As wonderful and compelling as the Fugees were during their brief moment in the sun (circa 1996), it's difficult to make the case for a Fugees Greatest Hits. The trio only put out two records, the first a muddled attempt at weed-soaked hardcore, the second an excellent fusion of hip-hop and soul, so the obvious choice for record-buyers is that final full-length, The Score. This compilation includes seven tracks from The Score, prefacing it with two selections from the 1994 debut (Blunted on Reality) and tacking on Lauryn Hill's first solo recording, "The Sweetest Thing" -- originally on the Love Jones soundtrack and later included on her first album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. ~ John Bush

Greatest Hits album
$7.15 "Bills, Bills, Bills" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and for Best R&B Song.
"Say My Name" won the 2001 Grammy Award in the categories of Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and Best R&B Song. The song was also nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award in the categories of Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year.
With their second album, Writing's on the Wall, Destiny's Child still suffers from slightly uneven songwriting, but it's nevertheless an assured step forward for the girl group. Not only are they maturing as vocalists, they are fortunate to ...
| | Beyonce Dangerously In Love CD (2003)
Greatest Hits CD music
$9.69 DANGEROUSLY IN LOVE won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. "Dangerously In Love" won for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. "The Closer I Get To You" won for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals. "Crazy In Love" won for Best R&B Song and for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. The song was also nominated for Record of the Year.
Besides deft, pitch-perfect hit songs, the talented if volatile Destiny's Child was remarkable for its unpredictability, not always a defining characteristic of mainstream R&B. While there was certainly a formula at play in the songs, the structure was subtly unstable, never following standard progressions. Yet most of their singles flew to the top of both the pop and R&B charts. While DC was generally a collective, Beyonce Knowles clearly emerged as the most high-profile member, even before major turns on the big screen, signaling anticipation for her debut album, DANGEROUSLY IN LOVE.

| | Trey Songz I Gotta Make It CD (2005)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$11.45 Any young R&B performer that can get Aretha Franklin to introduce his debut album must be doing something right. Although Trey Songz's I GOTTA MAKE IT opens with "A Message from Aretha," an uplifting bit of advice from the soul legend, the record isn't an old-school outing; this is hip-hop-inflected contemporary R&B in the R. Kelly vein.
The smooth, catchy single "Gotta Make It" appears twice here, first as a collaboration between the gently crooning Songz and the lightning-fast rapper Twista, and later as a remix featuring more words of wisdom from Franklin and the steady flow of Juvenile. Other highlights include the charming slow jam "Gotta Go" and the infectiously percussive "Just Wanna Cut." Though Songz is just one of many up-and-comers in early-2000s R&B, he downplays swaggering bravado in favor of a more amiable confidence, and this quality makes ...
| | Kirk Franklin Hero CD (2005)
Greatest Hits songs
$9.75 Though testimonies of faith and questions of morality are still at the heart of Kirk Franklin's message, 2005's HERO represents something of a musical departure for the gospel superstar. Recorded with a full orchestra--complete with lush strings and driving horns--HERO is one of Franklin's most musically ambitious outings.
Featuring guest appearances by Stevie Wonder ("Why"), Dorinda Clark-Cole ("Hero"), and Yolanda Adams ("Afterwhile"), not to mention a song that utilizes a Tears for Fears sample ( "Let It Go"), the album offers plenty of variety, and a few surprises, in addition to its large-scale arrangements. Franklin manages to integrate these new elements perfectly into the celebratory and healing music on which he's built his career.

Greatest Hits album
$16.89 World events in the first years of the new millennium prompted many people to re-evaluate life's purpose and the individual's place in the universe. Perhaps not so coincidentally, gospel music continued to find ever-greater acceptance among mainstream music listeners. For the uninitiated, however, the sheer variety and volume of faith-based music can be extremely daunting. That's where the Platinum-selling WOW GOSPEL series comes in. WOW GOSPEL 2003, like ...
