This down-tempo collection of Willie Nelson love-gone-wrong classics features tracks recorded as publishers' demos, as well as songs that Nelson recorded for the Liberty label in the early 1960s, in an ultimately futile quest to make it as a solo artist in Nashville. The stripped down, primitive quality of many of these recordings naturally accentuates Nelson's quirky phrasing and attractively weathered voice, focusing attention on the songs, which include the aching title track, the regretful "Will You Remember Mine," and the sentimental "Home Is Where You're Happy."

Face Of A Fighter album
$12.19 Even as he edged towards age 70, Willie Nelson remained a dazzlingly prolific artist, releasing live albums, theme-based collections, archival recordings, and more, all at a dizzying clip. Nevertheless, a proper studio album of new material from an artist of his stature, particularly on the prestigious imprint Lost Highway, remained an event even in 2004. Curiously, the man who made his road band the backbone of his music for so long elected to use a cast of familiar Nashville studio players for IT ALWAYS WILL BE, but they serve him well on an understated set of the old, new, borrowed, and blue.
Tom Waits's spare, romantic ballad "Picture in a Frame" is a natural for Willie, ...

| | Willie Nelson Countryman CD (2005) Digipak
Face Of A Fighter music CDs
$12.59 Upon further thought, though, Nelson's laid-back sensibility, subtle
rhythmic lilt, and stoner image make his reggae album, COUNTRYMAN, seem in retrospect like an inevitability. Instead of adding his distinctive jazzy drawl and ragged guitar to a batch of reggae classics, though, Willie mostly keeps it country amid the Kingston grooves, delivering many of his own songs, as well a couple by Johnny Cash and reggae giant Jimmy Cliff.
Produced by Don Was, these tracks mostly feature L.A. session musicians doing a credible approximation of early-'70s Cliff/Toots & the
Maytals-style roots reggae, while Willie remains unflappable atop the
rhythmic change-up of the arrangements. These sessions ...

| | Willie Nelson Willie And The Wheel CD (2009) Deluxe Edition
Face Of A Fighter CD music
$15.65 Bringing Willie Nelson and Western Swing revivalists Asleep at the Wheel together for an album of Western Swing classics was a dream project for legendary producer Jerry Wexler, who had wanted to do it back in the 1970s, when Willie was still with Atlantic. (It wound up being one of the last recordings he worked on before his death in 2008.) Better late than never, Nelson and the band finally teamed up for WILLIE AND THE WHEEL.
The Wheel had recently backed Willie up on tour, so they knew just how to make their sound work for the singer, and sure enough, Nelson's vocals fit the band's tight-but-swinging sound like the proverbial glove. Tackling tunes made famous by Bob Wills and others, they keep it traditional, staying within the stylistic template established some six decades earlier, but still stamping the project with plenty of their own distinctive personality.
It was just a matter of time before Willie Nelson cut a record with fellow Texan legends Asleep at the Wheel: Willie may duet with anybody who wanders onto his bus, but he and the Wheel have a shared background in Western swing, a background they explore thoroughly on 2009's Willie and the Wheel. If it seems like Willie and the Wheel should have cut an album together a little earlier than 2009, well, they almost did. During Nelson's seminal stint at Atlantic in the early '70s, producer/label ...
| | Blues Routes: Heroes & Tricksters CD (1999)
Face Of A Fighter music CDs
$13.89 Recorded between 1990 & 1996. Includes liner notes by Nick Spitz, Leslie Spitz-Edson.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Seventeen live performances on this blues compilation, drawn from 1990-1995 recordings that were done for the Folk Masters series distributed by Public Radio International; all of these were recorded at either the Barns of Wolf Trap or Carnegie Hall. There's a lot of variety and numerous styles represented: work songs, folksy songsters, modern electric blues (Joe Louis Walker does an eight-minute "Bluesifyin"), Delta-styled blues (Robert Jr. Lockwood), piano jazz-blues, and more. It's adventurous enough to go off into some detours that aren't strictly blues, but certainly blues-related, as in the zydeco by Boozoo Chavis, the a cappella vocals of the Georgia Sea Island Singers, the jazz violin of Claude Williams, and the New Orleans trad jazz of Don Vappie and the Creole Jazz Serenaders. Many of the performers were quite elderly when they made their contributions, and while it's great that there is a venue for these guardians of tradition, much of the disc is overly polite in execution. When the White Cloud Hunters Mardi Gras Indians come on with their unbridled chants on "Sew, Sew, Sew," the energy and daring really pick up. The go-go music of Rapper Dee, C.J., and Five Gallons of Fun's "My Mind Has No Color/Doing It the Go-Go Way," with percussion performed largely on paint buckets and other found objects, is another ambitious detour worth applauding. ~ Richie Unterberger
Personnel: John Cephas, Warner Williams (vocals, guitar); Robert Lockwood, Jr., T.D. Bell (vocals, electric guitar); Abner ...
