| | Shivaree Breach CD Shivaree Discography of CDs
Shivaree's Breach features two originals and three choice covers that, while politically tinged (lead singer Ambrosia Parsley has appeared numerous times on Air America radio), deal less with current events than they do classic themes of social hierarchy. "I Close My Eyes" is a nocturnal romp through Nick Cave land and "657 Bed B" is a dreamy swirl of heartache performed Handsome Family-style, with winsome harmonies provided by Ed Harcourt. Most effective is the group's version of Brian Eno's "The Fat Lady of Limbourg," a track that even in 1974 simmered with Jacques Brel-esque nihilism, now given the 21st century vamp treatment by Parsley at her most Siouxsie Sioux/Gwen Stefani. Also included is a fairly sterile and straightforward version of John Cale's -- better when it's seething -- "Fear Is a Man's Best Friend" and a surprisingly poignant rendition of the Waterboys' country-folk spiritual "Strange Boat." Breach is a nifty little appetizer, but since the two best tracks are slated to appear on the impending full-length, Who's Got Trouble, anyone but die-hard fans may as well wait for the dinner to arrive. ~ James Christopher Monger

Breach album
$14.54 As a director or as a musician, Rob Zombie shows no signs of closing the door on either of his creative endeavors anytime soon. Returning with his first album since 2006's Educated Horses, after several delays following this record's completion in 2008 -- due to his work on Halloween 2, lack of promotion, and time spent shopping for a new label after 18 years of recording for Geffen -- Zombie has since gone on to say that the songs on Hellbilly Deluxe 2 were his easiest to write. This could be because it was his first outing to include help from his bandmates (longtime touring comrades guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D, and drummer Tommy C) but it's probably more attributed to the fact that making songs like these is old hat by now. "Jesus Frankenstein," "Sick Bubblegum," and "Mars Needs Women" are the same schlocky grooves that made up his five previous solo records and six White Zombie records. His trademark "yeah" and monotone ...

| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Breach album
$9.09 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken ...

| | Donny Hathaway In Performance CD (1980) Germany
Breach music CDs
$11.19 Donny Hathaway's live soul album IN PERFORMANCE includes "To Be Young, Gift and Black" and "We Need You Right Now."
Though largely revered for his studio recordings, it was on-stage that Donny Hathaway truly became a giant diamond in a sea of gems. Much like his excellent 1972 Live recording and the stellar 2004 These Songs for You, Live!, In Performance features Hathaway taking his audience to church in a way that can only be described as unique, as he truly had an individual stage presence that few others could hope to rival. In Performance isn't necessarily better than those aforementioned excellent records, but it complements them extremely well, with gritty versions of "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" and "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" leading the charge. As usual, Hathaway's delivery is ...
| | Richard Pinhas Event And Repetitions CD (2002)
Breach songs
$15.05 Pinhas' playing, on both guitar and synthesizers, has always had a strange reserve to it, even when he was leader of the powerful, riff-oriented prog rock band Heldon in the mid- to late '70s. He never comfortably assumed the mantle of a rock god, even with his natural advantage of good looks and charisma. Instead, throughout his career he has always seemed more interested in science fiction, electronic music technology, and abstruse philosophical discourse than any kind of popular acclaim. (Pre-Heldon, Pinhas even taught philosophy for a time at the prestigious Sorbonne University in Paris.) After Heldon disbanded, Pinhas made a number of solo recordings in the 1980s and early '90s that were largely ...
