Before the arrival of Carlos Santana's eponymous band, the San Francisco rock scene drew the inspiration for its jam-oriented music mainly from blues, rock, and Eastern modalities. Santana added Latin music to the mix, forever changing the course of rock & roll history. On Santana's groundbreaking debut album, the group mixes Latin percussion with driving rock grooves. Santana's unique guitar style, alternately biting and liquid, vies with the multiple percussionists for the sonic focus.

Unlike later efforts, Santana's first album features an abundance of loose collective compositions based on a couple of simple riffs ("Jingo," "Soul Sacrifice"). This approach allows for Santana and his bandmates to flex their improvisational muscles to fine effect. The high energy level on SANTANA is infectious--the laid-back feel of other '60s S.F. groups was clearly not for Carlos and company.

The Sony Legacy Edition of Santana's 1969 self-titled debut album is exactly the kind of deluxe treatment that the repackaging and remastering of a classic album deserves. Fine liner notes by Hal Miller guide the listener through the historical journey of this record. First, there is a stunningly remastered version of the original album, front and center with alternate takes of "Savor" and "Soul Sacrifice" added, as well as a studio jam. Musically, Santana is the spot on the map marking the point where everything came together, mutated, and changed. Here Afro-Cuban son, blues, rock, jazz, and funk collided head on, and decided to become something else. Gregg Rolie's swirling, atmospheric organ provided the sonic root equation. Santana's guitar provided the frenzied flight, and Michael Shrieve's Elvin Jones/Roy Haynes-inspired driving kit work provided a dynamic commensurate with the visceral nature of rock. This was not aided, but made possible and furthered by the percussion work of Joe Areas and Michael Caravello, and anchored to earth only by David Brown's rock-solid, dirty-assed bassing. Sure, "Evil Ways" was a monster single, but it doesn't begin to tell the story of the album. Interestingly, with the all the bonus material added, the album doesn't even tell the story of the album. What does offer the key is disc two, which includes the band's original studio sessions for the album -- before the addition of Shrieve and Areas to the band. These tracks, almost all of which appeared in different form on the final version, revealed a talented, original, but loosely focused and slightly timid jamming ensemble that put together some compelling riffs and ideas, but hadn't jelled in a studio setting. Add to this Santana's complete Woodstock

Includes liner notes by Ben Fong-Torres.

5 stars definitive break through
I always found recordings at CBS Studios from this period a bit stiff (compare Janis Joplin, for example). It is as if they were recorded from to far away. If you listen Santana's 1st in the new context it all sounds much stronger and energetic to my ears.

Santana album

After issuing three consecutive studio double LPs, Chicago topped themselves with this four-album live box set. As the title suggests, At Carnegie Hall, Vols. 1-4 (Chicago IV) (1971) finds the band at the venerable New York City venue during a five-night stand (April 5-April 10) in the spring of 1971. The septet -- which includes the respective talents of Terry Kath (lead guitar/vocals), Robert Lamm (keyboards/vocals), Peter Cetera (bass/vocals), Danny Seraphine (drums), Lee Loughnane (trumpet/vocals), James Pankow (trombone), and Walter Parazaider (woodwinds/vocals) -- were at their unquestionable peak of initial popularity. Their previous three double LPs continued extended runs on the pop album chart and likewise spawned a number of hit singles. So by the time the group hit the Big Apple for these shows, they were among the hottest things happening. Chicago's set list is wholly representative of the material from Chicago Transit Authority (1969), Chicago II (1970), and Chicago III (1971) and includes several extended multi-song medleys from each. The band winds its way through muscular versions of the epic "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon," "Travel Suite," as well as lengthy renderings of deeper cuts such as "South California Purples," "Fancy Colours," and the ten-minute-plus opening "In the Country." One of the set's most notable highlights is the politically charged "For Richard and His Friends." The lengthy and well-jammed-out cut is both groovy and propulsive. However, the acoustics at Carnegie Hall are quite frankly not (and really never have been) properly suited for heavily amplified music. While the percussion and electric guitars are clearly audible, the woodwind and brass section come off sounding extremely thin and devoid of any real timbre. This is unfortunate, as a primary component of the band is the contrasting textures between the two. Enthusiasts seeking a much more sonically accurate portrait should by whatever means necessary locate the Live in

