Alone in the Dark (1982) 4 stars Top Seller Widescreen; DTS Sound
DVD $8.49 Buy It Details

3 starsOh What Could Have Been...
With an interesting story, legendary actors and creepy scenery, I eagerly anticipated seeing "Alone in the Dark." Firstly the four crazy freaks were awesomely wicked and creepy as hell (especially Preacher!). "The Bleeder" was the most interesting of the bunch though. There's also some supense here and there mixed in with a little black comedy. But as much as I wanted to love this film, there were a few things that spoiled it for me. First and foremost was the pacing of the film, it was too slow and killed any build-up to the action sequences which were very disappointing. Most of the killing sequences were very lame as well. And the ending was so-so to top it all off. All in all "Alone in the Dark" is worth watching at least once for the classic acting of the four psycho freaks alone but after that it's hard to say....

Funhouse (1981) 4 stars Universal Studios Home Video
DVD $12.99 Buy It Details

4 starsPretty Good
"The Funhouse" is an early 80's slasher flick directed by Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre & Poltergeist). It follows four teenagers who go to a carnival and decide to spend the night in the spooky funhouse. Needless to say things don't go as planned and we are in for a nice thrill ride, literally. The creepy music fits along nicely with what's happening and there's some really weird characters as well that make it all the more twisted! My only complaints are the monster shoulda had better make up effects to make it more realistic and some of the killings could have been better. All in all great, original entertaining 80's slasher. Not many people know about this film but every horror fan should definitely check this out!

5 starsMurphy in His Prime!
"Beverly Hills Cop" showcases one of Eddie Murhpy's finest performances. There's enough action and comedy throughout this film to keep your attention the entire time! Murphy's character, Axel Foley is very unpredictable and hilarious. The action scenes are great. When Murphy gets thrown through a random window, I just couldn't stop laughing haha. "Beverly Hills Cop" is a great film and one of Murphy's best. Check this!

4 starsFunny as Hell!
"The Jerk" is a great comedy film that showcases a side of Steve Martin that I've never seen before. Not being a big fan of his, Martin really made me laugh in this film. Let's just say he's not your typical white boy. He's raised by a black family and doesn't really know how to make good decisions or say the right things, which never fail to make you laugh. Definitely check this film out.

Pieces (1983) 3.3 stars
DVD $20.49 Buy It Details

4 starsGreat Slasher
"Pieces" is an under the radar 80's slasher flicks. Filled with great gore and nudity, this flick is pretty entertaining. The music played when the killer attacks is suspensful and great. Several different woman are sliced to bits while the killer takes random body parts to create the ultimate puzzle. The identity of the killer isn't known and it kept me guessing til the end. If you can ignore some of the cheesiness and ok acting, this film is great. An 80's gem that definitely needs more recognition!

Humanoids from the Deep (1980) 4 stars Widescreen
DVD $15.85 Buy It Details

4 starsGreat 80's Monster Flick
"Humanoids From the Deep" is one of the best 80's monster flicks ever made. It's about a science experiment gone wrong that creates mayhem in a small fishing town. The town is being attacked by killer fishmen. Although this film is kinda cheesey, there is some nice sound effects throughout that make you jump and good gore as well. And of course there's some really hot chicks with some nudity! These wacky monsters kill the dogs and men but rape the women (which looks hilarious). There's also some good action and laughs. Definitely check this out!

Thirteen Ghosts (2001) 3.9 stars Widescreen

4 starsGood Flick!
"Thirteen Ghosts" starring Tony Shalhoub (Monk) and Shannon Elizabeth (Nadia from American Pie), is a haunted house flick with originality! A family inherits a house from their uncle but this isn't just any normal house. Little be known Uncle Cyrus was a ghost hunter! The house is unlike any other ever created, entirely made out of glass and machine operated (you have to see to believe...amazing). It's too good to be true however, too bad there's tons of killer ghosts in the basement waiting to get unleashed! The ghosts are very freaky and wicked. There's lots of jumps and twists and turns to go along with all the action. The only letdown with this flick is I wish there was more deaths and more of the ghosts did the actual killings. There are a handful of deaths, some by the ghosts and some by others. Overall for being a remake....yes a remake, this is a great flick worth checking out!

Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) 2 stars Widescreen; DTS Sound
DVD $12.99 Buy It Details

3 starsDecent Flick, HORRIBLE Freddy!
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" is one of the greatest franchises in horror film history. The original flick was classic, mainly because of a strong performance by Freddy Kruger (played by Robert Englund). Sadly in this "Nightmare on Elm Street" remake words can't describe what a joke Fred Kruger is. The whole background story on Freddy was disappointing. I thought it would have been more gruesome. His face is computer animated (very wack) and his voice is horrible. Aside from Freddy however this film does deserve some credit. The plot was interesting. When Nancy finally discovered her past and seen the picture, I loved the suspense. It was also very suspenseful when Nancy and her friend go to the old school and go into Freddy's "special room" and discover old photo's of Nancy. The special effects were done pretty well. There are also some good killings, although there are only 6 altogether. Overall this film is worth checking out if you can ignore the horrible reimaging of Freddy but the original "Nightmare" was wayyyyy better!

Scarecrows (1988) 4 stars Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Sensor Matic

3 starsToo much is left unexplained...
Being a big fan of 80's slasher films, I couldn't wait for this flick to arrive. "Scarecrows" has all the right elements to be a great horror tale but fails somewhat short. The film starts off with the fugitives in a plane (why not show us them breaking out and taking the hostages? More action and a cool opening intro would have been great). While fleeing authorities, the fugitives end up landing in a cornfield and eventually get atacked by killer scarecrows. The cornfield and woods scenery was great. The scarecrows were freaky and original. There was some good killings and gore as well. The scene where the fugitive gets turned into a scarecrow was pretty sweet. However, there were some things that bugged me. Firstly we are never given a story on the scarecrows and how they come to life. We are constantly shown a picture of three men hanging on the wall in the Fowler house...are those the scarecrows? Also there is long periods of time between the killings which kinda drags. The ending was alright but was a let down because none of the scarecrows get killed and nothing really gets solved. Woulda been cool if the cops showed up and got attacked by the scarecrows with a great action-packed ending. All in all "Scarecrows" is a pretty good flick, not a Gem but worth checking out.

1 starsNot so good...
I always remember seeing "House" on the shelf at my local Block Buster when I was a kid. After all these years, I finally decided to check this out. Being a huge fan of 80's horror and comedy films, I must say this film was a huge disappointment. From the beginning it's pretty weird and hard to follow. The comedy was very lame to say the least. After about a half hour and still trying to figure out what's going on, I threw in the towel. Definitely an 80's film to forget.

Madman (1981) 3.8 stars Standard Screen; Soundtrack English

4 starsGet This...
"Madman" is an early 80's camp slasher flick that is surprisingly good. The legend of "Madman Marz" is tested when an immature teen, Richie makes the misake of screaming his name. From then on all hell breaks loose as the Madman starts killing everyone one by one. From knocking off heads to being hung, to being smashed in the car hood, the killings are done well for the most part. Love the campy atomsphere and the opening scene around the fire when T.P. is telling the stories has that classic creepy feel to it...awesome. Although the "Madman Marz" character is kinda cheesy with the goofy noises he makes and the cheap sound effects throughout, this film is definitely worth having. "Madman" is another underrated early 80's slasher gem up that's right up there with "The Burning". Can't wait for the 30th anniversary edition dvd!.....Release it already!

