Dirty Vegas: Steve Smith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Paul Harris , Ben Harris (guitar, keyboards). Dirty Vegas' debut was built around the dreamy, semi-mysterious single "Days Go By," a slick slice of dance-pop that sold a bunch of Mitsubishis and excused the band's shortcomings. Lyrically they were no threat to Dylan, but that didn't matter much when all the pings and pongs echoed gracefully and synths conjured up beautifully detached, nocturnal landscapes. Now they've returned with the heartfelt album One, which is filled with guitars and oh so serious, and delivered by bandmembers who are much better programmers than they are storytellers. There are hints of late-period New Order and Duran Duran on One, but none of the excitement with each wistful and maudlin track blending into the next. "Couldn't help it if I tried," "I can't stop this feeling," "Nothing ever lasts forever," and "The only thing worth living for is love" are just some of the numerous clichés used for the lyrics, and while some tracks are entirely built from them, Dirty Vegas could have just barely pulled it off if they had pulled out the old drum machine. As a guitar-based band, they have no style, and there's no evidence of inspiration guiding the beat combo switchover. One fulfills all of the "faceless" criticisms thrown at them in the past, while alienating whatever fan base they had before. ~ David Jeffries Trading their slick synth pop for guitar-based wistfulness, Dirty Vegas return after two mix albums with the entirely new One. There are hints of late-period New Order and Duran Duran on the album, and barely any of the electronic pings and pongs of the past. They're still dreamy and maudlin, and still not lyricists who will threaten Dylan, but the production is slick and hides the band's shortcomings. ~ David Jeffries ONE is Dirty Vegas's follow-up to their successful debut, which sold well on the basis of the hit single "Days Go By." But Steve Smith, Ben Harris, and Paul Harris have taken a step away from the dance-pop of their first album, moving instead in the direction of guitar-based, radio-friendly pop. Like many of their contemporaries in the mid-2000s, Dirty Vegas worship at the altar of breezy 1980s synth-pop, but ONE bears not a trace of the detached, arty feel of many post-punk-revival bands. Instead, songs like "Roses" and "Home Again" are quite traditional, building on smooth, accessible melodic passages and themes of love and longing in a way that fits Dirty Vegas for adult-contemporary radio. Though Dirty Vegas is largely considered an electronic act, the programming on ONE takes a back seat to Smith, Harris, and Harris's heartfelt songwriting, and, while there are plenty of synthesizers and stylish production flourishes, the album falls firmly in the camp of light, mainstream pop. One Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) Catchy Pop Confections It's not as synth/dance-oriented as their previous album, but the overall songwriting has improved and diversified. This is a solid pop/rock collection, with "Walk Into the Sun" and "Human Love" among the standouts. Submitted by Brian (Cleveland, OH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Dumbing down towards AOR Their first album was a real fushion of pop and dance, this one is lightweight, as if chasing the $ is more important than making great music. On the other hand if you want something to ignore then this is great music for the kitchen. Submitted by Pete (Cotswolds, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Better than before I think they renewed themselves and proved that their music is the best. Great upbeat music ... I LOVE THIS CD. Submitted by Thereza (NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Mediocre, despite the effort This band rose to prominence largely on the strength of "Days Go By". Alas, that song was unique, even to the album it was released on. "One" attempts to continue the sound of the rest of their debut album, and fails even at that. Most of these songs would be wholly forgettable, except that they try very had to dress them up. This only serves to highlight their failings. Submitted by AbslomRob (Ottawa, On) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

One
$10.45 THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES contains vintage photographs and a conversation with Justin Hayward. Producers include: Tony Clarke, 10cc, Jeff Wayne, Pip Williams, Tony Visconti. Compilation producer: Dorian Wathen. Engineers include: Tony Visconti. Recorded between 1964 and 1988. Includes liner notes by John Reed. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Audio Mixer: Tony Visconti. Liner Note Author: John Reed. This single-CD compilation doesn't do too much more than scratch the surface of the band's sound at its most popular points, but it does do one thing that no prior Moody Blues compilation ever did -- it includes "Go Now," which, as the notes point out, is still the group's top-charting single in England. What it doesn't do is get "Go Now" in really good sound (no one seems to have a proper master source) or include their even better follow-up single, "From the Bottom of My Heart." Still, this body of work is pleasing and, thanks to its extension back to the original lineup, even a little bit informative, and it was the first Moody Blues compilation to be mastered in 20-bit audio. The dominant personality is Justin Hayward, who has provided the band with most of its hits, followed somewhat distantly by John Lodge, ...

