Includes liner notes by Steffan Chirazi. This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. With the 1980 release of Ace of Spades, Motörhead had their anthem of anthems -- that is, the title track -- the one trademark song that would summarize everything that made this early incarnation of the band so legendary, a song that would be blasted by legions of metalheads for generations on end. It's a legendary song, for sure, all two minutes and 49 bracing seconds of it. And the album of the same name is legendary as well, among Motörhead's all-time best, often considered their single best, in fact, along with Overkill. Ace of Spades was Motörhead's third great album in a row, following the 1979 releases of Overkill and Bomber, respectively. Those two albums have a lot in common with Ace of Spaces. The classic lineup -- Lemmy (bass and vocals), "Fast" Eddie Clarke (guitar), and "Philthy Animal" Taylor (drums) -- is still in place and sounding as alive and crazed as ever. The album is still rock-solid, boasting several superlative standouts. Actually, besides the especially high number of standouts on Ace of Spades -- at least relative to Bomber, which wasn't quite as strong overall as Overkill had been -- the only key difference between this 1980 album and its two 1979 predecessors is the producer, in this case Vic Maile. The result of his work isn't all that different from that of Jimmy Miller, the longtime Rolling Stones producer who had worked on Overkill and Bomber, but it's enough to give Ace of Spades a feeling distinct from its two very similar-sounding predecessors. This singular sound (still loud and in your face, rest assured), along with the exceptionally strong songwriting and the legendary stature of the title track, makes Ace of Spades the ideal Motörhead album if one were to choose one and only one studio album. It's highly debatable whether Ace of Spades is tops over the breakthrough Overkill, as the latter is more landmark because of its earlier release, and is somewhat rougher around the edges, too. Either way, Ace of Spades rightly deserves its legacy as a classic. There's no debating that. ~ Jason Birchmeier Feted by bikers, respected by punks, Motorhead exemplified rock's outlaw chic. On Ace Of Spades their speed-metal attack exploded with unparalleled fury. Thrashing guitars and primitive drums underpinned vocalist/bassist Lemmy, whose blooded-throat roar enhances the trio's aggression. Mind-numbingly basic and deafeningly loud, they savage rock's pomp and circumstance, rivalling 'Louie Louie' for simplicity and excitement. Chock-full of anthems for the dispossessed (witness '(We Are) The Road Crew'), Ace Of Spades is a classic of its genre. Motorhead exude the same cartoon personae as the Ramones, and as a result inspire a similar affection.
This Dualdisc features what may very well be the ultimate Motorhead anthem, a brainstorming demonstration of power and agression. The DVD side features the album, again in 5.1 surround sound, liner notes, portable music files and weblinks.Q (8/00, p.127) - Included in Q's "Best Metal Albums Of All Time" Q (10/96, pp.186-187) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...their defining moment....the title track is not so much the best song on the record as the greatest rock single ever recorded, three minutes of genuinely hair-raising rollercoasteresque Grand Prix tank racing superfast guitar-belch rock..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.51) - "[A] breathless, breakneck demolition of vintage rock 'n' roll, played with lashings of distortion and attitude..." Motorhead Ace Of Spades Songs Ace Of Spades Review

Ace Of Spades
$10.25 This remastered edition of UFO's 1975 album FORCE IT contains "Let It Roll," "Mother Mary," Shoot Shoot," and more. If UFO has one addition to rock's pantheon of classic albums, this is it. FORCE IT builds on its predecessor, PHENOMENON, by taking the band further away from their fuzzier, space-rocking early records. Guitarist Michael Schenker's playing has a new toughness and clarity that perfectly frames the more melodic, hook-oriented songwriting he developed in tandem with singer Phil Mogg. With crisp rhythms and riffs that gallop squarely on the beat, FORCE IT provides the perfect snapshot for when post-Zeppelin/glam hard rock morphed into the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. A 2008 reissue includes one previously unreleased studio track--"Million Miles"--and five live versions of album cuts. Michael Schenker and Phil Mogg really started to find their groove as a songwriting team with their second album together (and fourth UFO release overall), Force It. In fact, the last remaining folk and space rock tendencies that had ...
| | High Tide Sea Shanties CD (1969) (Import) United Kingdom
Ace Of Spades
$22.35 German reissue of their 1969 album originally released on Liberty Records. Repertoire.
