Standard Screen; Additional Footage; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles; Director's Comments The Seattle music scene is the ideal backdrop for Cameron Crowe's (SAY ANYTHING, JERRY MAGUIRE) chronicle of the lives of single twentysomethings in the 1990s. Linda (Kyra Sedgwick) and Steve (Campbell Scott) are both tired of the singles scene and meeting the wrong people. Just when they are each ready to give up and give in to being alone, they meet each other and begin the delicate process of dating. Steve's apartment complex is also home to his ex-girlfriend, Janet (Bridget Fonda), and Cliff (Matt Dillon), the lead singer of a rock band. Janet imagines that Cliff is her boyfriend while Cliff considers her one of a few casual acquaintances. Debbie (Sheila Kelley), who also lives in the complex, resorts to video dating in her attempt to meet men with humorous but disastrous results. Crowe's script captures the nuances of relationships and romance (as he did with teen love in 1989's SAY ANYTHING) and follows the rocky roads that relationships can take. Music is the other main character here, with live performances from Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, cameos by the members of Pearl Jam, and a soundtrack that also includes titles by Paul Westerberg and Mudhoney. The Seattle music scene is the backdrop for this tale of single twentysomethings trying to find themselves and each other in the 1990s. Linda (Kyra Sedgwick) and Steve (Campbell Scott) meet in a club and begin to play the dating game. Janet (Bridget Fonda) has a thing for Cliff (Matt Dillon), who barely acknowledges her existence. Cameron Crowe's (SAY ANYTHING, JERRY MAGUIRE) script tackles the ups and downs of romance with humor and honesty. Highlights include live performances by Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, as well as cameos by the members of Pearl Jam. Theatrical release date: September 1992.
Cameron Crowe is married to Nancy Wilson, of the rock group Heart.
Cameron Crowe says of SINGLES: "It's about the lengths people go to to make a connection with another person, the good advice and bad advice they get along the way."
Writer-director-producer James L. Brooks, Cameron Crowe's mentor and the executive producer of his directorial debut, SAY ANYTHING (1989), says of him: "There are only a handful of people who have a distinctive voice. Cameron has that voice. He really does see the world in a certain way. If he doesn't do a movie, no one else will."
There are several cameos in the film, including appearances by members of Pearl Jam (who play Matt Dillon's bandmates in the fictional group Citizen Dick) before they achieved MTV superstardom. Other cameos include: live performances by Soundgarden and Alice in Chains; Cameron Crowe as a rock journalist interviewing the band; director Tim Burton as an aspiring filmmaker who works for a video-dating service; Pat DiNizio, lead singer of the Smithereens; and basketball star Xavier McDaniel as himself.
Citizen Dick (Matt Dillon and the members of Pearl Jam) performs the song "Touch Me I'm Dick," which is really just the Mudhoney song "Touch Me I'm Sick" with a few lyrical alterations.
Paul Westerberg, who wrote and performed the theme song "Dyslexic Heart" for the film's soundtrack, was formerly a member of the seminal rock band the Replacements. That group disbanded in 1990; the SINGLES soundtrack is Westerberg's first solo project.
"Don't do this to me; don't make me remember this chili dog forever!"--Linda Powell (Kyra Sedgwick) to Steve Dunne (Campbell Scott) after he proposes marriage to her over lunch.
"I'm tired of all the games."--Linda Powell (Kyra Sedgwick), regarding relationships.
"Being alone--there's a certain dignity to it."--Janet Livermore (Bridget Fonda)
"Does everyone go through this?" "No I think just us..."--exchange between Cliff Poncier (Matt Dillon) and Janet Livermore (Bridget Fonda)
Singles Reviews: "...A sweetly exuberant romantic comedy..."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "...Crowe and his personable cast make their vulnerability vivid and engaging....[The] film has a relaxed, rambling structure and the hip, ironic tone to complement Seattle' boho atmosphere..."
-- Tom Charity, Sight and Sound "...Buoyant, utterly charming....Hip, humorous, vastly likable characters..."-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...SINGLES is singularly sweet. It's a companionable movie about companionship....Crowe's affection for his actors is part of the package too, and they respond with the kind of winning ensemble work that turns every scene into a spirited jamboree..."
-- Peter Rainer, Los Angeles Times "...It's easy to like these characters, and care about them..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