Hatchet (2007) 3.5 stars
DVD $12.99 Buy It Details

3 starsReally Wanted to Love this Film....
I've been following "Hatchet" since it was first announced years ago and it instantly grabbed my attention. After viewing the trailer, I felt this film could bring fresh air to the slasher genre and have that good ol classic 80's feeling of yesteryear (Love 80's flicks :) ). The story of Victor Crowley's death and his swamp legend were great. The swamp scenery was awesome. Hell it even features three of the biggest horror movie icons in existence; Robert England (Freddy Kruger), Tony Todd (Candyman) and Kane Hodder (Jason Vorhees) all in one flick! The big downfall to this flick is the characters dialogue is wayyyyy too cheesy. Just about everything leads into a joke, which many are amusing but it's still too much laughing for a horror flick. The writer's must have tried too hard to please us 80's fans. Also when Victor Crowley is shown, his make-up appearance is terrible. He looks like a joke, the scenes with him running around chasing and attacking his victims look hilarious (and not in a good way mind you...). However this flick does have some nice killing scenes. But also some of the killings are so brutual, they look all too fake though as well. All in all even though this film had the potential to make an impact in the horror world, "Hatchet" is a decent flick at best and also reminiscent to the classic 80's slasher genre that I love. It's still worth a watch here and there. Just because I didn't rate it higher doesn't mean you won't so give it a chance. Also look out for the sequel, "Hatchet II" coming out this Fall (2010), it's supposed to be much darker and improved!

Stepfather (2009) 1 stars Top Seller Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled; Unrated
DVD $12.99 Buy It Details

1 starsThe Best Remake Since "Prom Night" HAHA!
The original "The Stepfather" (1987), was a classic. Terry O'Quinn played a fabulous role as Jerry Blake aka the killer daddy. O'Quinn played the role so well it's hard to imagine any actor even coming close to his level. O'Quinn even reprised his role in the sequel, "The Stepfather II" (1989) and he was just as memorable. Now in 2009 "The Stepfather" remake is released with Dylan Walsh as the killer daddy. Needless to say, Walsh's acting came nowhere near O'Quinn's; he was outright terrible. However the story was interesting and the characters (aside from Walsh's) were good and likeable, but that's the only positives about this film. The killings were TERRIBLE....the sequences were soooo bad; it was unreal. There was no blood at all, just an absolute mess. The ending was a train wreck and the icing on the cake to solidify this as one of the worst horror film remakes ever! This film is NOWHERE CLOSE to the original. An absolute waste!

2 starsNot nearly as good!
No one can deny that the original "Jaws" is and always will be the best shark movie ever made. "Jaws II" was a great sequel but still couldn't compare its classic original. What made "Jaws II" most enjoyable was Roy Scheider reprising his role as "Chief Brody." However "Jaws III" completely goes off the deep end! Mainly filled with terrible underwater scenes (minus the underwater theme park scenes). The shark looks terrible and not even frightening. All the underwater shark scenes are slow and lame! This film is nowhere near as entertaining as it's predecessors. It's also disappointing that Roy Scheider is nowhere to be found. The characters, who are all new, are nothing special either. The whole Sea World Waterpark setting is great and interesting but the writers and directors failed miserably at creating this film. No suspense and not much good action. The most memorable scene is when the camera is shown from the sharks view and the guy is in it's mouth being eaten! On the positive note...this film does have some nice scenery with the beach and water park scenes but that's about all! Easily skippable film.

5 starsAwesome....and Action Packed!
"Con Air" is one of the best films to come out of the 90's. Starring two of my favorite actors, Nicholas Cage as "Cameron Poe" and John Cusack as "Vince Larkin". This film keeps your eyes glued from start to finish with a great interesting story and characters. Great plane and fighting scenes throughout, which are done perfectly. The ending scenes in Las Vegas are awesome as well. "Con Air" is a classic in every sense.

