In this marvelous thriller starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, Hepburn returns to Paris from vacation to discover her husband murdered. Three men who attend ... Full Descriptionthe funeral begin stalking Hepburn, demanding to know the whereabouts of $250,000 stolen by her husband and the menacing trio years before. Protected only by a U.S. embassy man and the suave Grant, Hepburn must find the money before she is killed too. But can she really trust Grant, whose story and name change every day? Filled with twists and delectable chemistry between Grant and Hepburn, CHARADE delivers both passion and suspense as well as a sly sense of humor. Lovely Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) is determined to divorce her wealthy, cold, and closed-mouthed husband, but someone throws him from a train before she gets the chance. Left penniless in Paris with police suspicion resting heavily upon her, Reggie soon realizes she's in serious trouble--her husband stole money from three unscrupulous men, and they want the money back. Charming and amusing Cary Grant, recalling his screwball comedy days while still remaining manly, comes to Reggie's aid. But he too has secrets and hidden loyalties. With the bodies piling up and the money nowhere to be found, Grant and Hepburn dash through Paris toward the startling solution.
Agatha Christie-like in its unexpected twists and colorful characters and shimmering with fun and passion, CHARADE is a suspense gem that deserves to be much better known than it is. The supporting cast, led by Walter Matthau, James Coburn, and George Kennedy, is terrific, the interaction between Hepburn and Grant is an absolute joy, and Stanley Donen's playful direction all combine to make this film a small classic. Based on the story "The Unsuspecting Wife" by Marc Behm and Peter Stone. Marc Behm's EYE OF THE BEHOLDER was made into a film in 1999. Charade Quotes/Excerpts: "It is infuriating that your unhappiness does not turn to fat."--Sylvie Gaudel (Dominique Minot) to Reggie Lampert Vass (Audrey Hepburn)

Charade Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) A Classic later Cary Grant film This is a fine Cary Grant film, and Audrey Hepburn is a plus! It is also fun to see Walter Matthau, George Kennedy and James Coburn in early roles. Also included on the disk is a bonus film by James and Pamela Mason also called Charade, that is a full 90 minutes and is 3 short stories that they put together, a nice bonus from a pair of fine actors. A chic and mod Paris adventure! Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn are both so otherworldly that it would take a movie like this to display their unique magic. From the fab opening credits with 60s abstract art and a great melody by Mancini to the clothes by Givenchy and the clever script, this is a winner. Grant is dashing and debonair, Hepburn lovely and even more dazzling than you would expect. An adventure to live again and again. Romance en Paris?!?! BEAUTIFUL. One of Hepburns Best This is truly one of my favorite Hepburn movies. Breakfast at Tiffiny's ranks up there for me, and this is like Breakfast at Tiffiny's with a real plot. Speaking of the plot, it would have been a good movie no matter who the cast in it (not as good mind you, but good). It comes complete with intrigue, romance, and a few well designed plot twists. I'm surprised they haven't redone it yet like the Thomas Crown Affair. Anyway, topnotch movie with a topnotch cast including Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Walter Matthau, James Corburn, and a few others you might recognize by face but probably not by name. Great an all time classic Absolutely great and funny and a must for every collector Submitted by luzi.zappa (Switzerland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Hepburn at her best Ths movie is one of a handful of our all-time favorites because it is a well written and plausable story that does not rely on excessive violence or high tech special effects for appeal. It has romance without sex, action without gore, believable suspense, a relistic plot and a satisfying conclusion. The 'mystery' is well maintained throughout the story. It is not overburdened with more characters or events than are needed to tell the story, which keeps it focused.
That's why it has endured as a "classic." Submitted by acts (Kiretland, Ohio, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
