Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several different moods and textures, full of the elliptical, poetic lyrics that were Morrison's trademark.
The weakest studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and strings on about half the tracks weren't entirely successful. More to the point, though, this was their weakest set of material, low lights including filler like "Do It" and "Runnin' Blue," a strange bluegrass-soul blend that was a small hit. On the other hand, about half the record is quite good, especially the huge hit "Touch Me" (their most successful integration of orchestration), the vicious hard rock riffs of "Wild Child," the overlooked "Shaman's Blues," and the lengthy title track, a multi-part suite that was one of the band's best attempts to mix rock with poetry. "Tell All the People" and "Wishful Sinful," both penned by Robbie Krieger, were uncharacteristically wistful tunes that became small hits but were not all that good, and not sung very convincingly by Morrison. [The limited edition remastered gold disc version contains 40th anniversary remixes of "Touch Me" and "The Soft Parade.] ~ Richie Unterberger

Soft Parade Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) Not bad, has been compressed, dubious musical value Comparing waveforms (on his own site, quickly deleted by censors) shows that Hoffman used compression on this remastering, or that the compression was on whatever digital copy he mastered from. It doesn't sound bad, but the advertising claims are flat out false. Not a great Doors album, this one is an oddity at best, a failed experiment with a few good songs and the rest..well... Compression on Audio Fidelity CDs The original mixes are compressed on the Steve Hoffman mastered CD.
Regardless of ones opinion of the sound, these CDs should not reveal compression beyond that used during mixing. The 1988 Elektra CD reveals that the original mixes are available without the compression that is found on the AF CD. Since AF states they are using the original master tapes and that they are not adding compression in anyway, there should not be more compression on their release. If anything, copy tapes would have more compression than master tapes. For instance, if the 1988 CD was made from a copy and the AF was made from the master, the AF should have the same, or greater dynamic range. Oddly, the 40th anniversary remixes do not reveal the compression that has been applied to the original mixes.
I do not agree that HDCD makes this better than the unreleased DCC master. That master has the dynamics in it that this one should have. HDCD drops the level -6db. Peak extension is not enabled on any AF HDCD thus far, so there is no gain in dynamic range there.
I'm one of the guys that put up waveforms showing the compression on SH.tv. I got soft banned for showing the clipped peaks on the AF Rod Stewart - Never A Dull Moment (My account wasn't banned, but I can't do anything if I log in).

GREAT! Being HDD it's better than the "unreleased" DCC Gold Edition!

Soft Parade This is one of the best CDs of all time. I listen to it all the time on Vinyl. This album sounds best when listened to on vinyl. I reccomend this album to everybody. It's very eclectic in its musical taste. Spanish guitar, jazz keyboards, driving drums, and the voice of an amazing poet reciting the most perfect of lyrics. The Soft Parade is very eclectic and provides a sound to intrigue every person from every walk and inspire you to create your own soft parade.

Soft Parade album
$25.65 Initially renowned as Bob Dylan's backing group, the Band emerged from the singer's shadow to proclaim a distinctive talent. Drawing upon a musical canon embracing soul, country, folk and rock `n' roll, the quintet created a unique sound that was quintessentially American. Its rustic qualities were enhanced by principle songwriter Robbie Robertson who created vistas suggestive of a pre-industrial age, and as such, captured the restlessness of the late 60s without the need for explicit manifestos. Expressive singing, sublime melodies and telepathic musicianship instils The Band with quality, but its adult themes and perspectives ensure an absolute timelessness. An all-time critics' favourite.
The Band's first album, Music from Big Pink, seemed to come out of nowhere, with its ramshackle musical blend and songs of rural tragedy. The Band, the group's second album, was a more deliberate and even more accomplished effort, partially because the players had become a more cohesive unit, and partially because guitarist Robbie Robertson had taken over the songwriting, writing ...

Soft Parade MP3 Album
$20.15 (MP3 Available for Download) Although it still contained elements of their two preceding albums' heavy metal garage rock, Alice Cooper's 1972 release SCHOOL'S OUT expanded on the more progressive material of '71s KILLER (i.e., its title track and "Halo of Flies"). The majority of the songs were more sophisticated than the group's past work, with greater use of dynamics. The band was working under tight a deadline ...

Soft Parade songs
$14.42 Feted first as underground heroes, then reviled as teeny-bop stars, the Doors threw off such conundrums with this magnificent release. MORRISON HOTEL reaffirmed their blues roots, stripping away some of the psychedelia of their early releases and the orchestral ambitions that weighted albums like THE SOFT PARADE. The opener, the powerful "Roadhouse Blues," is a case in point. Based on a classic ...
