Asoka inherited India's throne in third century B.C. The Indian dynasty was poised to conquer the entire peninsula and the king began his reign by leading the charge. However, the emperor found greater meaning in the love of two women and was soon transformed, renouncing warfare and adopting the principles of the Buddha. This 2001 Indian biopic of the peaceful leader is a work of great political and dramatic significance. Asoka Reviews: "...The cast is exemplary. Bollywood heart-throb Shah Rukh Khan is excellent....Enthralling..."
-- Rachel Dwyer, Sight and Sound "...A sprawling widescreen historical epic laced with Bollywood musical numbers, melodramatic romance, spectacular locations and violent battle scenes....Khan cuts a dashing figure as a soulful hunk..."

Asoka Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Best of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor's performances, along with an excellently written script, make Asoka the best Bollywood movie I've ever seen. The drama; music; choreography; and pagentry of this film, plus it's surprise climax, will pull at your heart strings like a master puppeteer.
This majestic epic is a must-see, especially for those unfamiliar with bollywood films. Submitted by natasha.small (Bowie, Maryland USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Waste of time! This is just another cheap entertainment from India which does not intend to define/redefine or depict the history of the times of Asoka nor does it contribute a bit to the Art of Cinema. total waste of time. Submitted by Divya (New Delhi, India) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$8.75 Full of pride, Cassiopeia compares her daughter's beauty to that of Hera. Angered, the queen of the gods has Poseidon unleash the monstrous beast Craken to destroy their village unless Cassiopeia's daughter, Andromeda, is sacrificed. Perseus, the son of Zeus, becomes enchanted with the breathtaking beauty and is determined to save her from this fate. The young hero, armed with a magical shield, a winged stallion and a mechanical owl, discovers the only way to defeat the monster is with the head of Medusa. The gods watch and intervene on Perseus' quest to save his beloved.
This was legendary special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen's last film before he retired from creating movie magic. L.A. LAW's Harry Hamlin stars as the Greek mythological hero Perseus who fights snake-haired Medusa and two-headed dogs to save the lovely Andromeda (Judi Bowker). Laurence Olivier, as Zeus, is one of the many screen legends in this adventure. Burgess Meredith, Claire Bloom, Maggie Smith and Ursula Andress round out the cast as the Gods of Mount Olympus.
Director Desmond Davis was camera operator on TOM JONES and A TASTE OF HONEY, two influential early 1960s British films. Writer Beverly Cross was one of the writers on 1963's Ray Harryhausen film, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS.

$8.79 SUPERFLY, along with COFFY and SHAFT, completes Blaxploitations's best known
triumvirate. One of the highest-grossing pictures of 1972, SUPERFLY became an instant classic, and established director Gordon Parks firmly in Warner Brothers' sights to make THREE THE HARD WAY in 1974. Parks was one of the first African American directors to get financing from a major Hollywood studio to make the 1969 film THE LEARNING TREE.
Super Fly is a cocaine dealer who begins to realize that his life will soon end with either prison or his death. He decides to build an escape from the life by making his biggest deal yet, converting the coke to cash and running off to start a new life. The problem is that the Mob does not have a retirement plan and will give him a choice of staying and selling for them or dying if they find out his intentions. With a terrific score by Curtis Mayfield and a star wearing threads to match, SUPERFLY is chock full of the sass, flash, and action Blaxploitation is known for.

$6.99 Terry Dolittle (Whoopi Goldberg) is a brilliant but underappreciated data entry clerk who works for Manhattan's First National Bank under the watchful eye of her dictatorial boss Mr. Page (Peter Goetz). Terry often chats with clients via her terminal, which occasionally picks up Russian television. The tides of Terry's life turn when one day she picks up a transmission from a British spy trapped in Eastern Europe, who has the code name of Jumpin' Jack Flash; he enlists Terry's help in securing an exit contract, sending her on quirky excursions to help him escape and avoid foul play. Thus ensues a convoluted mission where Terry is on the run from the KGB, kidnapped while in a phone booth (phone booth and all), injected with a truth serum, and attempts to get a crucial message to Jack before the Russians have their way with him. She also manages to find love, get back at her boss, and do a great Mick Jagger impression to the fantastic soundtrack of music from the 60s. This is Whoopi in top form!
