Being Rob Zombie's guitarist for many years was good for Mike Riggs because it allowed him to take the signature guitar playing and songwriting he had spent years developing with Zombie back to his original project before the 'zombie days', Scum of the Earth. When he began to collaborate with Powerman 5000 guitarist Mike Tempesta, the combination was slick and volatile. As Tempesta contributed his writing abilities to help create songs with amazing hooks and character, the band was able to maintain a seriously heavy sound rooted in Riggs'soriginal vision. While recording, longtime friends of the band (from Symptom of a Down and The Cult) sat in as guest musicians on several songs to add the finishing touches and give the band a definite sense of where they have been and where they are going.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Scum of the Earth: Riggs (vocals, guitar); Mike Tempesta (guitar); Clay (bass guitar); Seven (drums). When former Rob Zombie guitarist Riggs starts a project of his own, one expects a strong White Zombie influence. Riggs, after all, spent six years in Rob Zombie's employ, and the influence was bound to rub off -- which is exactly what happens on Blah...Blah...Blah...Love Songs for the New Millennium. This is the first album by Scum of the Earth, an outfit that includes not only Riggs (lead vocals, guitar), but also, Powerman 5000 guitarist Mike Tempesta (the brother of Zombie drummer John Tempesta). Not surprisingly, the Rob Zombie influence is quite strong on this CD, which favors the sort of rhythmic, industrialized electro-metal that Riggs' former employer is known for. But if Blah...Blah...Blah is less than groundbreaking, it is never dull or uninspired -- quite the contrary. Rob Zombie taught Riggs well, and none of Scum of the Earth's material fails to be hooky and infectious. Unlike so many of the post-`80s alternative metallers whose lyrics are totally introspective, Zombie has brought a sense of campy, over-the-top fun to the table -- and the dark-humored mixture of horror, sex, sleaze and decadence that one expects from Zombie (or, for that matter, the Electric Hellfire Club) is also a main ingredient of Blah...Blah...Blah. Notice that certain words keep coming up when Zombie and Riggs are discussed -- words like humorous, fun and entertaining. Riggs, like Zombie, realizes that in a post-`80s, post-Nevermind rock world, humor and campy fun are not illegal; there is no law stating that post-`80s rock has to be ultra-serious-minded 100 percent of the time. Blah...Blah...Blah doesn't point alternative metal in any new directions, but in terms of infectiousness and sheer entertainment value, Scum of the Earth's first album is a success. ~ Alex Henderson Scum Of The Earth Blah...Blah...Blah Songs Blah...Blah...Blah Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) Scum Of The Earth: Blah...Blah...Blah I just saw these guys perform live and I must say they tore the roof. I hope these guys put out another album because I bet it will be good. Submitted by Paul (Salem, NH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
It's okay I heard "I am the Scum" in one of the satellite music channels...being a White Zombie/Rob Zombie fan, I decided to check this band out. The only tracks I like in this album are "I am the Scum", "Bloodsuckin Freakshow", and, my fav. "Murder Song". The rest of the songs, in my opinion, aren't catchy. Hopefully, they'll bring out some good material for their next album. I actually saw them perform live here in CA. They don't draw big crowds or anything like that...but they sure play pretty cool in person though. Submitted by J. Martinez (Monterey County, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Absolutely the best CD so far this year!!! This CD is everything i ever dreamed of. It's got the Zombie sound, which I am a big fan of, and naturally so because Riggs wrote most of the riffs for Rob Zombie in his 6 years with the band- also it's got strong vibes of Powerman 5000 and System of a down, since John Dolmayan and Mike Tempesta play on the cD as well. The pounfding rythms of Murder Song and I am the Scum kick my butt every time i hear them. The spooky vibe from Little Spider is amazing, and Get Your Dead On is perhaps the most "radio friendly" track on the CD, but it still retains it's integrity and doesn't sacrifice the trademark Riggs sound that we all love so much and know so well.
