Based on the legend of the real-life daugher of the last Russian czar, ANASTASIA combines imaginative animation and lively songs to tell the story of a princess who escapes a horrible execution and mysteriously reappears after being thought dead. When a team of swindlers, Dimitri (John Cusack) and Vladimir (Kelsey Grammer), recruit Anya (Meg Ryan), a spunky amnesiac orphan, in their plot to defraud the Dowager Empress (Angela Lansbury) with a faux Romanov heir, little do they know their carefully coached fake is the real thing. But the resurgence of the long-lost Anastasia also attracts the attention of the scary Rasputin (Christopher Lloyd), who, with his hilarious sidekick, Bartok the bat (Hank Azaria), schemes to do in the last Romanov. Though much lighter (thankfully for children) than the 1956 Anatole Litvak-directed ANASTASIA adapted from Marcelle Maurette's play, this movie is still packed with thrills, chills, and romance. The first animated feature from 20th Century Fox, the film is directed by longtime collaborators Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. Anastasia Reviews: "...Finely executed animation....A charming film..."

-- Lisa Osborne, Box Office "...The action here is alive and energetic, and the train sequence is genuinely thrilling..."

| | Polar Express DVD (2004) Full Screen
Anastasia review
$9.85 Director Robert Zemeckis revolutionized the art of animated film in 1998's WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT by dropping cartoon characters into the same frame with flesh-and-blood actors. In THE POLAR EXPRESS, live action and animation have merged seamlessly, resulting in sparkling super-realism. A landmark technique Zemeckis and his Sony Pictures Imageworks team call "Performance Capture" perfectly suits the tenor of this wondrous children's Christmas story by Chris Van Allsburg. A disillusioned little boy, just old enough to doubt the existence of Santa Claus, has the adventure of a lifetime one fateful Christmas Eve. Clad in his pajamas, he climbs aboard a magic train to the North Pole, driven by a kindly train conductor (voiced by Tom Hanks who starred in both of Zemeckis's Academy-Award winning films FORREST GUMP and CASTAWAY). Among myriad jaw-dropping moments, the train plummets brakeless through crystalline mountains in a simulated roller coaster ride. Going off the rails, skidding sideways, and snaking violently across a frozen lake, the train arrives at the North Pole (a vast, glowing city of brick buildings). At that moment, the car carrying the kids detaches and they're sent tumbling down never-ending chutes and slides until they land in the middle of Santa's Workshop. With its fascinating tale and impressive technical frolics, THE POLAR EXPRESS is destined to become both a holiday classic and a new turning point in the art of animated cinema.
Tom Hanks stars in this Robert Zemeckis holiday film.

| | Best Of Fractured Fairytales - Vol. 1 DVD (2005) Special Edition
Anastasia movie DVD
$7.79 While Jay Ward's classic 1960s cartoon series THE ROCKY & BULLWINKLE SHOW mainly chronicled the Cold War intrigues of its moose and squirrel heroes, the series featured an equally iconic cast of supporting characters in smart and sophisticated between-scene segments. One of the most beloved of these was FRACTURED FAIRY TALES, which twisted well-known children's stories into zany parables like "Cutie and the Beast," "Riding Hoods Anonymous" "Slow White and Nose Red," and "Sweeping Beauty." Clever and funny with a decidedly grownup appeal, this nostalgic collection presents 15 of the best Fractured Fairytale cartoons.
