Helmet: Frank Bello (bass guitar); John Tempesta, Page Hamilton, Chris Traynor. Personnel: Page Hamilton (vocals, guitar); Chris Traynor (guitar, bass guitar); John Tempesta (drums). Audio Mixer: Jay Baumgardner. Recording information: Cello Studios; NRG Studios; The Bakery. Photographer: Chapman Baehler. The resurrected Helmet pits a growlier Page Hamilton against a new rhythm section, but that's about the only change. Size Matters stutters just like the old days, and favors skewed melodies that, even if they're a little slower or more layered, still sound like New York City in 1990. "Crashing Foreign Cars," for example, could be part two of Strap It On's "Blacktop." There's Hamilton-branded guitar freakery here -- check the bleating car horn intro to "Enemies" -- and opener "Smart" is as economic as metal derivation is going to get in the new millennium, when the genre's dominated by bombast and ridiculously compressed electric guitars. (Ex-Rob Zombie drummer John Tempesta gets credit for his precision snare and deliberate pacing.) And yet, despite its throwback sound, Size Matters starts to run together. Middle-range tempos emphasize the slow-motion roar of Hamilton's guitar, but tracks like "Drug Lord" and "Unwound" also begin to plod at that meter. It's like they lose interest after introducing the huge part. "Everybody Loves You" is stronger, and "Last Breath"'s crunch and altered tempos are knife sharp and cool. "Speak and Spell" is another highlight. Size Matters emphasizes for the bloated alt-metal elite what it means to have craft and a little self-control. It isn't necessarily memorable, but as an exercise in measured, even artistic rage, it's classic Hamilton. ~ Johnny Loftus In an age of media-hyped band reunions, many music fans are understandably wary of comeback albums. Longtime devotees of reunited groups complain about lineup changes and yearn for the old sound, while newer and younger fans reach for the "classics" to see what they missed. Bands mounting comebacks need to work twice as hard to prove themselves. Luckily, Helmet has never been afraid of a little hard work. After a seven-year hiatus, one of alternative metal's most influential acts returns with a new war cry in 2004's SIZE MATTERS. For this record, frontman Page Hamilton (vocals/guitar) reunites with Chris Traynor (guitar) and enlists bassist Frank Bello (Anthrax) and drummer John Tempesta (Rob Zombie, Testament) to round out the personnel. Despite the changes, SIZE MATTERS delivers the same kind of solid, minimalist riffs and tense, rhythmic propulsion that defined Helmet's major-label debut, MEANTIME. Progressive-jazz chord changes still keep the listener guessing, and Hamilton's evolution hints at a less industrial sound, with vocals and atmospheric guitars placed at the forefront of the mix. Helmet's distinctive style remains as significant as it was almost 15 years prior, and SIZE MATTERS is an album to be appreciated by Helmet lifers and rookies alike.Magnet (p.109) - "The turn-your-bones-to-dust guitar ferocity and chest-rattling drums are now bolstered by a definite melodic sensibility..." Helmet Size Matters Songs Size Matters Music Review Average Rating: (2.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Good Comeback CD After a long break, helmet returns (sort of). Good CD overall, but could have been be a bit heavier. Hopefully they'll be back for a while and will add a bit more of that old sound many of us enjoy. This "Size" matters!!--Helmet returns!!!! If you have been a longtime fan of Helmet like myself you might be wondering how the seven year layoff may have affected this bands sound. Worry not--"Size Matters" is in fine form in song quality and aggression. The patented wall of guitars are still present and this album totally rocks hard.I have all of Helmets work and this to me is the bands strongest and most cohesive album yet.No weak tracks whatsoever!!!I was very suprised listening to the disc at Page Hamiltons vocal style this time around as he actually sings vocal melodies and harmonies. If you are familiar with Helmets previous work this may seem strange or scary but fear not....when I say melodic and harmonies I'm not talking Poison or Creed,etc...it works.Of note,I've let three different friends borrow this to check it out and they all loved it...Finally, if you already like Helmet I don't think you'll be disappointed and if you haven't checked this awsome band out you'll be glad you did! Giggity Goo Album rocks. Simple enough. Crashing Foreign Cars is ridiculous. The guy who said this is nu-metal is on drugs or something....this sounds nothing like that. Last I checked, there's no rapping here fool. Can't wait for Monochrome to come out. Submitted by puddingtime4543 (Lexington, KY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Standing Ovation for Page This album proves that Page Hamilton does not get stuck in a rut. The songs still have Helmet's driving sound but they also have some new flavors. Filled with awesome guitar solos, great harmonies, and exuding with musical talent, "Size Matters" is an overall praise-worthy album. The songs sound excellent live, too! Recorded at Little Bear Studios, Suffern, New York and Metal Works Studios, Toronto, Canada between February & August 1999. Dream Theater is almost aggressively out of fashion in 1999. Few bands subscribe to their dense blend of progressive rock and post-Halen metal, and those that do usually don't have major-label contracts, the way Dream Theater does. There was a point ...

$17.19 Dream Theater: James LaBrie (vocals); John Petrucci (guitar, background vocals); Jordan Rudess (keyboards); John Myung (bass); Mike Portnoy (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Howard Portnoy (percussion). Recorded at Bear Tracks Studios and Little Bear Studios, Suffern, New York between March & August 2001. The godfathers of progressive metal have been amazing and delighting their dedicated fans since the late '80s. Throughout their impressive and unlikely career they have continued to push themselves and the genre into new and challenging directions. While arguably hitting their peak with 1994's Awake, the band continued to grow with each new release (save for perhaps Falling into Infinity). Their previous studio effort, Metropolis ...

$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken ...
