R: Racing Evolution for PlayStation 2 is notable for featuring not one but eight distinct racing styles, including GT, rally, and drag racing. A total of 14 tracks are available to compete on, with both real-world venues and fantasy locales represented. Players can choose from a variety of licensed vehicles to participate in one of four game modes: Racing Life, Time Attack, Arcade, and Versus. Racing Life is the heart of R: Racing Evolution, allowing players to participate in a storyline that chronicles an entire career filled with rivalries and lucrative events. By performing well in each race, players will earn points that can be used to unlock power-ups, modifications, and additional cars. The racing becomes more personal with in-game radio communications from crew members along the sidelines as well as from adversaries on the track.
Strange attraction I might be pushing it a bit with the four stars. The story mode's over just as it starts getting interesting and the racing itself is a fairly tame cross between sim and arcade. But it works and there's a *lot* to do after the story mode. (Indeed, if you get into this game then you'll probably forget that there ever was a story mode.) The selection of tracks is okay and there are plenty of cars with a great variety of upgradeable stats. This game has a peculiar laid-back charm and I spent countless hours playing it. It's a steal at eleven bucks. Submitted by the other McCoy (Sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo This review is for a different format.

R: Racing Evolution DVD Ubi Soft hits the track with F1 Racing Championship, the first F1-style racing game for the PlayStation 2. There's an arcade mode for those who like it fast and furious, and a simulation mode for players who want to closely replicate what it's like to drive a Formula One car. Two players can also compete against each other in a split-screen mode.
It's no shock or surprise that EA Sports will have a handful of titles ready at launch, but one of their lesser-known titles will be making a big splash this spring - Formula One 2001. EA Sports will have already shipped NASCAR & SSX by the time this title comes out, but history teaches us that there's never been a shortage of racing games from EA & EA Sports! F1 2001 will focus (obviously) on the Formula 1 drive experience, and will feature all of the race tracks that are in the real F1 racing season - including the new F1 track at Indy.
Like most EA Sports games, there will not be a shortage of options, as F1 can be modified countless ways. On the sim.side of things, you will be able to adjust the suspension, brake balance, gear ratios, down force, ride height and other selections that can help tune your F1 ride to top performance levels. Of course, if you don't want to have such a "sim." experience, there's an arcade mode that lets you get in and compete right away. Damage effects will be noticeable and will also cause the vehicle to perform poorly, and the graphics will take full advantage of the PS2 hardware.
