Standard Screen; Additional Footage; English Subtitles An epic tale of one of the greatest rulers of India, ASOKA is a testament to the redemptive power of love. Asoka inherited India's throne in third century B.C. The Indian dynasty was poised to conquer the entire peninsula and the king began his reign by leading the charge. However, the emperor found greater meaning in the love of two women and was soon transformed, renouncing warfare and adopting the principles of the Buddha. This 2001 Indian biopic of the peaceful leader is a work of great political and dramatic significance. Asoka Reviews: "...The cast is exemplary. Bollywood heart-throb Shah Rukh Khan is excellent....Enthralling..."
-- Rachel Dwyer, Sight and Sound "...A sprawling widescreen historical epic laced with Bollywood musical numbers, melodramatic romance, spectacular locations and violent battle scenes....Khan cuts a dashing figure as a soulful hunk..."

Asoka Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Best of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor's performances, along with an excellently written script, make Asoka the best Bollywood movie I've ever seen. The drama; music; choreography; and pagentry of this film, plus it's surprise climax, will pull at your heart strings like a master puppeteer.
This majestic epic is a must-see, especially for those unfamiliar with bollywood films. Submitted by natasha.small (Bowie, Maryland USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Waste of time! This is just another cheap entertainment from India which does not intend to define/redefine or depict the history of the times of Asoka nor does it contribute a bit to the Art of Cinema. total waste of time. Submitted by Divya (New Delhi, India) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Asoka review
$22.39 Robert Zemeckis scored a huge hit with 1985's BACK TO THE FUTURE, a film that became a genuine 1980s classic and began a successful trilogy. Taking the teen comedy a place it had never been before, on a trip to the 1950s via the 1980s, and fusing it with a time travel adventure, the film quickly became a blockbuster and established itself as a high point of 1980s pop culture. This special boxed set contains all three of Marty McFly's and Doc Brown's adventures traveling back and forth between the 1950s, the 1980s, and the 19th and 21st centuries in Doc's customized DeLorean. $10.05 A group of street-tough Manhattan teens fight, party, take drugs, have sex and scoff at the consequences in this unflinching account of one day in their lives. Larry Clark's controversial, bleak portrait of societal decay originally garnered an NC-17 rating, which the filmmakers surrendered, opting instead to release the film unrated.

$9.69 This uniquely 1970s blend of swords, sorcery, science fiction, kung-fu, fascism, and nuclear holocaust was director Ralph Bakshi's first venture into fantasy after his grim urban epics STREETFIGHT and HEAVY TRAFFIC. In a postapocalyptic future that appears as a blend of World War II Europe and J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, a pint-size wizard named Avatar (Bob Holt, sounding like Peter Falk) must save the world from a band of fascist mutants controlled by his evil twin brother, Blackwolf (Steve Gravers), who likes to confuse enemy armies by projecting films of Adolf Hitler speeches during attacks. Painted live-action footage of advancing Nazi armies contrasts with Saturday-morning-cartoon-style animation of fairies and elves as Avatar travels through various magical and radioactive realms on his quest. Aiding him are a sexually promiscuous fairy queen (Jesse Wells), a hot-blooded warrior elf (Mark Hamill, fresh from his role in STAR WARS) and Peace (David Proval), a misunderstood robot rebelling against his Blackwolf-controlled programming. A bizarre and psychedelic meditation on magic vs. technology, this cult film still finds an audience on college campuses and will prove quite rewarding to viewers in the right frame of mind.