A fair effort by Cameron Crow 'Singles' is quite a movie that shows you the troubles and triumphs of love, dating and music of the 1990's. This movie is a fair effort by Cameron Crowe. The plot lacks and shrivles in some areas but overall, it can be good viewing.
The highlights of 'Singles' are the cameos by Alice in Chains giving a stellar performance of 'It Ain't Like That' and 'Would?', Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament proving they can act, Chris Cornell's hilarious car scene and Soundgarden's amazing 'Birth Ritual' perfomance.
Another great aspect of the movie is the awesome quotes.
So, if you're craving a little bit of music, love and 90's grungy's, 'Singles' is the solution. Submitted by Chrissy (Woodinville, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Singles CD (1992) Original Soundtrack
Singles review
$6.75 The romantic comedy Singles, in part a homage to director Cameron Crowe's hometown of Seattle, was released at exactly the right time (summer 1992). Nirvana's Nevermind had symbolically knocked Michael Jackson off the top of the album charts at the beginning of the year, and the underground buzz about Seattle bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam was beginning to find its way past circles of indie aficionados and open-minded hard rock fans and into the mainstream. Singles helped crystallize the idea of the "Seattle scene" in the mainstream public's mind, and it was also one of the first big-selling '90s movie soundtracks (it went platinum and reached the Top Ten) to feature largely new work from contemporary artists. The soundtrack's strength was the way it was so firmly rooted in place -- where future soundtrack extravaganzas simply contrived to gather as many big-name acts as possible, Singles focused specifically on Seattle-area music (quite logically, given the film's plot and setting), which gave the album the feel of a cohesive document. It didn't hurt that nearly all the bands involved contributed high-quality material -- although Nirvana is absent, scene stalwarts Soundgarden, their lead singer Chris Cornell (the haunting acoustic ballad "Seasons"), Alice in Chains ("Would?," which showed up on their subsequent album, Dirt), Mudhoney, Pearl Jam (two tracks), and Screaming Trees all weigh in with strong new cuts, as well as stylistic compatriots Smashing Pumpkins (Chicago) and Minneapolis alt-rock god Paul Westerberg (his first two charmingly playful solo songs). The vaults are mined for chestnuts by Mother Love Bone (the epic "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns," perhaps their strongest moment) and Seattle native Jimi Hendrix (the shimmering "May This Be Love," which fits the mood of the album perfectly), and Seattle sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, leaders of Heart, appear as the Lovemongers on a stellar acoustic cover of Led Zeppelin's "The Battle

| | Pennywise Land Of The Free? CD (2001)
Singles movie DVD
$9.65 Pennywise themselves are calling Land of the Free "a wake-up call," aimed at the slumbering masses of America -- an attempt to shake people out of their lethargy, and prod them into thinking about the world. It's also a clarion call to action, made most forcibly on "Fuck Authority," via its demand that "it's time we had our say." However, given the opportunity, Pennywise isn't quite sure what it is they want to say. The songs throw out concerns and reactions, opinions and questions, ideas and concepts, unleashing their own mixed emotions along the way. The quartet's frustration with the current state of affairs singes the tracks, yet solutions and causes by and large evade them. At times it's evident the group feels like they're calling to the deaf while stumbling blindly around in the dark. "Is there anyone listening?" they inquire at one point, half in plea, half in defiance. Pennywise is high enough up in the punk hierarchy to know the answer is yes. Wrapping their message in a barrage of melodies and pummeling beats insures that at every show hundreds of kids will parrot back Land's lyrics, fists punching the air. But will these fans seriously ask themselves the same questions the band are posing? The group hopes so, for the album is obviously meant as a starting point for discussion, raising issues, and consciousness, in hopes of encouraging an eventual grassroots revolution. It's the beginnings of a manifesto, delivering up discussion points for the interested to mull over, then respond with their own ideas via the band's website. From these beginnings Pennywise is determined to forge a plan of action for the future, one that everyone can make their own. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
In their seventh studio release Land Of The Free, Pennywise have turned their attention toward the issues of global politics, drawing inspiration from the worldwide WTO protests and the recent United States Presidential elections as fuel for their anti-establishment position. 10 tracks. 200

| | Psycho DVD (1960) Widescreen; Collector's Edition; Dubbed; Subtitled
Singles film
$15.25 Credited with inventing the genre of the modern horror film, PSYCHO has had its share of sequels and imitators, none of which diminishes the achievement of this shocking and complex horror thriller. Alfred Hitchcock's choreography of elements in PSYCHO is considered so perfect it inspired a shot-by-shot remake by Gus Van Zant in 1998. However, Hitchcock's black-and-white original, featuring Anthony Perkins's haunting characterization of lonely motel keeper Norman Bates, has never been equaled. Bates presides over an out-of-the-way motel under the domineering specter of his mother. The young, well-intentioned Bates is introduced to the audience when Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a blonde on the run with stolen money, checks in for the night. But Momma doesn't like loose women, so the stage is set for this classic tale of horror--and one of the most famous scenes in film history. PSYCHO was initially received by audiences with shock and amazement--and it still terrifies today. Though it is now considered prototypical Hitchcock, its setting, pace, and emphasis on terror were major departures for the director at the time, coming after the more classically grand NORTH BY NORTHWEST.

| | Wild Wild West - The Second Season DVDs (1966)
Singles movie DVD
$31.29 While following in the tradition of conventional Westerns like GUNSMOKE or HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL, the innovative 1960s television series THE WILD WILD WEST tweaked the genre by infusing science-fiction elements and James Bond-like espionage plotlines. As dashingly handsome secret agent James T. West (Robert Conrad) and his master-of-disguise sidekick, Artemus Gordon (Ross Martin), investigated crimes in the late-1800s Wild West, the series distinguished itself with anachronistically high-tech gadgetry (a pioneering style that would later be come to known as "steampunk") and an odd assemblage of villains that included the delightfully demented dwarf, Miguelito Loveless (Michael Dunn). Eccentric and visionary, the series is resurrected in this collection of remastered episodes from the second season.
