5 starsFagen takes us back to the future...
Donald Fagen's audio time travelogue to the late 50s and early 60s is the work of a true visionary, as he's been rightly called. Beautifully conceived and executed, the first of three concept albums is a phenomenal start to a great trilogy (with Kamakiriad and Morph the Cat equally as wonderful). The mastering could use a brush up with the newer technology available, but in the early 80s, when it was recorded, all-digital recordings were still being pioneered and this was one of the better efforts, along with Joe Jackson's Body & Soul being another. Pick up "Nightfly," turn down your lights and let Donald Fagen transport you to another time and place, where Chesterfield Kings, the space race and visions of a "streamlined" world with "spandex jackets for everyone" were part of the culture of the time.

5 stars"Elton John" - better than ever
While Elton John the man has evolved many times in his legendary career, which at this writing was still moving forward, the "Elton John" album is a product of its time. One can hear the "brooding singer-songwriter" style of the very early 70s in effect here. Still, Elton and Bernie Taupin's songwriting, though arguably still very green at this point, offered so much promise of good things to come, and also manages some moments of sheer brilliance even this early on in their career. "Your Song," for instance, still rings as innocent, honest and lovely today as it did almost 40 years ago. What has changed with this reissue is that it sounds like it was recorded last year! Thanks to amazingly brilliant remastering, this already gorgeous "debut" album (his first in America at least at that time) takes on new life, improving (if that's possible) on Gus Dudgeon's work just a few yeas ago. Disc 2 is chock full of demos, b-sides and other assorted rarities, many heard for the first time. The disclaimer on the album says that they did the best with some of the source quality available, but you'd never even imagine there were any issues from the clarity and reproduction that just leaps out of your speakers. One can only hope more of his catalog will get this same treatment; if this album (and Tumbleweed Connection as well) turned out this good, let's keep going on the rest! A thing of beauty is a joy forever, and "Elton John" is sure to last at least that long!

Tumbleweed Connection Elton John

5 starsTumbleweed Triumph
Universal's Deluxe Editions series is, by and large, a pretty impressive one. First off, they do spectacular remastering and scour the planet for the best bonus goodies one can find. Bob Marley, Peter Frampton, Marvin Gaye and many others have been given outstanding treatments. Elton's Captain Fantastic was another stellar example and now so is Tumbleweed Connection. The liner notes may be a bit recycled, but it's the music you're after here and that doesn't disappoint. If it's possible to improve on Gus Dudgeon's remasters from a few years back, this one actually does, affording additional clarity to the already gorgeous sound. Plus, Disc 2 is full of amazing glimpses into demos, b-sides and early live versions that are tons of fun to hear, many for the first time ever. Elton fans or just fans of great 70s music, run - don't walk - to your computer and order this set - NOW! It's a real treasure!
