Alexandre Dumas' THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO follows the adventures of Edmond Dantès (Gérard Depardieu), a 19th-century French version of James Bond or Batman, a rich, ruthless, and suave purveyor of homemade justice. This French production goes all out, having the destinction of being the first filmed version of the newly restored unabridged version of Dumas' classic, which runs about 800 pages. The movie was filmed all over Europe, has a cast of thousands where even the extras are big names, and, with an original running time of more than six hours, doesn't leave out any detail from the celebrated novel.

good movie, but a poor adaptation i decided to purchase this movie because i read it was most like the novel. a later american version omitted several villians and a heroine. While most of the story line is accurate (some parts changed in order to allow cinematic flow) they have caused a fatal error.
Every scholar, teacher, and student, could tell you that the idea of the story is that edmond is immune to feeling because he has been forced to numb his feeling in order to survive. He is not jolly or nice. He is cruel, but only because he beleived in a cruel GOD and Judge. It is only later in the novel that he converts his beleives and his heart.
This adaptation has not only changed the story line, it has altered the entire character of Edmond Dantes. He has been changed from mysterious to laughable. This adaptation is kin to The revised Scarlet Letter starring Winona Rider. It no longer embodies the original work.
I must now continue the search for a good screen version of the novel

Dumas would have loved it ...
The acting, visuals and music were all top notch. Finally 'The Count' has been done justice. (The only drawback is that I don't speak French. However, the subtitles were easy to read.) Submitted by a reviewer (Fort Myers, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
AN EXCELLENT VERSION This is a good version of Dumas' classic. however the story is changed. Dantes' serving of meticulousy designed Mosaic justice is diluted in the case of Villefort and he is re-uiniting him with Mercedes in the ending instead of Haydee. This doesn't mar my enjoyment, but the most literally faithdul and best acted version was filmed by a British TV franchise in the 1970's, (Commercial I believe, probably Granada or Lew Grade productions and starred Alan Badel as Edmond , And Philip Madoc as Fernand; it was serialised and running to thirteen and to fourteen hours, I've never been able to find it in over a decade of searching, if anyone does, please leave details in a review) Submitted by w.plews3 (Stockton-on-Tees, England.) Wonderful! The movie followed the novel very closely. I loved it! However, it is in French with English subtitles, so viewers should be aware of this fact. Submitted by a reviewer (Michigan, USA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo This review is for a different format.