Personnel: Tony Hill (guitar); Simon House (violin); Roger Hadden (drums). Liner Note Author: Mark Brennan . Recording information: 03/??/1969-07/08/1969. On this lost would-be-classic debut by English proto-prog-metal outfit High Tide, Tony Hill's vocals are a fulcrum between Ozzy Osbourne and Jim Morrison. Accordingly, the songs on SEA SHANTIES fold together Deep Purple-worthy blues-doom and more lightweight psychedelia, and even include hefty helpings of violin. But there are also Hill's virtuoso guitar solos, which fly majestically alongside the Peter Pavli's deep, Zeppelin-worthy bass. SHANTIES is a bit indulgent, but also helps complete the timeline of late-'60s heavy music. With the Misunderstood, Tony Hill co-wrote epochal psych-rock anthems like "Children of the Sun"; however, while High Tide's sound has roots in the peace-and-love era, the band was also in tune with the post-psychedelic comedown at ...
| | Thin Lizzy Black Rose CD (1979)
Ace Of Spades
$9.69 Hard rock quartet formed by Philip Lynott out of Dublin, Ireland. Thin Lizzy had numerous charting albums throughout the 70's & 80's. Black Rose was originally released in 1980. Featured guitarists are Gary Moore & Scott Gorham. 8 tracks. 2001 reissue.
Thin Lizzy: Phil Lynott (vocals, 12-string guitar, bass); Gary Moore, Scott Gorham (guitar); Brian Downey (drums). Additional personnel includes: Bluesy Hughie (harp); Jimmy Bain (bass). Producers include: Tony Visconti, Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott. Recorded at Pathe Marconi Studios, Paris, France and Good Earth Studios, London, England. Black Rose: A Rock Legend would prove to be Thin Lizzy's last true classic album (and last produced by Tony Visconti). Guitarist Brian Robertson was replaced by Gary Moore prior to the album's recording. Moore had already been a member of the band in the early '70s ...

| | Starz Violation CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Ace Of Spades
$10.45 Starz: Peter Sweval (bass guitar); Michael Lee Smith, Richie Ranno, Joe X. Dube, Brendan Harkin. Personnel: Michael Lee Smith (vocals); Richie Ranno, Brendan Harkin (guitar); Joe X. Dube (drums). Liner Note Authors: Jeff Rougvie; Pat Egan. Recording information: A&R Studios, New York, NY; Record Plant Recording Studios, New York, NY. Starz' sophomore album, Violation, was quite similar to its predecessor. Jack Douglas was still the band's producer, and Starz continued to favor the type of slick, commercial hard rock that would be called pop-metal in the '80s and early '90s. This 1977 LP didn't establish Starz as major players in the pop-metal field; the New Yorkers did have a small following, although not a huge one. Nonetheless, this is an enjoyable record. It doesn't contain any pop-metal masterpieces like Kiss' "Shout It out Loud" or Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," but tracks like "Cherry Baby" and "Rock Six Times" are certainly decent. Most of the time, Starz vocalist Michael Lee Smith sings about the same things that Kiss and Sweet were singing about in the '70s; namely, all-night ...
