"Tombstone" was written by "Glory" screenwriter Kevin Jarre, who was originally slated to direct. George Pan Cosmatos ("Rambo: First Blood, Part II") replaced him.
Kevin Costner was still working on his version of the Wyatt Earp story for Warner Bros. (directed by Lawrence Kasdan) when "Tombstone" was released December 25, 1993.
Jarre told reporters that Costner's film was initially slated to "crush my picture." Jarre was afraid his picture wouldn't get made but a William Morris agent got Russell to star in the film (even if Russell was a client of the Creative Artists Agency); after that, the rest of the cast quckly fell into place.
Budget estimate $25 million.
Filmed in location in Tucson, Arizona, in Technicolor and Panavision.
Rated MPAA R, running time 127 minutes.
Rated BBFC 15 by the British Board of Film Classification.
Tombstone Reviews:
"...TOMBSTONE is replete with traditional Western pleasures: lusciously photographed sunsets, rugged landscapes, consistently witty dialogue...and a gallery of finely-realised heroes and villains..."
-- Tom Tunney, Sight and Sound
"...Russell's clear, steady portrayal of Wyatt Earp gives the film a core of emotional integrity..."
-- Stephen Holden, New York Times
"...The leanest, meanest Earp movie yet....Sprawling, chaotic [climax]..."
-- Michael Sauter, Entertainment Weekly
"As a fey, tubercular Doc Holliday, Val Kilmer is especially impressive, giving a just-shy-of-over-the-top performance that might have prompted Johnny Depp to take notes."-- Keith Phipps, A.V. Club
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "A rousing western in the spirit of THE WILD BUNCH....Kilmer gives a career performance as Holliday..."Premiere
Magnificent The casting director hit the "nail on the head" when she cast Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer and Dana Delaney in this epic Wyatt Earp western. If the real characters were anything like this portrayal, beam me over to this time period Scotty ! A must have for your DVD library. Haha. I've seen it a thousand times My friend showed me this movie about a year ago and I was fascinated by it! I had to find it. It took me a while to buy it on DVD and I finally bought it this past January. I've watched 52 times since! I have internet biographies on the real people in the film, mainly Doc Holliday and Johnny Ringo. Hence my e-mail address...you get the picture. This is an ensemble movie, the only one I've ever seen that has kept me on the edge of my seat, glued to the tube. I can now also quote much of the book of Revelations in Spanish. I also am taking a Latin course, even though I already now what they are saying in the Latin Duel scene. This is the best movie. Show it to your pre-teens even if its rated R. The historical representation of this film is almost dead accurate and they'll want to learn more. Get 'em into history. No movie comes close. Mandatory Western! If you absolutely love westerns this is the film you must see! Russel and Kilmer are explosive and the story lines are riveting. Maybe I need to get a life because I watch this film in its entirety everytime it is featured on cable. I am totally captivated by this film and it definetly adds depth to the genre.
