Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Soundtrack Spanish; English Subtitles Based on Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize winning novel of 1951.The Caine is a battle-scarred Navy vessel under the command of Captain Queeg, who rules with an iron fist. But Queeg is a man who suffers from an acute case of insecurity and stress, which causes serious mental problems and faulty leadership that his underlings are beginning to notice. The situation comes to a head during a fierce storm, in which Lt. Steve Maryk relieves Queeg of his duties against Queeg's will in order to save the ship and the men. Undaunted, Queeg charges Maryk with mutiny. Thus begins a dramatic court martial, which strongly affects Queeg's state of mind and his future. In director Edward Dmytryk's classic seafaring drama, privileged mama's boy Ensign Keith (Robert Francis) gets assigned to the Caine, a rusty old minesweeper with a haggard, undisciplined crew during the latter days of WWII. Soon the paranoid, strawberry-loving Captain Queeg (Humprey Bogart) takes charge and tries to clean up the ship, arousing the hatred and suspicion of the other officers, especially a flippant lieutenant (Fred MacMurray). Eventually the men stage a mutiny, and a subsequent trial ensues, at which point a sharply intelligent military lawyer (José Ferrer) takes up the matter.
Dmytryk's fast-moving, intelligent adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Herman Wouk novel features breathtaking outdoor scenes on actual naval vessels. Bogart's performance as Queeg is one of cinema's greats; a true departure from his usual tough guys, he captures his character's confused vulnerability with astounding finesse. Ferrer is also sensational as the lawyer. A solid crew rounding out the cast--Lee Marvin, Van Johnson, E.G. Marshall, and Claude Akins--helps make this one definitely see-worthy.
Theatrical release: June 24, 1954.
Filmed on location at Naval Station Treasure Island, San Francisco, and Yosemite National Park.
Humphrey Bogart's performance as Captain Queeg is particularly memorable for his quirks--the character is obsessed with strawberries and constantly rolls ball bearings in his hand.
Richard Widmark was originally considered for the role of Queeg.
THE CAINE MUTINY features the debuts of Robert Francis and May Wynn.
This is the only May Wynn video. Caine Mutiny Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Is it really mutiny? As a veteran officer nearing retirement, LT. Commander Francis Queeg is given the chance to finish his Naval career as a senior officer if he can salvage the misguided crew of a worn out mine-sweeper in the final months of WWII. The rust bucket that is the USS Caine is a WWI vessel that's been commanded by a drunk for the last two years. The crew has grown dis-illusioned, and the ship is falling apart. LT. Commander Queeg, as the new Captain, tries to turn the ship and it's compliment astern by invoking harsh Naval regulations that haven't been enforced in a hundred years. Queeg however, is worn out too. He seems to suffer from a paranoia that grows as fast as he grip on reality adjourns. When Queeg finally snaps and demands a body cavity search to find an imaginary key so he can solve the puzzle of the missing starwberries from the galley, his authority plummets. Then, during a typhoon, Queeg appears unable to give logical commands and clearly endangers the ship and the lives of the men. The Executive Officer orders Queeg's arrest and has him confined to his cabin. The ship survives, and the Navy convenes a courts-martial to determine if the mutinous officers are guilty of "Mutiny" - a capital offense. The courts-martial scene is spell-binding as all the prosecution witnesses find legitimite reasons to support the Captain. It should be said that this was World War II. Hitler was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons that he was clearly not afraid to use, and was presiding over geno-cide. Even though Queeg's orders seemed unhinged, the orders were not his; he gave the orders he was ordered to give. Perhaps to uncover a spy. Junior officers do not have the right to demand the Captain explain himself. His well meaning subordinates had made a horrific mistake. Defense attorney Barney Greenwald sees only one way to save his clients from the rope: convince the panel that Queeg was in fact insane, and his clients had to relieve him. So Queeg takes the stand. A well thought out strategy by Capt. Greenwald sees the Captain decompensate, and quickly regress to childish responses as his basic paranoia betrays him. The men are off the hook; but that's not all. A **celebration** ensues at the officers club where the officers of the Caine regal in their Captain's humiliation. Finally, the defense attorney Greenwald joins in the **festivities** and tells the party goers that it was their disloyalty that brought the whole matter on. He recalls the funny stories they told, the jokes they made about him, and the little songs they sang in toast of his paranoia. But there's one peice of the puzzle missing: Queeg was sick and couldn't help himself, and his officers ignored his pleas for asisstance, choosing instead to let him flounder. But why? Why? What really happened? There was one officer who knew why, and what really happened. Only at the end do we find out who, and why. Devastating. One of the greatest scenes ever! The ending of the movie, with the Court Martial and the scenes of the celebration ever, are some of the greatest acting you will ever see. Submitted by golferpt (Motor City, U.S.A) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$10.29 It is the late 1950s, but it might as well be the late 1850s in a small French town where everyone behaves as they should (supposedly), and attends church regularly. When a strong North wind blows through town, it brings the vivacious and mysterious Vianne (Juliette Binoche) and her young daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol). Vianne is soon the talk of the town: an unwed mother who declines to go to church and opens up a chocolate shop in the midst of Lent. Her good-natured, honorable personality and psychic ability (she can predict what kind of sweets best suit each person, and magically cures each of them of their particular maladies) make her as irresistible as her delectable treats. However, Vianne and her daughter are resented by the conservative mayor, the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), and by the pious Caroline (Carrie-Anne Moss), who has disowned her own spirited mother (Judi Dench, who plays Vianne's landlady), refusing the elderly woman access to her beloved grandson. This touching fairy tale, based on the novel by Joanne Harris, was filmed on ...