Dirty Vegas: Paul Harris, Ben Harris, Steve Smith. "Dirty Vegas" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. DIRTY VEGAS was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award For Best Recording Package. Capitalizing on the nearly ubiquitous "Days Go By" (courtesy of a Mitsubishi auto advertisement), the Dirty Vegas trio released their self-titled debut in mid-2002. The album is largely made up of rocktronica, but just consider the band's crossover potential; it's conceivable this album could be accepted by fans of Paul Oakenfold, the Verve, and *NSYNC -- all at the same time. The beats are up-tempo, but the atmosphere is nocturnal; singer Steve Smith is detached but slightly confessional, poised midway from Richard Ashcroft to Justin Timberlake. The band opens up later on the album, with a few imaginative productions slanted either toward a very smooth version of classic acid house ("Throwing Shapes") or Urban Hymns-type ballads ("Candles"). ~ John Bush Capitalizing on the nearly ubiquitous "Days Go By" (courtesy of a Mitsubishi auto advertisement), the Dirty Vegas trio released their self-titled debut in mid-2002. ...

Recording information: Criterion Studios, London, England; Studio At The Palms, Las Vegas, NV. Photographer: Anton Corbijn. On the 2006 follow-up to their wildly successful debut, HOT FUSS, the Killers' continue their torrid affair with1980s New Wave, but manage to incorporate the sounds of that era, particularly heavy use of synthesizers, more seamlessly into the mix. This is due, at least in part, to the presence of veteran producers Flood and Alan Moulder (Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, U2), who help to make the tracks on SAM'S TOWN both brighter and edgier than earlier Killers tunes. While the Las Vegas-based act's Britpop-influenced songs are still marked by Brandon Flower's emotive vocals and bold synth lines, Dave Keuning's guitar riffs are amped up on much of the record, as exemplified by the ...

| | Cher Essential Collection CD (2001)
One
$12.65 Personnel includes: Cher, Sonny Bono, Meat Loaf, Black Rose. Producers include: Sonny Bono, Snuff Garrett, Bob Esty, Giorgio Moroder, James Newton-Howard. Compilation producer: Mike Ragogna. Recorded between 1965 and 1982. Includes liner notes by Robyn Flans. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Liner Note Author: Robyn Flans. Recording information: Westside Room, Los Angeles, CA. Photographer: Mike Khoury. Arrangers: Harold Faltermeyer; Al Capps; Michel Rubini; Sonny Bono; Bob Esty. In her lengthy career, from 1965 to 1999, Cher scored singles charts entries on Imperial, Kapp, MCA, Warner Bros., Casablanca, Geffen, and Reprise Records. Because the hits are spread among three major labels (the Imperial catalog is owned by EMI; the Kapp, MCA, Casablanca, and Geffen catalogs by Universal; and the Warner Bros. and Reprise catalogs by Warner), putting together a compilation on her is a nightmare. Nevertheless, following her 1999 comeback with "Believe," Universal released four compilations in less than three ...

$13.25 Personnel: Peter Kater (piano); Peter Kater; Paul McCandless (whistle, pennywhistle, oboe, English horn, soprano saxophone); Ludvig Girdland (violin). Audio Mixer: Peter Kater. Liner Note Author: Peter Kater. Peter Kater's musical representations of fire in his ELEMENTS SERIES focus on the element's positive, life-affirming qualities rather than its destructive force, in a series of spare, delicate piano studies occasionally augmented by woodwinds and violin. Peter Kater had a playful and successful flirtation with contemporary jazz-funk in the '90s, but he's always been most at home when mastering the true art of new age piano.
