Originally Release '95 , First set of his 70s solo concert at New York City's Hunter College , brooding lesson in the "Three D's" of the blues--despair, death, and desire.
Solo performer: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar). Recorded at Hunter College, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Robert Palmer. Because he's so loose and improvisatory -- and because he loves to twist the 12-bar format into so many different shapes and sizes -- John Lee Hooker can present a major challenge to sidemen. More than a few times, Hooker has done without sidemen altogether and gone it alone with thrilling results. That's exactly what happens on Alone, an outstanding two-CD set containing live performances at New York's Hunter College from 1976. Not having to concern himself with the needs of a drummer or a bassist, the singer/guitarist is especially introspective and doesn't hesitate to let loose and improvise on such familiar tunes as "Boogie Chillen," "Boom Boom" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer." Hooker enjoys improvisation as much as a jazz musician, and on these magnificent recordings, he is at his most uninhibited and takes one liberty after another. ~ Alex Henderson ALONE is made up of songs taken from a pair of live sets recorded at New York City's Hunter College spread over two discs. As the title makes evident, this is John Lee Hooker stripped down to basics; just a voice and an acoustic guitar. Despite the apparent simplicity of this set-up, Hooker's musical approach went beyond the stereotypical image of a blues musician keeping time with his foot and stringing together colloquial non sequitirs. Instead, improvisation is the name of the game, which means that Hooker doesn't necessarily keep specific time. Instead, these rambling narratives are occasionally punctuated either by a stray chord or a few squeezed-off notes. This technique works especially well on some of the deeper shadows within which the Hook walks. "Jesse James" gave the outlaw his due whereas "I'll Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive" reeks of the foreboding that Robert Johnson must have felt at the crossroads. Hooker does get to boogie, and lays down a nice groove on numbers such as "Boom Boom," "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" and "All Night Long."Down Beat (9/90) - 5 Stars - Excellent "...Hooker at his most menacing, unconstrained by bar lines and accompanists, free to relentlessly follow the mood of the tune wherever it suits him." $16.45 The Celthix is a group of musicians that draws its energy from the roots of American Folk music. From its origin in the British Isles and the mountains of Appalachia to the contemporary Folk music of the 20th century, The Celthix' music pays tribute to those who have gone before them. The songs that the group plays span hundreds of years and tell the story of the people who live in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia and their ancestors from Scotland and Ireland. From its beginning, the band has gotten a very warm reception playing to audiences accustomed to bluegrass music. As Celtic music is one of the direct "ancestors" of bluegrass, folks who have never heard it seem to understand The Celthix' blend of Scots/Irish and Mountain music almost "instinctively.ā The band's goal is to help others experience the stories these songs tell and have fun in the process! In their first year together, The Celthix experienced a "dream come true" when they played two shows with legends of Scottish Folk music, The Tannahill Weavers. Along with The Chieftains and The Battlefield Band, The Tannahill Weavers are largely responsible for introducing Celtic music to an International audience and for its ever-increasing popularity worldwide. To be able to share the stage with musicians of this caliber and importance was an honor The Celthix will never forget. Recently, the band was able to share the stage with legendary German Guitarist Klaus Weiland for two shows which culminated in a jam with Klaus and the guys playing together on each others' originals. The shows got rave reviews and a tour is planned for Fall 2009 in the Mid Atlantic region. The CeltHix are: SCOTT EUTSLER (Whistles, Digital Horn, Percussion, Vocals) Scott has the most eclectic background of the group, with influences ranging from traditional Celtic to Turkish folk and Native American music. Scott can be heard on various recordings from the Celtic band, Father, Son and Friends. Scott and his wife Kay have been world-travelers and own a business called Touch the Earth, which sells musical instruments and handicrafts from around the globe. Scott's musical influences are many, and include The Tannahill Weavers, Stan Rogers, Fairport Convention, John Prine, and Andy M. Stewart. Scott is also a traveling musician with the theater group, Once upon a Blue Ridge. Scott and his family reside ...
