As fans anxiously await the third studio album from The Used - the first two went gold - the band puts its combustible live show on both CD and DVD for the first time with Berth. Along with the Toronto concert from the 2005 Taste Of Chaos tour, the package updates the bands history since 2003s video-platinum CD+DVD set Maybe Memories with footage about 2004s Top 10 In Love And Death, the world tour, the making of the new album (expected spring 2007), as well as music videos. On Berth, The Used shows why it is one of the most exciting live bands in rock. DVD HIGHLIGHTS: The Take It Away video was directed by Motion Theory (R.E.M.), I Caught Fire by Kevin Kerslake.
The Used are an amazing live band and as deserving as anyone on the screamo circuit of serious adulation (Bert McCracken is the genre's answer to Bruce Dickinson). Thus the release of another live set with video extras, BERTH, in as many studio albums, which may seem a bit excessive to some, is exactly what the band's fans want. The set dips mostly into material from their surprise Billboard Top 10 hit, IN LOVE AND DEATH, and adds three more from their debut, including "Taste of Ink," "Blue and Yellow," and "Maybe Memories." Despite the cheering crowd sounds--and the crowd certainly sounds like they are seeing a great show--the readings differ little from the studio versions. However, the set also includes live and backstage footage, making BERTH a decent souvenir for fans awaiting their next studio outing.

Two live albums in five years?? you´ve disappointed me McCraken.
this album is the same as Maybe Memories CD-DVD, but with some new songs. don´t make me waste my time dude and come back in the first released line in your next album (i hope it won´t be a concert album).

Though Detroit may never have had the instant blues recognition of a city like Chicago, it too experienced, housed, and influenced its fair share of important musicians, not the least of whom was Robert Johnson associate Calvin Frazier and, of course, John Lee Hooker. But Detroit Blues: Blues from the Motor City 1938-1954 does its best to show that the scene consisted of more than these two stars. Though the first two discs (of four!) are dedicated to Frazier and Sampson Pittman and then Hooker, respectively, the second two, and especially the last, explore the work of musicians like the prolific Baby Boy Warren, who never found much recognition beyond Hastings Street, Playboy Fuller (aka Louisiana Red), Big Maceo Merriweather, Sam Kelly, Eddie Burns, and even Joe Van Battle, a local entrepreneur and label owner, and a man who recorded a lot of the artists included here (because of the relative dearth of major studios, Detroit bluesmen weren't given as much exposure as their Windy City counterparts). The discs are not ordered chronologically, which can be a bit of an annoyance, but the detailed liner notes, which fully explain the simple, gritty, urban-industrial blues brought up from Southern workers to the factories of the North, more than make up for this. Moving from Alan Lomax field recordings and professional studio work, Detroit Blues: Blues from the Motor City 1938-1954 is a great explanation of what was happening in the city during that time period, as blues began to migrate north and become influenced by its new surroundings, as well as a great jumping-off point for an exploration of the artists who made up the lifeblood of Detroit blues. ~ Marisa Brown
