Closed Captioned; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re Annie Wilson (Cate Blanchett) is a young widow living in Brixton, Georgia, who does psychic readings. She has a power that allows her to see things her neighbors don't see, and she talks about the things that they try to keep quiet. She eventually stirs up trouble by advising Valerie Barksdale (Hilary Swank) to leave her abusive husband, Donnie (an effectively menacing Keanu Reeves). Donnie chases after Annie and threatens her and her young sons. Then Jessica King (Katie Holmes), a sexually liberated rich girl, disappears, and Annie has visions of a gruesome murder that endanger her own life. THE GIFT is an unusual supernatural thriller. Director Sam Raimi (A SIMPLE PLAN) and DP Jamie Anderson use the huge gnarled trees and foggy swamps of Savannah to create a palpable sense of dread, and Raimi really knows how to jolt an audience. The script, by Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE) and Tom Epperson, has enough twists to keep the audience guessing. Blanchett is very believable, and Giovanni Ribisi gives a heart-wrenching performance as Buddy Cole, a disturbed young man who seeks Annie's counsel. Their relationship gives the film an emotional weight that makes it more than just a good thriller. Theatrical release: January 19, 2001.
The film was shot on location in Savannah, Springfield, and Thunderbolt, Georgia.
The character of Annie Wilson is loosely based on screenwriter Thornton's own mother.
Cate Blanchett visited five psychics as research for the role.
Executive producer Rob Tapert got his start producing Raimi's first film, THE EVIL DEAD (1982). He is also an executive producer, with Raimi, of the popular syndicated TV series, XENA, WARRIOR PRINCESS, and is married to the show's star, actress Lucy Lawless.
Actor Gary Cole (David Duncan) also starred on the TV series AMERICAN GOTHIC, which was executive produced by Raimi.
Editor Bob Murawski began his film career as an assistant editor on Raimi's DARKMAN (1990).
A stunt double was used in the scene where Jessica King's body is pulled from the water. Gift Quotes/Excerpts: "What's the matter? You see somethin' bad?"--the doomed Jessica King (Katie Holmes) skeptically questions a stricken Annie (Cate Blanchett) about her vision. Gift Reviews: "...Reeves brings off a dashing piece of physical sleight-of-hand....[The] film is elegant, solidly played and frequently gripping..."-- Xan Brooks, Sight and Sound "...The movie is ingenious in its plotting, colorful in its characters, taut in its direction and fortunate in possessing Cate Blanchett..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "...[A] deeply spooky gothic shocker..."
-- Bruce Fretts, Entertainment Weekly "...[Like A SIMPLE PLAN, director Sam Raimi's film is] an absorbing portrayal of a serious crime committed in a small town..."

$6.99 As in his 1977 film THE LATE SHOW, Robert Benton focuses on a private detective who's playing the back nine. With the passing of a quarter century, however, the director's tone had grown more somber. Paul Newman stars as the detective, Harry Ross, living in semiretirement in Santa Monica on the estate owned by his movie-star friends, Jack (Gene Hackman) and Catherine Ames (Susan Sarandon). When Harry delivers a package as a favor to Jack, he finds fellow private dick Lester Ivar (M. Emmett Walsh) dying from a bullet wound. Harry checks out Ivar's apartment, where ...

$6.55 Nicolas Cage stars as Jack Campbell, a career-driven workaholic who has everything: an exciting job, a Ferarri, a closetful of Zegna suits, and the attention of any woman he wants. His life changes when, after working a full day on Christmas Eve, he intervenes in a convenience store holdup. The apparent criminal, Cash (Cheadle), speaks to Jack in epigrams about his satisfaction with life. When Jack wakes up the next day, he's suddenly living in a New Jersey suburb, where he's married to his college sweetheart (Leoni) and is the father of two children. At first he is aghast, but Jack soon warms to his new life even though he knows that it cannot last. Unabashedly sentimental, the film is also a great comedy, as Cage gives a superb performance that makes the most of his character's obvious disgust with his suburban surroundings and even allows for a few moments of hysterics reminiscent of VAMPIRE'S KISS. Filled with great performances (notably ...

Gift movie DVD
$12.05 Loosely inspired by the time-honored Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse.
Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, ...

$10.45 The acclaimed New Zealand director Jane Campion (THE PIANO) turns her unusual artistic eye toward the urban erotic thriller genre. Based on the novel by Susanna Moore, IN THE CUT tells the story of Frannie (Meg Ryan) an English teacher living in Manhattan's East Village who finds herself mixed up in a homicide investigation after a severed head turns up in her garden. Jennifer Jason Leigh is her sexually unhinged half-sister and Mark Ruffalo plays a homicide detective who falls into bed with Frannie after she's attacked on the Lower East Side. Suspects include her stalker ex-lover (Kevin Bacon) and a troubled student (Sharrieff Pugh) who's obsessed with serial killer John Wayne Gacy. As the body count rises however, Frannie realizes that the prime suspect just may be the very cop in her bed.
If this all sounds like a by-the-numbers sex crime thriller don't worry; Campion twists the genre towards her own ends, adding multi-layered focus, deeply saturated colors, a dream-like mood and copious amounts of feminist allegorical symbolism. Meg Ryan ...
