Based on a novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte (THE CLUB DUMAS) and coscripted by director Roman Polanski, THE NINTH GATE was Polanski's first feature after a long break following the release of 1995's DEATH AND THE MAIDEN--in between, there was an aborted project that faltered when designated star John Travolta opted out. Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) is a cynical rare books dealer hired by Boris Balkan (Frank Langella), a scholar specializing in books on Satanism, to recover the only two remaining copies (in addition to the one owned by Balkan) of THE NINE GATES OF THE KINGDOM OF SHADOWS, a 17th-century text with cryptic illustrations supposedly contributed by Lucifer himself. Corso's investigation takes him to Europe, where he is pursued by a strange girl (Emmanuelle Seigner) who seemes to assume the role of his guardian angel: Bizarre deaths inspired by the book's morbid illustrations befall all those who come into contact with the book--except himself. This occult mystery should satisfy fans of subtly creepy, stylish tales of the supernatural along the lines of Polanski's own ROSEMARY'S BABY.

Theatrical release: March 31, 2000. Filmed on location in Paris, France; at the Château de Ferrières (near Paris); Sintra, Portugal; Toledo, Spain; and at the Sudios Epinay. José López Rodero, who plays a dual role (the shady Ceniza brothers), actually started out as the film's production manager. Polanski decided he would be perfect for the part(s) and persuaded Rodero (who had never done any professional acting before) to appear in the film. Emmanuelle Seigner is married to Roman Polanski.

Ninth Gate Reviews:

"...Engaging and well-executed....Johnny Depp excels in character roles..."-- Tim Cogshell, Box Office

"...THE NINTH GATE is well-crafted with a genteel and moody air....Polanski has concentrated on the subdued and the spooky. And he's thrown in some bizarre acting touches..."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

"...With its fiery, over-the-top spectacle and bolts of black humor, THE NINTH GATE is actually more in the spirit of VAMPIRE KILLERS than ROSEMARY'S BABY....Lena Olin is the ultimate cat woman..." -- Lloyd Sachs, Chicago Sun-Times

"...A sardonic detective thriller peppered with carefully crafted pleasures..." -- Lisa Nesselson, Variety

"...Depp's performance is a consistent delight..."-- Stephen Farber, Movieline's Hollywood Life

"...A lot of lowbrow fun....[Depp performs] with real panache..." -- 3 out of 5 stars - A Satisfying Rental -- Christopher Kelly, Premiere

"...Polanski remains a supreme technician....The film is intricately well-made....THE NINTH GATE is generously spiced with humorous detail..." -- Philip Strick, Sight and Sound

3 stars Entertaining Movie
I liked the movie. I think I would have hoped for something a little more - I don't know - evil at the end. Or perhaps a more evil tranformation of Johnny as he was becoming obsessed with the Nine Gates. Or perhaps that he would do something to fight the obsession. Not among my favorite Johnny Depp films, but I liked it.

5 stars my favorite movie
I love the look and feel of this movie. Scary without gore. You have to watch Johnny Depp, he is great, as are all the actors. Classy movie Commentary by Roman Polanski is so interesting that I've watched that a couple times too.

4 stars Depp is suspenseful and timeless
History buffs will find this interpretation of passgaes from the Bible and other related books very compelling. The books and the researcher (J.Depp) carry the plot to a surprise conclusion that is really not an ending but the beginning of another plot.(This could have been a Hitchkock film) J.Depp fans will enjoy this movie for its suspense and performance. I know why he won the Best in Male Actor for the Oscars. A fan for a long time will recognize how insightful Depp has been in his interpretation of this plot. He gets better as time goes by.His lines continue to be short with lots of picture presence from camera focus on his face and body language. (And isin't this how the famous T.Cruise gets his chrisma?) A great movie without the "Disneyness" of Pirates of the Carribean

4 stars Highly recommended
I can't offer enough positive commentary about this movie. First, let me say that Johnny Depp and Frank Langella are excellent. Whoever (whomever?) cast these guys knew what he was doing and knew what the movie demanded. In my opinion, Frank Langella is pivotal to this movie and synonymous with the essence of this film. Second, the directing has absolutely deadly finesse. Finally, while difficult to describe, the overall feel of this film is strangely gothic, haunting and macabre and renders it particularly enjoyable...again, in a strange sort of way.

