Skull Gang: Starr, Riq Rose, Richmond Rabb, John Depp, DeNiro, Unkasa, Juelz Santana. With a veritable lock on the "thug hard, get papers" school of hip-hop, rapper Cam'Ron's Diplomats (aka Dipset) crew were among the few collectives to challenge the dominance of 50 Cent's G-Unit in the late `00s rap game. Now, after wrestling from the grip of a creatively stifling contract, one of Dipset's shining stars, Juelz Santana, has assembled his own rag-tag outfit called the Skull Gang (an acronym for Street Kids United by Loyalty and Loot). Made up of Santana and rappers Richmond Rabb, John Depp, UnKasa, Deniro, and Riq Rose, along with R&B songstress Starr, SG's mix of hard-hitting, street narratives and hook-filled beats sees Santana and company poised to take their game to the next level. With his Diplomats crew at a crossroads and his solo career tied up in label problems, member Juelz Santana had to stake his claim with the help of his Skull Gang crew. Many of the tracks on their self-titled debut come from Santana's 2008 mixtape Takeover: The New Movement to Move With, where they sounded much more compressed. Here, the vibrant production benefits from the wider sound spectrum, with layered tracks like "Aggy" and "Drama Fold" coming through loud and clear. Santana's planned album with Lil Wayne gets previewed on the key track "Problems," while the party monster "I Am the Club" gets into fellow Dipset member Jim Jones' territory with a heavy beat and rock-solid hook. The Auto-Tune effect is employed way too often, but a bigger issue is how this better than expected set of tracks fails to truly introduce the crew, coming off as more of a Santana and friends release than as a proper Skull Gang debut. ~ David Jeffries Skull Gang Review

| | Rick Ross Trilla CD (2008)
Skull Gang
$12.49 This second album by Miami (by way of Haiti) rapper Rick Ross is one of the most hotly anticipated sophomore releases of the year. This collection is a more than respectable follow-up to his monster debut. The album--produced by J-Rock, the Runners, Cool & Dre, and others--features the hit single "Speedin'," with guest singer R. Kelly. Two years after the Trick Daddy protégé hit the scene with his exceptional debut, PORT MIAMI, Rick Ross follows up with another thorough studio album rife with vivid gangsta storytelling and hard-thumping neo-G-Funk. On the whole, TRILLA is more party-oriented than the brooding PORT OF MIAMI, as Ross collaborates with a formidable group of big names from the worlds of contemporary R&B and hip-hop (R. Kelly, Trey Songz, T-Pain, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Nelly, Mannie Fresh, ...
| | Braille IV Edition CD (2008) Bonus Track
Skull Gang
$13.15 With an acrobatic freestyle-feeling flow reminiscent of Rakim, Portland, Oregon, rapper Braille has amassed a legion of fans for his upbeat brand of hip-hop. On 2008's THE IV EDITION, as on previous records, the MC works with a slew of producers, resulting in an ever-evolving sound; however, a jazzily lo-fi sort of underground feel permeates the record. Braille is upfront about his Christian bent, and while a religious outlook abounds in his music, it's a universal positivity exemplified by "Constantly Growing Beat," a track featuring a welcome cameo from Speech of Arrested Development. "I'm an MC y'all, I am who I am," Braille ...
| | Estelle Shine CD (2008)
Skull Gang
$11.25 The debut album from British R&B ingénue Estelle (the first artist signed to John Legend's Homeschool label) is delightfully difficult to pigeonhole. The effervescent single "American Boy" harks back to party-hearty, Chic-era disco, while other tracks ("More than Friends," "Back in Love") showcase Estelle's rich, emotional voice. "Pretty Please Love Me" (featuring Cee-Lo) is a slice of classic Philly soul, while reggae-tinged songs like "Magnificent" suggest Rihanna's wiser older sister. Most remarkable is how Estelle's lady-like moxie shines ...

| | Trepanning Trio Man Killed The Bird CD (2008)
Skull Gang
$10.15 The Compositions of David Mansbach:"There is a folk legend of a little boy who finds in the forest a bird with a beautiful song and brings it home. He asks his father to bring food for the bird. The father doesn't want to feed a mere bird, so he kills it. And the legend says the man killed the bird, and with the bird he killed the song, and with the song, he killed himself. He dropped dead, completely dead, and was dead forever." ~Joseph Campbell Trepanning Trio is based around the post-classical / avant-chamber speculation of artist/musician/writer David Mansbach.
