Released in 2004, With Triumph Comes Loss was Swiss metalcore outfit Cataract's third album on as many labels (this one arriving on Metal Blade), and, although their songs sometimes lack complete distinction, there's no denying the commanding force with which they are routinely delivered. Vinyl snaps, crackles, and pops precede vicious opener "Killing Tool," which, as one would expect, launches the album off with a frenetic gallop, its double kick-drums and ample harmonies at times bordering on the melodic death metal of In Flames. Slower tracks like "Banished in the Dark" and "Fuel," on the other hand, are built on the sort of monster grooves that Pantera ingrained into almost all heavy metal, post-1992. Slayer is another obvious touchstone throughout (the impressive, slow-marching title track recalls "South of Heaven," and the opening riff to "As We Speak" sounds almost exactly like "Raining Blood," only inside out), but the scarcity of guitar solos serves as a constant reminder of Cataract's ties to the hardcore movement, and, to a smaller degree, the neo-thrash work of, say, the Haunted. The production is also perfect for this sort of music -- crunchy, taut, in your face -- so it's really a matter of coming up with a little more songwriting variety that will make Cataract's next album the one to count. There's definite promise of that, to be sure. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

5 stars Excellent Death Metal from Switzerland
Cataract has evolved from brutal hardcore to death metal with excellent results. Pay attention to the following songs: Killing Tool, Nothing Left, Fuel and With Triumph Comes Loss. Cataract has announced its upcoming album "Kingdom" for May 2006... If you are a thrash or metalcore fanatic, Cataract could be dissapointing.

2 stars Has Potential- Doesn't Deliver
If you are a fan of the thrash/metal core genre that's starting to spring up, this band may be for you (but probably not!). I originally heard this band on the metal channel on cable and thought that they sounded pretty cool. Liking what I heard out of of few songs, I bought this album, and was dissapointed. Cataract has the right idea for their style, but they just don't execute. They have a thrashy style with hardcore vocals with some NYHC breakdowns, but: 1) Every song sounds the same 2) They don't play their instruments precisely enough and sound rather sloppy. Check these guys out in a couple of years

Although Twisted Sister had been slugging it out on the New York-area bar/club scene for nearly a decade by the early '80s (developing a large following in the process), no major record label would sign the act. Noticing that England was in the midst of a heavy metal resurgence (dubbed the New Wave of British Heavy Metal), the quintet moved over to the U.K., where they recorded their debut album, Under the Blade, issued in 1982 on the independent Secret Records. UFO bassist Pete Way produced the album, which featured many of the band's best compositions from their club days. The chilling title track remains one of the band's best and has became a perennial concert favorite, while ...

The essential signatures of post-Pantera metal are in abundance on Lamb of God's inaugural album (though they had issued a disc under the name Burn the Priest). A veritable cornucopia of double picking and double-kick drumming, New American Gospel provides a mighty oak upon which gritty American metal's faith is maintained, effectively bridging the '90s' insistence upon drill-sergeant technicality and the old school's determined focus on riff construction. Both kick and snare beats are as insistent as pneumatic drilling, and beyond that, they are diamond-precise, riveted flawlessly into place by Steve Austin's Today Is the Day ...