After nearly two decades of successful detours into mature thrillers (THE GIFT, A SIMPLE PLAN) and superhero blockbusters (the Spider-Man series), director Sam Raimi returns--full tilt--to his scrappy horror roots with DRAG ME TO HELL. Alison Lohman stars as Christine Brown, a soft-spoken Southern girl with a good heart, a PhD-toting boyfriend (Justin Long), and a job as a loan officer at a bank just outside of Los Angeles. When evicting a vile and negligent old woman named Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) seems to be the only way to secure an important promotion, Christine pushes her moral flexibility about as far as it can go (not very far at all) only to dearly pay the price as the recipient of a rather nasty curse. The next three days of Christine’s life amount to an unimaginable endurance test in which she is subject to physical and psychological torture while a terrifying demon draws ever closer to take her to hell, where she would burn for eternity. Raimi manages to keep the feverish awfulness of DRAG ME's central concept palpable while layering on his distinctly disturbing and exhilaratingly kinetic macabre-meets-slapstick portraiture, and the result is an efficient celebration of the art of horror movies that’s campy, scary, and fun. Similar to HBO’s classic TALES FROM THE CRYPT series, HELL feels like a living, breathing EC comic. While it may come as a minor shock that Bruce Campbell, the beloved mouthpiece of the EVIL DEAD franchise, is nowhere to be found in this unabashed horror-comedy, Christine is an excellent twist on Raimi's genre-hero archetype. Fans will get a kick out of seeing her inexplicably leave her gob agape as putrid projectiles pour in, and hearing her, after a bit of pushing, spout a Campbell-ism or two ("I’m gonna get me some!"). Legendary cult-sleaze director Joe D'Amato helms the "nunsploitation" film IMAGES IN A CONVENT (IMMAGINI DI UN CONVENTO). Packed with copious sex and nudity, the film tells the story of a secluded convent where a diabolic statue possesses the nuns, causing them to blaspheme and commit sexual depravities. When a group of priests intervenes to try and exorcise the nuns, the presence of the men at the convent drives them to even more perverted acts. Like a more explicit and exploitative version of Ken Russell's THE DEVILS, IMAGES IN A CONVENT has been called the most disturbing entry in the "nunsploitation" subgenre. Joe D'Amato delivers what is perhaps one of the most explicit nunsploitation flicks ever made. As nuns get possessed by the devil, the situation only worsens when well-meaning priessts try to intervene.

The cult television series that inspired THE X-FILES, KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER was not nearly as successful as that later show yet still maintains an influence. The show, which ran from 1974 to '75 follows the creepy adventures of Carl Kolchak, a scruffy, cynical reporter played by Darren McGavin. When Kolchak finds that the murderer responsible for a series of bloody murders plaguing his home city of Las Vegas is a member of the undead, a vampire out for food, he undertakes a quest to defeat the bloodsucking fiend. Gritty, dark, and dramatic, KOLCHAK was described by many critics as too scary for television. This classic original 20-episode series from 1974-75 star Darren McGavin with guest stars Scatman Crothers, Dick Van Patten, Jamie Farr, Jim Backus, and more. The episodes have been digitally restored for maximum clarity.

A team of ecology students led by a famous environmental advocate learn that some secrets are better left buried when they unearth the perfectly preserved remains of a frozen wooly mammoth and discover that an ancient parasite has been incubating inside the beast for centuries. Dr. David Krupien (Val Kilmer) is examining a melting ice cap in the Arctic when he unearths a prehistoric specimen the likes of which researchers have never seen. Elated by the possibilities of such a remarkable find, Dr. Krupien hastily summons four of his brightest students to the base to take part in the excavation. But something isn't right--soon after extracting the massive prehistoric creature from the ice, the students are besieged by a swarm of unidentified insects that burrow deep into the flesh and lay eggs in their host to reproduce. With each new infection, the prospect of containing the parasitic bane decreases. Now, stranded in the Arctic with their numbers quickly dwindling, the desperate students realize that their only hope of preventing the parasite from reaching the general population is to quarantine the base, even if it costs them their lives.
