3 Piece Power Pop Group From U.K.TV Show"America Or Busted"
Busted/Cheap Trick: Matt, James Harding, Charlie (vocals). Personnel: Charlie Simpson (guitar, piano, drums); James Bourne (guitar, piano); Steve Power (keyboards, programming, drum programming); Andy Duncan (percussion, programming); Syze Up, Sidh Solanki (programming). Additional personnel: Steve Power. Audio Mixers: Steve Power; Steve Robson; Tom Elmhirst; Jeremy Wheatley; Bob Clearmountain. Recording information: Decoy Studios, Studio City, CA. Photographer: Ellis Parrinder. Busted's US debut grabs the strongest tracks from the youthful British trio's two albums, their 2002 debut (also called Busted) and its rapid-fire follow-up Present for Everyone, both of which were smash hits in their home country. Sort of a rock reinvention of the boy band concept, Busted's James Bourne, Mattie Jay, and Charlie Simpson match slick melodies to blaring guitars and lyrics about being young, hooking up, and having crushes on stewardesses and schoolteachers. In addition to the singles "What I Go to School For", "Air Hostess", "Year 3000", and "Crashed the Wedding", Busted includes the boys' symphonic pop version of the Thunderbirds theme (written for the 2004 live-action film adaptation) and a run through the Undertones classic "Teenage Kicks". The latter track's a little too processed, but some raucous lead guitar and strong verses from each Busted principal help make it a fun romp. ~ Johnny Loftus Busted's eponymous debut made a pretty big splash in the trio's native U.K., where its next-generation sound found immediate favor with kids stuck in a growth spurt between Boyzone and blink-182 allegiances. Principals Mattie Jay, James Bourne, and Charlie Simpson slide smoothly between material like "Psycho Girl" and "Losing You" -- dull teen pop ballads with the sickeningly overwrought vocals typical of the genre -- and relatively more creative stuff that punches up the formula with pop-ternative production and smirking, yet still squeaky clean lyrical witticisms. At best (lead single "What I Go to School For"; the mindless future frolic of "Year 3000") it's BBMak with better cheekbones; at worst, Busted is a neutered Sum 41. Sure, "Crash and Burn" is stippled with muted electric guitar riffs and an amplified, almost-the-real-thing drum machine. But its spurned suitor sob story ("I asked you to dance at the disco/BUT YOU SAID NO!") is right out of the pop star handbook. At least those guys in Sum 41 rhymed "El Niño" with "drinking in the back of an El Camino". This is the biggest problem with Busted. While they sing about undressing foxy schoolteachers, and insult rivals for trying to look like James Van Der Beek, the outrageousness seems disingenuous given how much of their debut sounds like Westlife warmed over. [The album was re-released in 2004 featuring several different tracks.] ~ Johnny Loftus Man, by this point, Cheap Trick couldn't even sell out correctly! 1988's Lap of Luxury had spawned a couple of hit singles, and a modicum of craft and shameless pandering could have kept the gravy train rolling at least a little while longer. Instead, the group hit the concert trail for an extended period of time and then ran back into the studio before they had written any halfway decent material, and unfortunately, Busted sounds like what it is: a rushed, half-baked follow-up to a surprise hit that does the band no favors. Even the obligatory Diane Warren-penned power ballad, "Wherever Would I Be," is completely horrid, and that's by the low standards of Diane Warren-penned power ballads! (To his credit, Robin Zander sounds like he's cringing throughout the entire song.) The band does manage to rouse themselves a little at the very end, for a credible run-through of their hero Roy Wood's "Rock and Roll Tonight," but it's too little too late. Busted has some competition for the title, but it's a strong contender for the coveted title of Cheap Trick's career nadi Busted Songs | 1. | Air Hostess (MP3) | $0.99 | |

$17.65 Deluxe Edition
Audio Mixer: Stefan Glaumann. Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away the sins of their previous album, 2005's ROSENROT. The group's ...