| | Witchcraft Firewood CD (2005)
Ace Of Spades
$13.65 Witchcraft (Hard Rock): Magnus Pelander (vocals, guitar); John Hoyles (guitar); Ola Henriksson (bass guitar); Jonas Arnesen (drums). Personnel: Magnus Pelander (vocals, guitar). Recording information: New Rising Studios (03/08/2005-03/22/2005). Photographer: Anna Ledin. Ask a group of doom metal or stoner rock enthusiasts what band was the blueprint for the doom/stoner field, and the vast majority will -- without hesitation -- say Black Sabbath. So when a band is as Sabbath-influenced as Witchcraft, it is understandable that some headbangers would describe them as a doom band. But Witchcraft isn't nearly as forceful or as heavy as Eyehategod, Orange Goblin, or Toadliquor, and Firewood isn't typical of what has been considered doom metal and stoner rock in the '90s and 2000 -- actually, this 2005 release shows no awareness of post-'80s metal or even post-'70s metal. Rather, Firewood is a total throwback to the heavy metal, hard rock, and ...
| | Anathema Eternity CD (1996) Digipak
Ace Of Spades
$9.89 Mid-price reissue of the British doom metal band's 1996 album. 2000 release. Standard jewelcase housed in a slipcase.
Personnel: Vincent Cavanagh (vocals, guitar); Michelle Richfield (vocals); Daniel Cavanagh (guitar, keyboards); Duncan J. Patterson (bass guitar); John Enrico Douglas (drums). Recording information: The Windings, Hrwd Valley, Wales (1996). Although the British band Anathema left their traditional death metal sound behind on The Silent Enigma with guitarist Vincent Cavanagh taking over vocals duties from growler Darren White, the dark themes continue. Shifting their morbid focus from God-bashing and destruction, the chaps focus on suicide and the meaningless of life. The blistering guitars have been replaced by atmospheric keyboards making this come off as a twisted combination of Pink Floyd and Peter Gabriel, and there is even some spoken poetry here. ...

| | Ministry Rantology CD (2005)
Ace Of Spades
$11.49 The tracks on this compilation were picked, produced, remixed and in some cases, updated by Ministry's Al Jourgensen. One track "THE GREAT SATAN" was previously unreleased. Ministry: Al Jourgensen (vocals, programming); Chris Connelly. Additional personnel: Gibby Haynes (vocals). Audio Remixer: Al Jourgensen. Liner Note Author: Mick Stingley. Photographer: Paul Elledge. Released in 2004, Houses of the Molé was a monster built from "N.O.W."'s genetic material. The album didn't couch its cynical nihilism in sarcastic thrash acid, as Ministry did with Psalm 69. Instead it was a bruising antiestablishment spokesthing that hammered away at George W. Bush's America lyric by lyric, song by song. Al Jourgensen stays on message with 2005's Rantology. Using a mishmash of remixed classics, live material, and one new song, "Great Satan" (one guess who he thinks that is), Jourgensen has created a shrill blast of aural protest art with one enemy in mind. There are so many W soundbites on Rantology, the president should probably get a credit as a collaborator. All of them are contextualized to embarrass, to vilify, to indict Bush in the court of Uncle Al. The famous "I'm George W. Bush, and I approved this message" campaign tag opens the set, matched to a remix of Molé's "No W"; later he's heard to recite Psalm 23 over a swirling Wagnerian chorus and steadily building tension. The original "N.O.W." is remixed here, too, updated to include both President Bushes over the jagged percussion and Jourgensen's proto-metal yawp. "Stigmata" and "Jesus Built My Hotrod" are revisited on Rantology, too, but Jourgensen doesn't alter them that much. That's probably a good thing: they were dirty and vicious enough already. In contrast, selections from weaker Ministry efforts, like Dark Side of the Spoon's "Bad Blood," add little to the set. Since he retooled Ministry as a culture war battering ram, it's been Jourgensen's angriest words and beats that resonate most; Rant could've used more of that industrialized anger alongside its manipulated Bushisms. The collection might have also found different, unreleased live material to include. Still, the three selections from 2002's Sphinctour are sufficiently loud and more than a little creepy. "I feel like my heart is being touched by Christ," ...