Shocker (1989) 4.3 stars Top Seller Widescreen
DVD $12.99 Buy It Details

3 starsLetdown
Wes Craven's "Shocker", claiming to be the next big horror franchise following-up his highly successful "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series. Horace Pinker was supposed to be the next big horror film icon just like Freddy Kruger. Saddly this film failed in every category. The beginning of "Shocker" actually starts out good with the Horace Pinker killings, especially the four cops. The kid dreaming of his own family being murdered and all was creepy. There was some good suspense mixed with a little cheesiness that worked pretty well. Even the electrocution scene was great. However it's unfortunate that everything after that just went off the deep end. I don't know what Craven was thinking while filming this flick. Horace Pinker switching from body to body was very dumb. Craven should of had a better, more suspenseful way of using Pinker's character. The film was way too cheesy to take seriously. Craven definitely dropped the ball on this flick. "Shocker" is a Craven film that is easily skippable.

4 stars80's Gem
"C.H.U.D." standing for "Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers" is an 80's horror film like no other. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission secretly dumped radioactive chemical toxic waste beneath the streets of New York without telling anyone. All is good and well until the waste leaks, effecting the homeless people living underground and transforms them into freaky flesh-eating creatures. The film follows different characters investigating the disappearances of many of the underground population. Police captain "Bosch" is searching for his wife. Daniel Stern plays a great role as A.J. "The Reverend" Shepherd. Great interesting story mixed with some suspense and good comedy. We even get a cameo by John Goodman playing the role of a cop. This film does have some flaws. Not many kill scenes were shown which is not good. Also the creatures really aren't explained too well and the ending leaves us hanging. BUT overall "C.H.U.D." is an unknown 80's gem worth checking out.

4 starsGood
I always remember this movie being on the top shelf of my neighborhood video store when I was a kid, but never viewed it until now.... "The Return of the Living Dead Part II" follows the same direction as the original classic, "ROTLD" with the comedy/horror zombie invasion. Some of the original cast return as different roles in this film, which is interesting. The zombies have been upgraded from the original and are shown more often, which is good. The plot was good; I liked the whole canister in the tunnel idea. The killing scenes were nice and gory! The ending very great and original. Gotta love cow brains haha. Good film but would have been better if there was a little less comedy. Check it out!

DVD $15.99 Buy It Details

5 starsGreat Zombie Flick!
"The Return of the Living Dead", created by John Russo is considered the sequel to the 1968 "Night of the Living Dead". Russo and George A. Romero created the original "NOTLD" together and split apart with Romero creating his version of the sequel with the 1978 classic, "Dawn of the Dead". However Russo's "The Return of the Living Dead" goes in a different direction than Romero's film and has every element needed to be a classic. This film has a great 80's feeling and setting along with an interesting plot and characters. Adding some comedy to the mix worked really well! The scenes shot in the cemetery were really detailed and great. Linnea Quigley running around most of the movie completely nude was classic. The zombies were different than Romero's, being able to run and talk, mainly stating the memorable line, "Brainnnnnn". The zombie killing scenes were great as well. This film was unlike any other zombie flick made at the time which makes it very original and classic. A must have for any horror fan.....A must have for any 80's movie fans....Classic! "Send more cops" haha!

5 starsDifferent but Great!
The master of zombie flicks, George A. Romero, follow's up his classic '78 film, "Dawn of the Dead" from a different perspective. In "Day of the Dead" the main setting is an army base and underground bunker where a group of scientists and army soldiers are trying to survive the dead. The earth is overpopulated with zombies, outnumbering humans 400,000 to 1. The first 50+ minutes are mainly focused on building the characters and tension between the soldiers and scientists, setting up for the second half of the film, which is literally to die for! Action packed with great killings and gore leading to a great conclusion. Loved the whole zombies in the cave idea, very very creepy and classic! "Bub" the talking, music loving, gun shooting zombie is classic as well. Tom Savini does another excellent job at the special effects, making it unbelievably real. Another 80's Gem and a great film in George A. Romero's resume. A must have!

