dove Award nominations. But, issued through Columbia Records instead of Sparrow, it was clear Letdown had designs on something larger than the CCM market. Thus a year later, in 2004, Switchfoot issued the album again. It's the same, though the mix is slightly tweaked and an unremarkable DVD with videos and some unreleased stuff appears, hoping to appease those who bought the thing once already. Musically, the album is kind of all over the place. But it's always melodic and well paced, and carefully emulates what's already worked for adult alternative. So, while "Meant to Live" approaches the chunky grandeur of Fuel, "Gone" is a winking sing-song of a thing that owes a huge -- huge! -- debt to Sugar Ray. There's also stuff like "This Is Your Life" and "More Than Fine," where slick electronic treatments accentuate Jon Foreman's slightly Bono-ish vocals. It's all tinged with the spirituality that's been Switchfoot's m.o. since the beginning; however, the band's work is too easily hooky and mature not to find favor with secular audiences. The meanest thing you can say about a gorgeously layered ballad like "Dare You to Move" is that it's more of a nice, warm Tuesday evening than the wee hours of a greasy Saturday night. But there needs to be gradation like this in rock, bands on both the good and evil sides of the coin trying to hold it down. And for their part, for what they do, Switchfoot is very talented. Here's hoping their polished halo brings its gleam to the mainstream. ~ Johnny Loftus For a band who took their name from their beloved surfing hobby, Switchfoot are anything but posterboys for the slacker mindset. The San Diego quartet spent little time resting on the laurels of their Best Rock Gospel Album Grammy nomination for 2000's LEARNING TO BREATHE, opting for a tireless tour schedule instead. Their first offering with new label Red Ink finds the band further refining their pop-rock craft. Switchfoot's music makes no secret at making musical nods to their contemporaries, most notably Foo Fighters ("Ammunition"), Third Eye Blind ("Dare You To Move"), and Sugar Ray ("Gone"). With THE BEAUTIFUL LETDOWN, Switchfoot succeed at making a document reflecting on real life with a consistent undercurrent of hope and humility. Great songwriting makes it a standout rock album I normally think that Christian rock bands are pretty bad, but Switchfoot has me sold. Great songwriting, first rate production, and a rich, guitar-heavy sound have me hooked. An excellent find for those tired of rap rock that is too pervasive on the airwaves these days. Gospel music at it's best This is the fourth album from Rock Gospel band Switchfoot but unfortunately not their best effort but one the less still a good album and especially if like me you are an avid fan of the band.
If this your first taste of Switchfoot better to listen to "Learning to Breath" as an introduction to the band Submitted by ianwilliamson90 (Aberdeen Scotland UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

could do better 4 stars. there are a handful of good songs on this cd, and i love how they redid 2 of my favorite songs, dare you to move, and learning to breathe. but i fail to see how they comprise an album. albums tend to have themes. i dont see it. and the song order could have been better. they stuck a harsh "adding to the noise" in between two beautiful ballads, "on fire" and "twenty-four", for example. it was a poorly put together album, but the songs taken by themselves are really good. just not as an album.

While the title of this Aussie singer-songwriter's seventh album refers to the goddess of love, his vocal arrangements and inflection are at times deeply indebted to the king of 20th century folk, Bob Dylan--to be specific, the bluesy yearn of NEW MORNING. But the music itself is pure pop, owing to John Lennon ("Sing," "Song For The Divine Mother Of The Universe") and Queen ("Boy With A Barbie") as much as to contemporary reference points like Grandaddy ("Wake Up To America"). REBIRTH is a tribute to Lee's musical loves, and achieves its success reincarnating classic FM radio with lush, warm touches. There's no doubt that Ben Lee means well, intending this collection of sunny pop and singsong folk to bridge the chasm between genders and cultures across the world, as he truly does wonder "What's So Bad (About Feeling Good)?," the leadoff song that sets the tone for The Rebirth of Venus. Lee wonders what's wrong about a boy playing with a Barbie doll and sees nothing wrong with claiming "I'm a Woman Too," a piece of hippie-dippy pop that seeks to inherit the throne ...