Though there were hints of jazz fusion on Santana's first three albums, 1972's CARAVANSERAI introduced a dramatic shift in the band's sound, away from essentially pop-based music to a freer, more harmonically complex jazz/rock hybrid. In addition, the record marked a splintering of the original Santana lineup (soon to splinter further still with the departure of organist Gregg Rolie and guitarist Neal Schon, who then formed Journey). Seemingly unconcerned with the pursuit of hit singles, guitarist Carlos Santana and crew here turn in an exquisitely moody disc of mostly instrumental jamming with a brooding intensity akin to Miles Davis's classic BITCHES BREW, underscored by the San Francisco-based ensemble's trademark propulsive rhythms. The new approach reaches its apex on the fiery, Chick Corea-like "La Fuente Del Ritmo," which features future key Santana musicians Armando Pereza (percussion) and Tom Coster (piano). Also of note is bassist Doug Raunch, who replaces David Brown's meat-and-potatoes R&B playing with a more technically accomplished style that edges the group closer to Tower of Power territory. A dark and perhaps intentionally non-radio-friendly album that likely shocked many fans upon its release, CARAVANSERAI is an underrated, but important and fascinating, chapter in Santana's history. Recorded in 1972. Originally released on Columbia (31610). Includes liner notes by Hal Miller. Santana: Carlos Santana (vocals, guitar, percussion); James Mingo Lewis (vocals, piano, bongos, congas, percussion); Rico Reyes (vocals); Doug Rauch (guitar, bass); Douglas Rodrigues, Neal Schon (guitar); Hadley Caliman (saxophone); Gregg Rolie (piano, organ); Wendy Haas, Tom Coster (piano); Tom Rutley (acoustic bass); Mike Shrieve (drums); Jose "Chepito" Areas (bongos, timbales); Armando Peraza (bongos, percussion); Lenny White (castanets). 1972 .

Also available in a 3-pack with JOHNNY WINTER and CAPTURED LIVE. Johnny Winter's second album for Columbia--duh--1970's SECOND WINTER is also notorious for a gimmicky sales device. When the recording sessions were over, Winter had enough material for an album and a half; rather than add a side of filler, Columbia simply promoted the album as the world's first three-sided album. (In a snarky review, Rolling Stone sarcastically gave the blank fourth side an in-depth discussion.) The last of Winter's albums to feature his original backing band--drummer Uncle John Turner, bassist Tommy Shannon, and brother Edgar on keyboards and saxes--SECOND WINTER is a refinement of the blues-rock aesthetic of 1969's JOHNNY WINTER. Louder, harder, faster, and more reckless, this is to JOHNNY WINTER as Elvis Costello's THIS YEAR'S MODEL is to MY AIM IS TRUE: an album so phenomenal that it makes the debut, excellent though it is, sound weak in comparison. Highlights include the punky "I Hate Everybody" and a brilliant Hendrix-style deconstruction of Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited." Second Winter, Johnny Winter's second album for Columbia, originally had the distinction of being the only album in rock history that was a three-sided double LP. Musically, 35 years after its original release, Second Winter is still an oddity. Issued by Sony's Legacy division, the set has been painstakingly remastered, and expanded by bonus cuts and an entire disc of live material. It's too bluesed-out to be a pure rock record, and too psychedelically dimensioned to be a pure blues album. Tommy Shannon calls it "power blues." And as for whatever else passed for blues-rock at the time -- Cream, Hendrix, Canned Heat, etc. -- forget it. This set is a whole different animal. Cut in Nashville with all tracks begin done within one or two takes, the energy of Second Winter is undeniable. The sheer range of styles Winter assaulted in his restless quest is astonishing too. The set begins with a blues-funk cover of

Given Carlos Santana's late-career partnerships with everyone from Rob Thomas to the Black Eyed Peas, it's sometimes hard to remember that his band was a product of San Francisco's late-'60s psychedelic rock scene. While the band's music represents the wide-open aesthetic of that milieu, it also dates much better than other music of the time, in large part because of its groove-oriented accessibility and the formidable skills of the musicians. SANTANA III holds up particularly well, and sounds not a whit out of place in the mashed-up, multi-culti 2000s. The 35th Anniversary Deluxe Edition features remastered sound and a bonus disc of Santana performing live at San Francisco's Fillmore auditorium in 1971. All it takes is a listen to the opening track and you know this band means serious business. From the very first measures of "Batuka," SANTANA III rocks on the eardrums like a ton of bricks. While the band's first album and ABRAXAS were widely celebrated at the time of their release, this masterly work steamrollered to #1 on Billboard for five consecutive weeks in 1971. By this point, the band was clearly more seasoned at arranging and making the studio experience work for them--the music is at once scorching, heavy, experimental, and disciplined. Indeed, the Santana band had already come a long way on its Latin rock-blues-R&B-funk journey, and yet this would be the final recording with the original Woodstock-era lineup, with guitar genius Carlos Santana and organist/singer Gregg Rolie at the core of the action. Every track is a "deep cut." "Batuka" and "Toussaint L'Overture" feature the kind of classic, wailing Santana guitar riffs that always inspire a few notches worth of volume increase on the stereo. The band's pulsating Afro-Latin rhythm section is in full force on these tunes as well, and makes real mincemeat of the uplifting favorite, "Everybody's Everything." Following on the heels of Santana's 1970 breakthrough, ABRAXAS, 1971's SANTANA III is teeming wi

Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box. With this, his first solo album, Eric Clapton did a complete 180 from his work of the previous five years. Gone were the long, jazzy solos and rootsy Chicago blues work. In their place, Clapton was stretching as a singer and seeking to define his own song forms, inspired by the Beatles, the Band, and his new found collaborators from the southern R&B circuit, Delaney And Bonnie. ERIC CLAPTON marks Clapton's first use of the Fender Stratocaster. Its high, wirey, percussive sound stands in stark contrast to the dark, fat, singing Gibson sounds Clapton had perfected with John Mayall, Cream and Blind Faith. This new Clapton sound is quite striking, from the twangy leads on his opening instrumental "Slunky," to the cutting feints and jabs which transform J.J. Cale's "After Midnight" into a Clapton signature piece. Positioned as it is between the legendary BLIND FAITH and LAYLA sessions, ERIC CLAPTON has long been underrated by fans and critics alike, but the roots of much of what Clapton's done since 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD can be found here: the pithy melodic style of "Blues Power," the country/gospel overtones of "Bottle Of Red Wine," and the confessional tone of "Let It Rain." In addition, ERIC CLAPTON is significant both as a showcase for Clapton's emerging vocal stylings and as a proving ground for his Dominoes rhythm section of drummer Jim Gordon, bassist Carl Radle and keyboardist/vocalist Bobby Whitlock. Eric Clapton's eponymous solo debut was recorded after he completed a tour with Delaney & Bonnie. Clapton used the core of the duo's backing band and co-wrote the majority of the songs with Delaney Bramlett -- accordingly, Eric Clapton sounds more laid-back and straightforward than any of the guitarist's previous recordings. There are still elements of blues and rock & r

Petula Clark Classic Collection CDs  (1999) (Import) United Kingdom

Santana CD music
CD $18.15
CLASSIC COLLECTION contains four CDs of 1960s British pop singer Petula Clark, delving deep into her illustrious career, including huge international hits like "Downtown" and "Don't Sleep in the Subway" to lesser known covers of songs from the Temptations to the Beatles. Four-CD, 80-song box set of Clark's '60s material contains all of her big U.S. and U.K. hits, numerous singles that were only hits in other countries (usually France), and a bunch of interesting covers, B-sides, and LP tracks, some quite rare. If you're enough of a fan to want more than what you'll find on the usual thorough hits anthology, but not enough of a fan to want everything she ever did, this is perfect. It's got all of the classics, serviceable (although not terribly extensive) liner notes, and a host of interesting items that aren't well-known. These include a 1963 version of "Please Please Me" (sung in French) that was most likely one of the very first Lennon-McCartney covers; a French-sung cover of "Nobody I Know," the Lennon-McCartney tune never done by the Beatles, although Peter & Gordon had a hit with it; the original versions of "I Will Follow Him" (in English and French), covered for a chart-topper by Little Peggy March in the U.S.; yet another French-sung British Invasion cover, of the Kinks' "Well Respected Man," that was a hit in Canada; and "You're the One" (covered for a hit by the Vogues in the States). Best of all is the mid-'60s B-side "Heart" (covered by the Remains in America), a Clark original that's her hardest-rocking cut, and proof that she could muster the energy to sing rock & roll convincingly on occasion. ~ Richie Unterberger Budget-priced 1997 release from Castle's Pulse label, a fourdisc box with 80 of the pop vocalist's finest recordings!Features many great covers & all 15 of her U.S. top 40 hits, including the #1 smashes 'Downtown' & 'My Love', plus 'WhoAm I?', 'I Know A Place', 'Don't Sleep In The Subway', 'TheOther Man's Grass Is Always Greener' & 'Round Every Corner'.Slipcase box with each CD in a separate standard jewelcase.

With a sleepy, soulful delivery akin to Lucinda Williams at her sultry best, Meg Hutchinson knows the art of restraint. Though the tempo of her music rarely strays from a soothing andante, she allows drama to build from emotionally resonant lyrics and quietly engaging melodies. This album, the singer/songwriter's fifth, features 12 laid-back acoustic numbers with minimal percussion and guitar overdubs, and was released by the respected folk label Red House Records. Personnel: Meg Hutchinson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Crit Harmon (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Brad Hatfield (keyboards); Jeff Berlin (drums). Audio Mixer: Jon Lupfer.
A Long Time Comin
Mike Chinn A Long Time Comin CD  (2009)

Santana songs
CD $16.45
MIKE CHINN BIOMike has been playing and creating music since 1980. It all began with people like Neil Young, James Taylor, and Led Zeppelin. At the age of 13, he started playing guitar for anyone who would listen: in the hallways and classrooms of school, at parties, at church and so on.

By 17 he was playing in clubs with a fake ID, and by 20 was a full time musician, playing 6 nights a week, including weekends with a rockin blues band called The Urge. By the age of 23 Mike had recorded his first studio album, opened for Hall and Oates, and had played at numerous clubs and events for thousands of people in the Cincinnati area. He had regular spots on the radio doing parody songs and was making frequent trips to Nashville.

In the mid 90's Mike moved to Florida and put down his guitar for a while to focus on a family.

Several years ago he started playing again, with bands like The Saddletramps, Plaid Rabbit, The Mike n Ter Band, and now with The Invasion, who frequently opens for national acts, including The Starship, Grand Funk Railroad, Rare Earth, The Rascals, and more. Mike has also completed a second studio album of original material in entitled "A Long Time Comin", which is a fitting title to a career that is being reborn.
