Unknown Contributor Roles: Lars Frederiksen ; Craig Leg; Gordy "The Known Bastard". If Lars Frederiksen's first solo project was a welcome addition to the Rancid family, his second record is like a dog crawling back home after rolling in something very rancid. Viking is a generic record made up of by-the-numbers punk tracks unaided by minor things like melodies, thoughtful lyrics, or surprises. The sound is ultraprocessed and hook-free, the musicians competent at best. The songs are pretty silly and childish, whether about murder ("Mainlining Murder"), guns and violence ("1%" and "Switchblade"), sex with hookers ("My Life to Live," a duet with Lars' better half, Tim Armstrong), or how tough and wonderful Lars is ("Streetwise Professor"). In fact, of the songs are about Lars and his self-mythology, most laughably on the last track on the record, "The Viking." Lars speak-sings his life story over weeping strings and churchified organ, reaching the high point when he calls out, "Sorry ladies, I'm married to the sea." The record is just so damn boring and sleazy (check out the lovely sub-Suicide Girls photos in the CD booklet -- or better yet, don't) and self-important. It feels like the kind of record bands like Zeppelin and Grand Funk were making in the '70s, the kind of bland, irrelevant record punk aimed to wipe out. Having Armstrong, who has one of the best and most distinctive voices around, sing a track also points out one major flaw of the record, that being Frederiksen's generically gruff and tuneless voice. Listening to Rancid albums, you would have no idea that something so lame could come from their ranks. It's sad but true, and Viking is the proof. ~ Tim Sendra VIKING, the second solo release from Rancid singer/guitar-slinger Lars Frederiksen, backed by his band the Bastards, is stuffed to the gills with in-your-face punk attitude. Jackhammer drums, half-chanted/half-shouted vocals, and power chords ripped off like automatic gunfire all do their best to keep the punk flame burning. The lyrical subject matter never waxes too philosophical, as Frederiksen's themes are primarily limited to weapons ("Switchblade"), fighting ("Fight"), murder ("Mainlining Murder"), and, now and then, the fairer sex ("Little Rude Girl"). Every once in a while, the Bastards kick it up old-school style, as on the Ramones-esque "For You," and the 1950s-themed rockabilly number "Marie Marie." Frederiksen's Rancid cohort Tim Armstrong (who also produced the album), takes a turn on vocals on "My Life to Live," a tribute to easy women that bears more than a passing resemblance to a Pogues number. But Frederiksen's homages are offered in the loving name of gung-ho rock & roll, and VIKING delivers that spirit in kind. Lars Frederiksen Viking Songs Viking Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) not as good as the self titled Not as good as the self titled 2001 release. Viking dosent have the punch I was expecting from Lars. Submitted by lanejane (Cedar Rapids, IA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
love that" bastard"!! Great C.D. from Lars- but I whish "skinhead rob" would find some other record to screw up. Good hardcore, a little psychobilly, & a great cover {Marie, Marie} by Dave Alvin. But the rapcrap rob {contributes?}{thank god it's only one song}- I could live without. Submitted by motorjames1 (tucson, az.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Never Gets Old You can take Lars for what he's worth, true punk rock. The Rancid money never trickled down to his roots and for that we should all be thankful. Every song on this album is classic and never gets old. Some hardcore, psychobilly, and a couple of great covers - Dave Alvins "Marie Marie", and the classic "For You" originally by the Anti-Nowhere League. I'll never tire of this album, I hold it true to my own roots in the 80's punk scene. Submitted by 66 Butch (Owensboro, Kentucky) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Viking
$43.09 Japanese edition of the Swedish metal act's 2003 album includes one bonus track, 'Ritual'. 12 tracks.
This Japanese release of the LP includes a bonus song, "Ritual." "Privation of Faith Inc.," One Kill Wonder's opening instrumental track, overbearingly proves one thing: The Haunted worship at the altar of almighty thrash/speed metal kings Slayer. The clean, arpeggiated main riff swipes the sense of melody and tension from Slayer classic "Dead Skin Mask" and eventually merges into "Godpuppet," a two-minute blast furnace of speed riffing and manic drumming that would provide a nice set of curtains to match Reign in Blood's gore-stained furniture. Which isn't to say the Haunted's third chunk of wax is a blatant ripoff; cherry-picking the best aspects of one's influences and integrating them into such an entertaining, vicious, and well-written album such as One Kill Wonder isn't a crime, and it should be welcomed with open arms by any self-respecting fan of the genre. As expected, several songs, including "Downward Spiral" and the title track, possess the frantic, technical guitar riffery that adorned the finest work of At the Gates (whose former guitarist, Anders Bjorler, gets the majority of songwriting credit here); elsewhere, "Bloodletting" boasts the tense, midtempo groove of mid- to late-period Slayer and the conclusion to "D.O.A." nods to "Raining Blood" with a clashing cavalcade of cat-strangler guitar solos. The album also further separates the Haunted from their Swedish brethren, being too straightforward to be lumped in with the more progressive New Wave of Swedish Death Metal acts (i.e., In Flames, Hypocrisy, Dark Tranquillity, etc.). However, one question begs to be answered about One Kill Wonder: Is there a bad riff or a single wasted moment on the album? Not in the least -- it's lean, mean, and nasty. But there's also a ring of familiarity to it -- overall, it's not a drastic departure from its two brutally concise predecessors, The Haunted and The Haunted ...

Viking
$21.45 The Saskatoon Star-Phoenix - September 12, 2002 by Cam Fuller:" Suzie Vinnick visited her old hometown of Saskatoon recently, long enough to drop off her new album 33 Stars. And it’s great. Vinnick’s sometimes playful, occasionally laid-back, always confident vocals complement the music perfectly. Surprises lurk around every corner, like the sensational opening track Something So Sweet. It has you scrambling to confirm your suspicions that it’s a modernized version of an undiscovered gem from the great American songbook. But rather than Cole Porter’s name in the credits, you find it’s a Vinnick-Deborah Alexander original. A cover of Led Zeppelin’s Rock and Roll seems unlikely on paper, but it’s done up beautifully with acoustic guitar and jazzy vocals that evoke a lazy summer day. Regardless of the writer, whether it’s Tom Waits (Picture in a Frame) or a heartfelt original (Hanging out in Heaven), the sound holds together. Shades of Lisa Loeb in the title track and Amy Sky in the writing on the Les Smith/Kristi Magraw composition The Hands that Rock the Cradle. Wow.
