Alakina Mann, Christopher Eccleston, Eric Sykes, Fionnula Flanagan, James Bentley, Nicole Kidman - Director: Alejandro Amenabar THE OTHERS begins with a close-up of a woman screaming. By the time this intense film ends, everyone watching ... Full Descriptionit will be screaming and gasping. Nicole Kidman stars as Grace, a woman raising two children by herself in a creepy mansion. World War II is over, but Grace's husband never returned. Meanwhile, the two children, Anne and Nicholas, must constantly stay in the dark because they are deathly allergic to light. Then one day three people show up to take over for Grace's disappeared staff, and trouble starts to brew. The odd trio--an aging nanny, an elderly gardener, and a young mute girl--seems to have a slightly different agenda than Grace and the children do. But when Anne starts talking to strange, unseen people, the scares start building to an incredible climax.
Alejandro Amenábar's highly stylized English-language debut is one of the better haunted-house films of the past few years. Not only did Amenábar write and direct the film but he composed the eerie music as well. Nicole Kidman is outstanding as the overprotective mother trying to save her children, while Fionnula Flanagan excels as the nanny with a deep, dark secret. Because the children must remain in darkness, Grace must lock every door behind her, to make sure that the children don't accidentally enter a brightly lit room; it is a marvelous horror-film device that Amenábar uses to perfection.Theatrical release: August 10, 2001 Others Reviews: "...An absorbing ghost story with a twist ending of SIXTH SENSE proportions..." -- 4 out of 5 stars

Others Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Great Film, Ho-hum Extra The single-disc version is the one to get, because in the two-disc set, the second disc is loaded with repetitive and boring material. Still, this is a wonderful film and well worth owning, especially if you like ghost stories. The premise is similar to “The Sixth Sense,” but this is a much more stylish film, and Nicole Kidman proves beyond all doubt that she has the acting chops to match her beauty. The pacing is slow, but never tediously so, and Kidman’s character, Grace, is very well developed.
Fionnula Flanagan turns in a subtly disturbing performance as the housekeeper/nanny. The children, too, are quite impressive, considering the complexity of the emotions they are called upon to convey. They suffer from Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP for short), an extremely rare but frighteningly real disease where exposure to sunlight causes third degree burns to the skin. We never see the effects of the disease in the film, but the fact that the very idea of the effects of XP are so horrific adds to the tension.
While the special effects mostly consist of computer-generated fogs and mists, they contribute immensely to the overall effect of the film.
More unsettling than out-and-out scary, “The Others” can still induce some dandy nightmares, so although it is only rated PG-13, I would strongly recommend that it not be viewed by younger children – Heck, my little sister is 42 years old and she had bad dreams for a week after watching it. I give the film 5 stars, but the two-disc set only warrants four.
