Big Band Music Buffs Must See
By today's standards, the Benny Goodman Story wouldn't make even the most sensitive movie buffs radar screen. That said, this movie will appeal only to older viewers seeking to re-engage with the world they knew as a child. Steve Allen and Donna Reed were true period actors providing the proper amounts of emotion be they love or angst. This love story encompasses both the love of music and the interpersonal love of people who devote their lives to it. All in all, the schmaltz, and hokum that were the 50's are gloriously relived in The Benny Goodman Story.

Big Bands Era
Thoroughly enjoyed this movie when I first saw it many years ago. Seeing it again brought it all back and I enjoyed it again and will watch it again with my grandchildren The music of the big bands which brought swing music to us in the war years was always uplifting and Glenn Miller was in aclass of his own. this has been a very successful purchase for me.

Mostly accurate dramatization
With some drama added for effect, the story of Benny Goodman is told. All the clarinet playing heard is actually done by Benny, and to see some of the other musical "greats" of his day is performing is terrific! Steve Allen, a talented musician in his own right, learned to play clarinet for this movie so he would not be just "faking it", as he played the role of Benny. G-rated, and wonderful music of a by-gone era.
