| | Michael Buble Crazy Love CD (2009)
Two Thousands
$14.49 Photographer: Ben Watts. Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and yearning touch. And just as "Home" worked to showcase Bublé's own writing abilities, here we get the sunshine pop of "Haven't Met You Yet" -- a skippy, jaunty little song that brings to mind a mix of the Carpenters and Chicago. Throw in a rollicking and soulful duet with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings on "Baby (You've Got What ...

Personnel: Joe Newman , Snooky Young (trumpet); James Buffington (French horn); Garnett Brown (trombone); Don Butterfield (tuba); John Lewis, John Richard Lewis (piano, harpsichord); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Connie Kay (drums, percussion). Audio Remixer: Ed Barton . Liner Note Author: Martin Williams . Recording information: Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, NY. Christmas came early in 1971; in May, Atlantic released Plastic Dreams, the penultimate studio album from the Modern Jazz Quartet during their main, 22-year run as an ensemble. Of the MJQ's albums, Plastic Dreams has never been a critic's favorite, and was an album that mystified many of the group's longtime followers. First was the gatefold front cover, impossible to represent well in AMG's scan, which featured a "plastic" image of a nude woman that was really pushing the envelope by 1971 standards; it was almost "indecent." Secondly were the liner notes by arch-New York jazz critic Martin Williams; while they were certainly appreciative, they really made you wonder if Williams was listening to the same album you were. Third was the inclusion of two Christmas selections on an album that didn't otherwise have anything to do with Christmas -- indeed, what was going on here? The answer, quite simply, was that Plastic Dreams was as close as the MJQ ever got to making a pop album, and the production work of Arif Mardin reflects that idea -- it utilizes a "hot" pop production rather than the dry-as-a-bone styled mix that typifies the MJQ's recordings up to that time. The opener, "Walkin' Stomp," reasserts this concept in a big way; it is as far into playing pure funk that the MJQ ever got, with Percy ...

Anyone's Daughter: André Carswell (vocals). When a German band names itself after a Deep Purple song, all bets are off as far as the musical outcome is concerned. (Are they going to play industrial prog? Darkwave metal? EBM electro-pop?) Actually, Anyone's Daughter made its name on the European scene in the late '70s and '80s with a series of intelligent ...

$6.69 The 2001 EP release from Green Inside.Influenced by sounds you'd hear on early to mid-nineties modern rock radio, Red was the second EP from Green Inside and the first with a printing budget! The lineup for the Blue EP included Seth Thulin (acoustic guitars & lead vocals), Steve Tobey (drums, percussion & vocals), Lorin Pellegrino (bass) and Rich Mirakian (electric guitars). It was the first time the band worked under a more intense, professional studio setting, as well as working with outside musicians (guest background vocals, Hammond B3 and Wurlitzer).Musically the band was working harder to hone in on songwriting skills, versus building ...
