Black & White; Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Director's Comments; Behind The Scenes James Whale's trailblazing horror classic is loosely based on Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's ... Full Descriptiongothic novel and features Boris Karloff in the role that made him a star. Mad scientist Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) has an insane ambition to create life in his own image. Frankenstein and his hunchbacked assistant, Fritz (Dwight Frye), toil in his foreboding mountaintop laboratory using pillaged human brains and cadavers. With the terrible creation's success, Frankenstein must shield his fiancée, Elizabeth (Mae Clark), and friends from the Monster's (Boris Karloff) fiendish wrath. Will Frankenstein pay the ultimate price for playing God?FRANKENSTEIN is James Whale's first stylish, expressionist film (INVISIBLE MAN, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN) to grace the Universal horror cycle of the 1930s and 1940s (DRACULA, THE MUMMY). Scientist Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) and his hunchbacked assistant, Fritz (Dwight Frye), embark on an unholy mission by stealing a body from a graveyard and a human brain from a medical college. Unbeknownst to Frankenstein, however, Fritz takes a violent and murderous abnormal brain. Henry's strange letters about his experiments worry his fiancée, Elizabeth (Mae Clark), and friends Victor (John Boles) and Dr. Waldman (Edward Van Sloan). They arrive at Frankenstein's laboratory to find the spectacular scene of creation under way--and Frankenstein intoxicated with his own godlike power.
FRANKENSTEIN is in many ways the original horror classic, virtually creating the genre itself, leading to numerous sequels and myriad imitators. Whale's ability to give humanity to the Monster is one of the film's most stunning successes. FRANKENSTEIN is number 87 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Greatest Movies.
FRANKENSTEIN was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1991.
Bela Lugosi, star of DRACULA (1931), turned down the role of the Monster. Lugosi and Karloff later became costars in many of Universal's popular 1930s horror films. Lugosi did play the monster in FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN, opposite Lon Chaney Jr.
Boris Karloff, an Englishman, was born William Henry Pratt. Karloff was a stage name.
Certain previously censored and cut scenes, including the drowning of little Maria, were restored in 1987.
FRANKENSTEIN bears little resemblance to the novel on which it is based. Frankenstein is even given the wrong first name (in the book he is Victor Frankenstein, and his friend is Henry). More of the novel's plot is covered in the film's sequel BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN.
Frankenstein Quotes/Excerpts: "It's alive! It's alive! It's alive! It's alive!...Now I know what it feels like to be God!"--Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) after creating the Monster

$10.39 Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belicec (King Donovan), who begs him to come over and take a look at the strange mannequinlike figure that's suddenly appeared on his pool table. This exceptionally well written and directed fable, the ultimate comment on the subtly coercive conformity of the 1950s, may be Siegel's best film, and it is undoubtedly one of the most exciting science fiction films ever made.

Frankenstein review
$15.45 This is the first screen version of Bram Stoker's famous tale based on the smash hit stage production. Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi) arrives in London and immediately works to enrapture and transform into vampires young Lucy Weston (Frances Dade) and her friend Mina Seward (Helen Chandler). After he succeeds in turning Lucy, and Mina's health suddenly deteriorates, Mina's father (Herbert Bunston), calls in a specialist, Professor Abraham Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan). Van Helsing quickly recognizes Dracula's vampirism, and sets about saving Mina (and in the process, becomes Dracula's archenemy). The film, arguably the most influential of the legend's film versions, launched Lugosi's career in horror movies and forever invited vampires across Hollywood's threshold.

$15.45 A research team digging in the Amazon comes across the fossilized hand of a human fish creature. That night, the creature emerges from the swamp to kill. So begins one of the more recognizable classics of the science fiction and horror genres. Shot originally in 3-D, this has been a late-night TV hit for decades. The hand makes its way back to the oceanographic institute and soon conscientious scientist David Reed (Richard Carlson), greedy scientist Mark (Richard Cunha) and the beautiful girl they fight over, Kay (Julia Adams) are heading up the Amazon to find more fossils. Instead, of course, they run into the real thing, and terror begins. While Mark and David fight over what to do next, the creature falls in love with Kay, and makes plans of his own. Island diver Ricou Browning plays the creature in the spectacular underwater scenes, the highlight being a beautifully creepy scene of Kay going for a swim, while the smitten creature swims along below her, transfixed. The pounding, horrific score is credited to conductor Joseph Gerhsenson but was actually written by a team of composers, including Henry Mancini.