| | New Year Newness Ends CD (2001)
Busted album
$12.59 Matt & Bubba Kadane (Bedhead), Chris Brokaw (Codeine)
The New Year: Matt Kadane, Bubba Kadane (vocals, guitar); Peter Schmidt (guitar); Mike Donofrio (bass); Chris Brokaw (drums). Recorded on July 12 & 16, 2000. Personnel: Bubba Kadane, Matt Kadane (vocals, guitar); Chris Brokaw (drums). Recording information: Electrical Audio, Chicago, Ill (2000). When the Kadane brothers -- Matt and Bubba -- disbanded Bedhead, it was at the height of that band's creativity and excellence. Wherever they went, well-deserved critical acclaim seemed to follow, and for good reason: Their music was intricate, touching, and emotional to a degree few bands ever reach. Bedhead's final album, Transaction de Novo was particularly affecting. The New Year is led (and all its songs are written) by the Kadane brothers, who were apparently less taking a break from each other than from the project they had created. The New Year's debut album, Newness Ends, comes after the band had played only a handful of shows, and while it has obvious similarities to Bedhead, the reason for the name change is also apparent. The most blatant difference is the tempos on Newness Ends. Whereas Bedhead records rarely made it past a crawl, these new songs take a similar songwriting approach and hit the gas a bit. The first track, "Half a Day," announces the difference with a bouncing ...
| | Bettye Lavette Woman Like Me CD (2003)
Busted CD music
$12.89 This album has been a long time coming. Bettye LaVette is one of the all-time R&B greats; yet, aside from European releases, this new CD marks only the second time her talents have been showcased in a full-length album. Here she's joined by three-time Gr
Personnel includes: Bettye Lavette (vocals); Mike Turner (acoustic guitar); Bobby Murray, Alan Mirikitani (guitar); Rudy Robinson (keyboards). Recorded Doghouse Studios, Burbank, California. Includes liner notes by David Freeland. Personnel: Mike Turner (guitar, acoustic guitar); Alan Mirikitani (guitar); Tom Peterson (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Bruce Paulson (trombone); Rudy Robinson (keyboards); Lee Spath (drums); Cynthia Bass (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Dennis Walker; Alan Mirikitani; Bettye LaVette. Recording information: Doghouse Studios, Burbank CA. Photographer: John DeLeon. "I can feel the pain, Lord, it's raining in my heart," Bettye LaVette howls on "The Forecast," and it sounds like it. On this stunning comeback -- her first American release in over 20 years -- the feisty soul singer rips through an hour of music with the pent-up hunger of a caged tiger at feeding time. Helped immeasurably by producer/songwriter Dennis Walker, best known for his breakout work with Robert Cray, LaVette moans, screams, shouts, pleads, and growls her way through a dozen tracks that'll leave even the most jaded R&B fan begging for more. One of the casualties of music biz politics, LaVette has a style that has only sharpened with age. In her mid-fifties at the time of this recording, the singer has a husky voice that tears at the edges, adding deeper emotion. Although the production leans toward the slick side, it leaves room for the singer to dominate each track. Walker, who wrote or co-wrote nine of these tunes, provides heart-tugging yet defiant material perfect for LaVette's take-no-prisoners approach. The singer plays the part of the scorned, aggressive woman, left behind but strong enough to know she's better off without that no-good scoundrel. Song tiles such as "Salt in My Wounds," "Serves Him Right," and "It Ain't Worth It After a While" tell the story without having to hear a lyric. LaVette squeezes every ounce of emotion from ...

