This set features the first studio album in over 20 years by the original line-up of Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Andy Taylor, and Roger Taylor. The DVD features 50 minutes of live footage from their sold out Wembley Stadium show as well as behind-the-scenes footage of the band.
Duran Duran: Simon LeBon (vocals); Andy Taylor (guitar); Nick Rhodes (keyboards); John Taylor (bass guitar); Roger Taylor (drums). "It's like the Mamas & the Papas meets Kraftwerk." This line, more baffling than a lyric like "Shake up the picture, the lizard mixture, with your dance on the eventide," is how Simon LeBon described Astronaut to Rolling Stone. If it was meant to lower expectations of the first Duran Duran album to feature the Fab Five (meaning LeBon, Nick Rhodes, and the trio of unrelated Taylors) since Seven and the Ragged Tiger, it worked. Astronaut, rest assured, sounds nothing like that match made in hell. Instead, it resembles what the average lapsed Durannie might expect or even hope for -- a modern-sounding mixture of extroverted dance-pop and rock, with a couple of relatively subdued and introverted moments. No sound seems forced, and you can tell that the members are thrilled to be in the same studio with one another. Despite a disparate lineup of producers, including Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne) and Dallas Austin (Boyz II Men, Janet Jackson, Pink), the songs slide into one another as well as they do on any of the group's early albums. The big, glossy, buoyant songs work best, containing punching choruses and sleekly raucous motifs that manage to trigger faint memories without sounding recycled. The lighthearted mid-tempo funk of "Bedroom Toys," however, is a randy nightmare that's almost as awkward as any of the covers on Thank You. Even with a handful of forgettable songs beyond that, the album is easily the best one credited to the Duran Duran name since 1993's Wedding Album. That's not saying much, but the fact that these five fortysomethings have made something fresh and contemporary -- without acknowledging the '80s revival(s) -- is a feat of some kind. (Note: Short-fused Roxy Music fans are advised to avoid looking inside the accompanying booklet.) ~ Andy Kellman As the premier ambassadors of the image-conscious, party-loving British New Romantic set in the early 1980s, Duran Duran duly conquered the pop world, with millions of teenage girls in their hook-filled thrall. After three albums, however, the original lineup splintered, and the band's profile began to fade. Two decades down the line, all five members of DD's vintage lineup finally reunited for ASTRONAUT. Unlike the group's more "mature" '90s offerings, 2004's ASTRONAUT eschews "adult alternative" trappings in favor of a return to their earlier bold, fun-loving sound, a move that couldn't have been better timed, considering the concurrent '80s-revival craze. Accordingly, Nick Rhodes's synthesizers buzz and zoom with reckless abandon, providing bright color and underlining the dance-rock beat. Guitarist Andy Taylor largely tones down the frantic fretboard exercises of his post-Duran days, opting for a chunkier, riff-oriented approach reminiscent of the glory days, and Simon LeBon comes off as every inch the rock star, his swagger, insouciance, and signature vocal style utterly undiminished by time. ASTRONAUT appeared on the horizon as an alert to '80s-worshipping young bands that the men who wrote the book were back in action.

Arrangers: Steve Vai; William Kanengiser. Steve Vai fans are a dedicated lot, eager to hear the entirety of the guitarist's work (in that sense, he is very similar to his mentor, Frank Zappa, whose fans would buy collections of just his guitar solos). Given his fan base, Vai had the opportunity to release an album like The Elusive Light and Sound, Vol. 1 -- the first installment of an archival series, capturing all the music he's written and recorded for film, television, and theater. A brilliant idea, actually, since an album like this disproves the antiquated notion that Vai's music is all technique and skill, without much regard ...

$11.59 The Hush Sound: Robert Morris (vocals, guitar); Great Salpeter (vocals, piano); Chris Faller (vocals, electric bass); Darren Wilson (vocals, drums). Personnel: Robert Morris (vocals, guitar); Greta Salpeter (vocals, piano); Darren Wilson (vocals, drums); Rusty Anderson (guitar); Zac Rae (organ, chamberlin); Bill Schnee (drums). Audio Mixer: Kevin Augunas. Recording information: Fairfax Recordings, North Hollywood, CA; IV Lab Studio. Photographer: Matt Wignall. The third album from the Chicago indie-rock outfit the Hush Sound refines the smart, melodic pop found on their first two releases. Distinguished by the piano playing and singing of Greta Salpeter, the Hush Sound draw influences from classic 1960s pop, the music hall tradition, `80s power pop, and contemporaries like Belle and Sebastian. GOODBYE BLUES also offers a poignancy in many of its best tunes ("Honey" and "Hurricane" are two examples), so in addition to being accessible and dreamy, the album is also moving at times. All this is packed into tunes that burst with impressive songcraft and memorable melodies. The Hush Sound's emphasis on mature, piano-driven pop makes them a rarity on the Fueled by Ramen roster, where the punk-pop sounds of Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco reign supreme. With songs like "Medicine Man" and "Honey," Goodbye Blues distances the band even further from their Ramen brethren, adding shades of old-timey swing music and torch song balladry to their catalog. Returning fans will still take comfort in the Hush Sound's usual mix of co-ed vocals and jaunty songcraft, but the group also shows a willingness to experiment that few of their labelmates possess. With pianist/vocalist Greta Salpeter at the wheel, Goodbye Blues opens with the aptly-named "Intro," an early morning ballad that sounds destined for playback on a Victrola, before launching into the snappy "Honey." The bouncing piano chords and semi-jazzy harmonies evoke a sense of 1930s Americana, and while that feeling has mostly waned by the album's second half, it gives the album enough momentum to sustain the weaker moments on Side B. Most of those limitations show up in the songs helmed by guitarist Robert Morris, ...

Each stone hums its truth, the flames sing their story, each verdant branch echoes with the glory of the Creator of all things. The music of this CD flowers from this essential fountain of life.Sometimes arising in ancient native languages, not known to the singer, this music connects us to the earth community. The rhythms of our common ancestry can be discerned in these songs. These icaros, or magical melodies of the Amazon, are not humanly composed. They emerge whole from the Source; are not new or old, but eternally present in the ethers ...
