| | Creamies Cherry On The Top Etc. CD (2007)
Think Green
$18.99 The Creamies were formed in London in 1980 by singer/songwriter/producer Harold Burgon (under the moniker of Big H). The bandās live shows were downright anarchy, with a blasting rock/reggae/dub energy and much excursioning into the crowd with Big H goading the audience to participate or riot. The band always started the show with a song called āDamageā which commenced with a barage of 5 flourishes akin to a stadium bandās grandest finale. After this, the place was totally āfired-upā. The onslaught continued unabated until, on occasions, most of the audience was on-stage and bellowing the choruses, beating cowbells/drums and equipment and dancing their asses off. The shows always ended with their anthem āOne Worldā which was known to last up to one hour with guest musicians and audience alike taking risky solos. Many promoters barred the group from their venues after they had experienced the euphoric abandon that threatened their public-order licences. The band only released one independent single in 1984 āCherry on the Topā which got a lot of play on Indie radio, but never charted. In 1982 EMI records got interested in the group, but fought shy of signing them as their head of publishing said that the lyrical content ...

| | Dunes Subject To Change CD (2009)
Think Green
$13.15 The Dunesā sophomore album, Subject to Change, is about asking, discovering, deciding and moving forward. From the personal to the political, on small and grand scales, thatās what this Toronto-based rock band has done since releasing its 2006 debut, Socializing With Life.āThis album is kind of a story. Itās an actual album,ā says lead singer/songwriter Kevin Pullen, referring to the well thought out sequence of the 12 songs. āItās meant to be listened to in its entirety. It is titled āSubject to Changeā because it made sense on so many levels. Change, for one, within the band, as in the line-up; and lot of changes in my personal life ā I lost a love; and I was involved in a kind of reckless lifestyle which came along with some deep depression and finally some light again. Itās a cycle.āEmerging with a new outlook and happier mind-set, Subject to Change was produced by Siegfried Meier (Machete Avenue, Thine Eyes Bleed) at Beach Studios situated on his farm in Goderich, Ontario, in the dead of winter. The band ā now comprising Alistair Heath (lead guitar, vocals), John Dolinar (bass, vocals) and Paul Barry (drums, vocals) ā all slept in a trailer, steps away from the studio, and away from any distraction that Toronto might have provided. With these new batch of songs, there was also a change in sound from the first Dunes recordings. Piano and organ are all over the album; more than half feature strings; one has trumpet (āLos Angelesā) and another clavonette (āSame Insideā). āThatās what I missed out on the first record. The budget didnāt allow it,ā says Kevin. The band has since recruited multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Panda to the lineup in order to handle those parts onstage.āIt was good that this happened, that I now have a whole new band, and I donāt think that itās unusual,ā says Kevin. āI was green at the beginning. I didnāt know what was going on. Now, we have a solid foundation. We all want the same thing. We want to take this to the world stage.āKevin, who has been writing songs since the age of 13, but didnāt join or form a band until The Dunes (āI had no balls back then so I just did it for myself,ā he laughs), cut the first album in 2004 with producer Matt Wagner of the band Alpha Galates. With the original line-up, the Dunes made significant inroads, landing a record deal with Toronto indie label Curve Music, which released Socializing With Life. The band subsequently had a top 40 rock radio hit with the single, āDo It All The Time,ā whose video was placed in heavy rotation for months on MuchMusic, MuchMoreMusic and MuchLoud. The album was also released in the U.K., Germany, Holland and Switzerland, and the band promoted it in England and Scotland with a two-week tour in 2007. āTo be honest, the first record, we wanted good things to happen with it, but I didnāt know anything would. I made it for me with the hope that something ...
