This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Dredg is one of those rare bands who truly cannot be categorized. Gavin Hayes' vocals cascade like a waterfall over a sea of scratching Latin rhythms, dulcimers, guitars in odd time signatures, and prog rock-inspired drums. Hayes shares his penchant for Bulgarian chants in "Triangle" and "Same Ol' Road." "Whoa Is Me" could provide the soundtrack to all things haunted. Whether it's a piano and strings or Cure-influenced (specifically the Cure's "Fascination Street") guitars, instruments fill the time between songs on El Cielo. They offer a respite from the monotony and the slow-fast-slow style of songwriting. In an odd moment at the end of "Whoa Is Me," a soft-spoken public radio DJ speaks of a jazz number from 1944. The full-throttle rocker "It Only Took a Day" is one of the highlights. El Cielo is unlikely to become a hit on commercial radio, but perhaps Dredg could find their niche on college stations. ~ Christina Fuoco

A great new band to be discovered Hauntingly sad is an apt description for "El Cielo". It's not that the album is depressing, just that it isn't exactly uplifting either. This is the kind of album that causes you to become reflective without knowing you're doing just that. Pink Floyd's great works always had the same effect on me. The music is a sort of alternative / progressive mix, except that the presentation is too good for it to really achieve any real commericial success. That's too bad because this is considerably better than the other schlock on the radio.
I have the SACD version of this recording, and for any of you that have 5.1 surround capability and an SACD player; you're in for a real treat. This album has a really interesting mix and used the surround channels to great effect without being overtly aggressive and overbearing. Most of the time the rear channels are used for sound effects much like if you were watching a movie. Other times a rhythmic patter will move from the front channels to the rear channels so that the front channels can take up a new, complimentary pattern. The vocals stay firmly anchored to the front with just accents of soaring vocal sections echoing to the rear channels for emphasis. Whoever did the multi-channel mixing for this recording definitely did an above average job. The mixing compares quite favorably to that of Peter Gabriel's "Up" album in 5.1 surround.
Given the type of music on this disc, the surround mix only adds to the enjoyment without ever taking away from the presentation. I'd recommend anyone shelling out a few extra bucks for the higher resolution, multi-channel SACD version of this recording. Either way, I think this is a fine recording and a worthy addition to most prog fans collections. Submitted by dltF90 (Barbertucky, Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Genius This album is amazing. Words can't do this album justice. It has to be heard to be appreciated. One of those cds that you can listen to all the way through without skipping a track. Submitted by Veritas (Aequitas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
headphone earcandy!! Hit the lights, mix a drink and put your headphones on for an experience you want every night. I have yet to find a stereo that will do this album justice. My best results have been from a pair of BOSE headphones. Try it and you will see. Submitted by i10519195 (Waterloo, IN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$22.05 DUSK is a 10-track release by metal group Badlands, featuring the tracks "Healer," "Sun Red Moon," and "Fire Lasts Forever."
Dusk is Badlands's third and final album. It was originally recorded in 1992-1993 as a demo to submit to their label. In an interview on the Racer X site, Jeff Martin talks about Dusk: Dusk, or the tunes put on the album, were intended as demos for the next Badlands album after Voo Doo Hwy. We had worked up that group of tunes at rehearsals at Mates in North Hollywood two months before recording them at Good Night L.A by a friend of Ray's, Shea Baby. It's all 24 track full studio recording, but we did it all in less than 6 to 8 hours. We put the Mic's up, made sure they worked and Go! We recorded them primarily for Atlantic Records to hear and give us a budget for the full recording of the same tunes, if they liked what we had. They did not like the direction of the songs, for whatever the reason. Some months later we were dropped from Atlantic. At the time we were happy with that outcome and so was the Management, being that Atlantic was not doing anything for us anyway. We shopped new prospects. Almost every song was one-take recordings. I remember having floor Tom mic problems where ...
