An extremely handsome, self-involved, brooding young man escapes the realities of his street life through a series of fantasies of incredible beauty. Obsessed with his own perfection, he lives in a dreamworld of fantastic colors, magnificent music, elaborate costumes and strikingly handsome males. But reality constantly intrudes through the depraved lives of the other street people, through the harsh and ugly sounds outside and through the visits of his "johns."
Before the art duo Pierre et Gilles, before fashion photographer David LaChapelle, before the artist Jeff Koons, and before the neo-Pop movement broke, there was director James Bidgood and his film PINK NARCISSUS. A cult classic, it is so considered more for its highly artistic production values than for its narrative.
The film is essentially a piece of gay erotica (more erotic than explicit) about an impossibly handsome young man (played by Bobby Kendall), obsessed with his own beauty and youth, who escapes the realities of street life through intricately choreographed fantasies in which he portrays a Roman slave, a matador, a wood nymph, and a harem boy. Characterized by searingly bright colors and highly stylized visual elements (sets, props, and costumes), Bidgood's design for the film has been endlessly emulated by commercials and photographers to this day. PINK NARCISSUS is a "must see" for anyone interested in contemporary art, the pre-Stonewall sensibility, or the history of underground film.

Exotic erotic dreams The film explores the fantasies of a young man in a dream-like series of visions. The over-all color scheme is pink. There are many disolves as the young man changes visions. There are many frontal shots of nude bodies never obscuring the penis of the person. The range of his dreams is wide. This is the type of movie that gets your attention and keeps it.
My only reservation is the video quality which is no better than a mediocre VHS tape with lots of very grainy sections almost the entire DVD. When I finished watching my reaction was why did they not make this look as good as many old porno tapes that have been transfered to DVD?