| | Wizardzz Hidden City Of Taurmond CD (2006)
Busted music CDs
$11.09 Personnel: Rich Porter (keyboards); Brian Gibson (drums). Recording information: Machines, Providence (2005); Our Homes (2005). Lightning Bolt continue on happily, but bassist Brian Gibson's side project, Wizardzz, gives him a chance to show a different -- slightly -- take on things, with him switching to drums. Admittedly it would be wondrous to hear a total solo album of him presumably destroying a drum kit with precision, but this is a duo, and Wizardzz's combination of Gibson and Rich Porter's keyboards is as strikingly fun and overwhelming at its best as is Gibson's more well-known group. "Sailship" feels like it should be either a video game fanfare or the music over the opening credits to some lost '80s cop drama -- very much compliments either way -- with the fat tone of Porter's work suggesting the bloated bizarreness of the late '70s beaten into sleek shape, with the later "Chasing Our Shadows" being an equally strong complement. Porter elsewhere embraces playing that's simultaneously classic rock and devolved techno -- check out the central riff to "Glimpse of the Hidden City" for a perfect example -- and at other points goes for full-on spaced-out Laserium rock that's downright genius in its over the top but never not enjoyable combinations. "Jelipper-Lilly Field" goes for everything from Giorgio Moroder motorik-disco sparkles to random who-knows-what, while the twinkly "Diamond Mirror" should have soundtracked any random '70s episode of Nova that talked about computers. Meanwhile, Gibson's playing throughout is very much him -- there's a just-on-the-verge maniac edge that surfaces clearly at moments, such as in the conclusion to "Whispers from Wallface" or throughout "Ladydragons." ...

$16.45 *Sarahgreen played bass for an all girl indie quartet called Relish. Relish was sponsored by Volcom Ent. and put Relish on the Warped Tour where they played with bands like CKY, Pennywise, Rancid, The Donnas, NOFX, and 311. Relish also played SXSW that year.*Sarahgreen then moved to a small village in Northern Ca. known as Curry Village, Yosemite. She brought a guitar, the albums mentioned under her musical influences, and a car full of clothes. For 2 months Sarahgreen wrote and played guitar under the stars. *In 2005 Sarahgreen relocated to Long Beach, Ca. She continued to write songs and play other instruments with other local musicians. She recorded Songs for Sadness, an indie released sketch of the songs she had composed earlier that year. Stacks of them were sold to fans attending local shows, introducing Sarahgreen to her fan base. Other demos were recorded and released as well.*Following Songs For Sadness, Sarahgreen continued to play any show anywhere. She was asked to play The Coach House in South O.C., which became a sold out event. It was there she met Robin DiMaggio, who played drums for legends such as David Bowie, Tracy Chapman, and Paul Simon. They talked about drums and how they both shared a love for Edie Brickell and Matt Chamberlain. She also was introduced to Bill Pfordresher, recording industry executive and founder of Songcast. *Sarahgreen was approached by Bill and Robin to make a record in 2006. She called it Emergency. Emergency was recorded in Studio B at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, Ca. Her debut album features the talents of Michael Bearden on piano (Yoko Ono, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder) and the mysterious vocals of Indian violinist L. Shankar on the covertly religious track Bullets & Bibles. *For the promotion of Emergency, 2007 was the year Sarahgreen toured the Western U.S. and played all venues she could book including sidewalks in Portland, OR. Emergency was an independent release by the artist herself.*Sarahgreen will be releasing an EP titled 7 soon. She is working with handpicked talent to make 7 your favorite release yet. A new website will be launched as 7 is released at www.sarahgreenmusic.com. For updated info. and to listen to new recordings, be Sarahgreen’s friend. Listeners say: "Observational, experiential, and fearless, Sarahgreen is a homegrown talent with a myriad of influences (jazz, singer-songwriters like Elliot Smith, Ani DiFranco, and Heather Nova, trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack to name a few). $9.29 While tradition-oriented gospel choirs do abound, gospel (along with its Contemporary Christian offshoots) actually has a great stylistic range. WOW GOSPEL ESSENTIALS is a rewarding primer of contemporary gospel performance. While there are established names (CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams) present, there are a few younger proponents who bring a decidedly modern twist to the contemporary genre. Smokie Norful's soulful vocals are buoyed by hip-hop beats, and the sleek vocal group approach of the Tri-City Singers recalls the R&B tradition of harmony groups.
