PLENTY is an exploration of post World War II European society and its discontents, as symbolized by the shifting emotional and political alliances of one English woman. For Susan Traherne (Meryl Streep), nothing can match the heroism and excitement of her wartime involvement with the French Resistance; nor can any man match the young soldier with whom she had an affair. Back in England, her youthful optimism slowly fades as she experiments with a variety of political movements and a variety of men. Tracey Ullman costars as Susan's constant companion, who lives life as a bohemian free spirit, uninhibited, but unable to stop Susan's decline into depression and unabashed alienation. Ultimately, Susan settles into a marriage with an upper class diplomat that leads to disillusionment and, finally, madness. Meryl Streep gives an astonishing performance as the fiercely independent and emotionally overwrought woman, with command performances from a remarkable ensemble cast including: John Geilgud, Tracey Ullman, Sam Neill, and Sting. The film is based on the critically acclaimed play by David Hare. Plenty Reviews: "...An ambitious study in behaviour..."
-- Gavin Millar, Sight and Sound "...An absorbing and fastidiously made adaptation of David Hare's acclaimed play..."
-- Cart., Variety "...What builds beneath this quiet exterior, shot through with dark wit, is a haunting examination of the price romantic idealism can exact....Meryl Streep gives the most beautifully modulated performance of her career..."
-- Sheila Benson, Los Angeles Times "...Post-war Britain crumbles, and so does Meryl Streep's Susan Traherne character in PLENTY. A great performance in a brilliantly acted movie..."

$9.69 In Douglas Sirk's emotionally and visually extravagant final film IMITATION OF LIFE, a life's work of subverted melodrama and razor-sharp social commentary are brought to a resounding and baroque climax. In a role that closely resembles and perhaps parodies her own life, Lana Turner plays Lora Meredith, an aspiring actress and single mother who meets Annie Johnson (Juanita Moore), a black and similarly single and struggling mother. When they move in together, Annie assumes the role of domestic servant and the two women struggle together to raise their two daughters. Annie's daughter, Sarah Jane (Susan Kohner), favors her father whose skin tone resembles her own extremely light skin, and she slowly comes to resent ...

$9.69 In what is widely considered to be even better than the Broadway stage musical, this film version of HAIR, directed by Milos Forman, gives a boost to what was, on the stage, a nonexistent plotline, and highlights the already fabulous score with this epic musical. Filmed on location in and around New York City, the main plotline follows Claude (John Savage) a farm boy turned draftee from Oklahoma on his way to Vietnam. In New York, he is adopted by a group of flower children, led by Berger (Treat Williams) and including Jeannie (Annie Golden), who take him on a series of counter-cultural adventures that introduce Claude to hallucinogens and to a flaky but loveable debutante ...

$9.85 Clyde Williams (Sidney Poitier) and Billy Foster (Bill Cosby) belong to a community group called The Sons and Daughters of Shaka. The city of Atlanta has plans to take away the group's meeting place, and The Sons and Daughters of Shaka don't have the money to finance a new one. Clyde and Billy come up with a hair-brained scheme to raise money for a new lodge hall by fixing a boxing match. Their plan is to hypnotize a weakling boxer and make him think he's unbeatable. Then they'll place bets on his "sure-win" fights. Their idea is so crazy that it just might work. But if anyone finds out what they're up to, there will be hell to pay.

$7.89 CHASING LIBERTY: Pop songstress Mandy Moore (A WALK TO REMEMBER) makes another big-screen splash with CHASING LIBERTY, a charming romantic comedy. Moore is Anna Foster (a.k.a. Liberty), daughter of the President of the United States, James Foster (Mark Harmon). Fed up with the overprotective secret service men that follow her around every second, Anna finally decides to cut loose. While on vacation in Europe she goes to a live performance of the hip-hop band The Roots and then escapes on a motorcycle with a cute photographer, Ben Calder (Matthew Goode). But what she doesn't realize is that Ben is actually a secret service agent himself who is under strict orders to act like a regular guy in order to provide the illusion that Anna is on her own for the first time in her life. As the pair journeys from Prague to Venice to the Love Parade festival in Berlin, Anna finds herself falling in love with Ben. At the same time, the agents on her trail (Jeremy Piven and Annabella Sciorra) find the same thing happening to them. Though the well-intentioned Ben does his best to keep Anna at a polite distance without crossing any romantic lines, it eventually becomes clear that he too is falling for her, complicating the situation. With CHASING LIBERTY, Moore once again proves her undeniably charismatic screen presence.
WHAT A GIRL WANTS: Teenager Daphne Reynolds (Amanda Bynes) dreams of one day dancing with her father at her wedding. Her dream is complicated by the fact that she has never met her dad, Lord Henry Dashwood (Colin Firth), a British politician to whom her mother, singer Libby (Kelly Preston), was married 17 years prior. Unfortunately, Henry's aristocratic family did not approve of bohemian Libby and drove her away. Determined to find her father, who has no idea that she exists, Daphne leaves her New York City home and runs off to London, where, much to the dismay of Henry's conniving fiancée (Anna Chancellor) and her jealous daughter (Christina Cole), she soon becomes a part of daily ...