"Dawn of the Dead" is everything a great zombie movie needs to be. Filmed in late 1977 into early 1978, the main setting of film is Monroeville Mall in Monroeville, PA (which I've been to many of times). I was glued to the screen the whole time, this film is filled with lots of great scenery, killings and action. Tom Savini did an excellent job doing the special effects. This film is FILLED with BLOOD and GORE, especially when the zombie's bite people and when the zombie's get shot in the head. Nothing is held back in this film! Loved the helicopter scenes and all scenes shot in the mall were amazing. There is no doubt George A. Romero created one of the best zombie films ever made. For being a 70's flick, "Dawn of the Dead" sure as hell stood the test of time. CLASSIC all the way!

2 starsDisappointing
"Night of the Demon's" could have been a great 80's horror movie, but it failed miserably. The demons are so cheesy and lame. The film goes over 50+ minutes before the first demon appears and the first killing happens. Basically when most of the characters turn into demons, they just chill in the mansion and appear here and there. No memorable moments, terrible ending, terrible acting, terrible everything. Two stars for some good killings (eye gouging and tongue eating) and some hottt nude chicks. Don't waste your money on this flick. Not an 80's film I want to remember.

The housekeeper, Mrs. Mallow (played by Sylvia Kristel) is very sexy and is seen naked quite a few times! Lots of laughs throughout from Phillip's fat friend, "Sherman", his limo driver, "Lester" and his tennis coach (played by Ed Begley Jr.). "Captain Wild Bill Kelso" is classic in every scene. Also the Slim Pickens "Tree" scene is piss your pants hilarious!!! 5 starsClassic in Every Sense...
"Halloween" is a nail biter. From the opening scene to the closing moments it will keep you on the edge of your seat in suspense. John Carpenter does an excellent job directing and Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence have great roles as Laurie Strode and Dr. Loomis. The music is so creepy and suspenseful that it puts chills down your spine everytime. There are many jumps along the way as well. The killing scenes were great along with the ending. "Halloween" is without a doubt of the best horror movies ever made. A must have for any horror movie fan! ....Also check out the sequel, "Halloween II"....

4 starsGood
"Ski School" is an early 90's film that reflected on the 80's in every possible way. From the laughs to the hottt chickies (and nudity (with a couple sex scenes)) it definitly keeps your attention. There is some great skiing scenes as well. My favorite scene is where two guys from Reid's camp are tricked and end up in bed together while being filmed, classic comedy! Although not as good as "Hot Dog", "Ski School" is still worth checking out.

4 starsOldie but Goodie
Peter Sellers is hands down one of the funniest actors of all time. Being a big fan of his "Pink Panther" films, I snatched up this film with high expectations. "The Party" has Sellers collaborating with director Blake Edwards (also of "Pink Panther" fame) and has many similar style jokes. Sellers, who plays the role of Hrundi V. Bakshi is just as accident prone as his Inspector Clouseau character. Great scenery, great characters and great laughs. The drunken butler is some of the funniest scenes I've ever seen! I don't care how old this film is, it definitely stands the test of time. Highly Recommended.

5 stars80's American Pie
"Hot Moves" is where the creators of "American Pie" got the idea from. This film about four high school dudes who want to lose their virginity before summer. This film is filled with lots of hottt girls, nudity and laughs. There is some music scenes that last a bit long but they fit in pretty nicely. "The Nude Beach" scene is classic. Good 80's teen sex comedy gem. Glad I found it!

Max is 15 million dollar experimental dog with enhanced senses and capabilities and a killer instinct. He seems like a fun loving dog at first...but then he snaps! "Man's Best Friend" is a great thriller with an interesting plot and likeable characters. Very entertaining film that makes you feel sorry for Max one minute then fear him the next. Check this out. Cujo was in infamous killer dog in the 80's but in the 90's Max takes that title.

