From his work with the Beatnigs, the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, and Spearhead to his eclectic solo releases, Michael Franti has always been a restless artist unafraid to incorporate different styles into his diverse aesthetic. R&B, hip-hop, folk, jazz, reggae, industrial, rock, and nearly every other style under the sun has reared its head somewhere in Franti's discography.
Franti is also known for his political commitment and his unflinching lyrical observations. 2006's YELL FIRE!, written while Franti was traveling through the conflict-strewn Middle East (and making a documentary of his travels) is a case in point. The 14 personal, well-crafted songs on YELL FIRE! address the political and spiritual ramifications of war, and demonstrate the artist's trademark blending of styles in a thoughtful, engaging, and ultimately moving set.
Michael Franti's worldview and his music are so tightly entangled that it's difficult to imagine one existing without the other. For this project, I wanted to focus on making the tracks uptempo, not necessarily a dance record, and to keep them less than 6 minutes, since my previous two projects were more of a downtempo, ambient groove. The project initially started when I created a song for the UNLV Dance Department. Professor Havey approached me with a song in hand, "Blue Heat," and wanted me to make the song similar to that. "Chariots Azul" is the result. I had been working on the "In Terr" remix (originally appeared on my unofficial first cd "Dream Scenery") for quite some time. I finally finished it to my liking and included the final remix in this project. "Gene Poole" was created from a sample taken from "Cragston Loop" from the "Terra Morphic" album (which can be heard on my website).
