Closed Captioned; Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; Director's Comments Keith Gordon's WAKING THE DEAD is a mysterious psychological drama concerning a lawyer who is running for U.S. congress. When he begins to see intense visions of his supposedly deceased girlfriend, he starts questioning his sanity.
Fielding Pierce (Billy Crudup) is a promising young congressional candidate who becomes obsessed with the idea that his dead lover, Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), is still alive. Because of her involvement with a group called Sanctuary that harbors Chilean dissidents, Sarah is presumably killed in a car bombing. However, Fielding is never completely convinced that she's truly gone and years later begins to see and hear her presence. Filled with revealing flashbacks, the film follows the deeply involved romance of the ambitious Fielding and the idealistic Sarah during the 1970s while also portraying Fielding's struggle to win his congressional bid in the 1980s. As his political campaign progresses, so does his belief that Sarah is still alive, leading him to question his sanity and begin a desperate search to find her.
WAKING THE DEAD is an eerily atmospheric drama, awash in chilling shades of black, white, and gray. Director Keith Gordon's use of flashback and nonlinear storytelling effectively conveys the deep power of memory and love that transcends traditional conceptions of time. Alternating between the past and the present, Gordon's adaptation of the novel by Scott Spencer is a dreamy, mysterious affair that features supremely convincing lead performances by Crudup and Connelly as well as solid supporting turns by Janet McTeer and Hal Holbrook.
Theatrical release: March 24, 2000.
The film premiered at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival.
Billy Crudup and Jennifer Connelly also appear together in 1997's INVENTING THE ABBOTTS.
Robert Dillon was nominated for Best Screenplay in the Independent Spirit Awards.

$9.69 A saturnine vision of the universe and an interest in the female form bordering on adoration have been two constants of Dennis Hopper's directorial work. Both are on display in this neo-noir, starring Don Johnson as cagey drifter Harry Madox, who picks up a job from used car lot owner George Harshaw (Jerry Hardin), soon after arriving in a small Texas town. Attracting women is not one of Harry's problems, and he's soon involved with Harshaw's innocent young bookkeeper, Gloria Harper (Jennifer Connelly), and his tough, sexy wife, Dolly (Virginia Madsen). An ambitious sort, Harry is also planning to rob the local bank. But things ...

$16.49 From his current post in Antarctica, British glaciologist Matt (Kieran O'Brien), recalls how he met Lisa (Margo Stilley), a 21-year-old American student. They were at a rock concert at London's Brixton Academy, and he took her back to his apartment for sex. This began a brief relationship, which is revealed as Matt remembers and comments on its milestones--mainly the other concerts they attended and their significant sexual experiences--before their initial sexual attraction waned and they were forced to part.
The titular nine songs are comprised of concert performances by 1) Primal Scream, 2) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, 3) Elbow, 4) Michael Nyman, 5) Super Furry Animals, 6) The Dandy Warhols, 7) Von Bondies, 8) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club again, and 9) Franz Ferdinand. Shot on often-blurry, handheld digital video from an audience perspective, these scenes have a you-are-there effect. The sequences involving Matt and Lisa are intimate and realistic (be warned--the sex in the film is real and graphic), conveying everything one needs to know about their relationship with only the most rudimentary dialogue. With this brief, dreamlike work, director Michael Winterbottom ...