4 starsTitle Says It All!
If you like cheesy 80's sex comedies that make no sense, "Screwballs" is the movie for you! Five dudes at T and A High School get detentions and end up forming a group that does pranks to everybody from the teachers to the hottt chickies. As advertised there is lots of nudity and laughs along with some good music. The "Bowling Scene" is classic. Although not near the level of "Porky's", "Screw Balls" is still a good watch and has some replay value.

5 starsVery Creative!
Coming off the huge success of "National Lampoon's Animal House" and "The Blues Brothers", director John Landis changes directions with "An American Werewolf in London". Blending comedy with suspense and bloody murder, this film is as good as it gets! Very original and very creative (especially with the nightmares and the living undead), it will make you laugh one moment and leave you in suspense the next. Definitly recommended. Simply Love It!

5 starsVery Entertaining!
"Three O'Clock" high is a great 80's high school comedy. It follows Jerry, a high school student who's having the worst day of his life. Getting to school late, looking like an idiot infront of a beautiful girl and worst of all...touching Buddy Revell...the nasiest bully of them all! Buddy challenges Jerry to a fight after school at 3:00. So we follow Jerry throughout the day leading up until the big hour. Lots of laughs pursue leading to a great showdown and ending. One of the best high school comedies I've ever seen. Glad I found it on here. Recommended.

4 starsDennis Hopper Can't Be Any Funnier!
I never heard of this film until recently and am sure glad I found it! This is a great 80's comedy gem that is so unpredictable it's great. It's about Mike, a high school senior that has to come up with a science project or not graduate. He finds this odd looking device (which ends up being a time warp) in an airplane junkyard and slowly but surely it builds up energy and unloads hell! Dennis Hopper was hilarious as the hippie science teacher, Bob Roberts. "My Science Project" is filled with lots of action and laughs, definitly check this out.

5 starsSimply Awesome!
I love everything about this movie. The characters, the action, the music and the laughs! This movie has a little bit of it all. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd play as Jake and Elwood Blues, The Blues Brothers. Together they try to raise money for their childhood church and end up being chased by police (John Candy included), the nazi's, even another band and the owner of a bar. Who could forget the classic "Mall Scene". For as long as this movie is, it kept every bit of my attention the whole way through. CLASSIC!

5 starsOne of the BEST....
This movie is simply classic. John Cusack plays a great role as Lane Myer, a high school kid who's obsessed with his girl friend. When his girl friend dumps him, he trys to end his life in many ways. I haven't laughed this hard in a long time! With non-stop laughs throughout, your eyes will be glued to the screen. From the holes in the cereal boxes, to all the attempted suicides backfiring and all the scenes featuring Chuck "Porky" Mitchell and David Ogden Stiers (Lane's Dad) are great. This is my favorite Cusack movie and one of the best comedies of the 80's. A must have classic! "GIVE ME MY TWO DOLLARS!!!"

Stepfather 2 - Make Room for Daddy (1989) 4.3 stars Widescreen
DVD $14.95 Buy It Details

4 starsVery good follow-up
Very rarely do sequels ever live up to the hype but with "Stepfather II" it does. "The Stepfather" was a great film mainly in part to Terry O'Quinn's phenomenal role as the psychotic killer daddy. Quinn reprises his role in this sequel and is just as great. The story kept my attention from beginning til end just like the original and the killing scenes were very good as well. The wedding scene ending was classic. Definitly worth having in your collection.

4 starsGreat Slasher Film
A group of kids play a prank on a camp counselor leaving him permanently disfigured. Years later (armed with garden shears) he returns to the camp bent on revenge. This is a great movie that's mainly known for being Jason Alexander's (George from Seinfeld) first movie role. The setting of the movie at the camp is beautiful. The killing scenes and weapon of choice (big garden shears) are great. How could anyone forget the classic infamous "raft scene." Only con about this film that we go about 30-40 minutes without any killings for the character developement (which is wayyyy too long). Minus that, this is definitly an 80's slasher gem. Check it out.
