Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re Written by late Polish director Krysztof Kieslowski and Krysztof Piesiewicz (the team that made the trilogy BLUE, WHITE, and RED) and directed by German master Tom Tykwer (RUN LOLA RUN), HEAVEN is the first part of a trilogy (the other parts are called HELL and PURGATORY, for which there are no production plans in place.) Cate Blanchett is Philippa, a strong-willed English woman who teaches in Turin, Italy. At school she witnesses young students torn apart by drug addictions, poverty, and family struggles. Her husband, similarly, died of a drug overdose. She takes the law into her own hands when she decides to go after a major drug czar. But when her plan goes terribly wrong, and she's taken into custody and accused of being an international terrorist, she finds herself in a hell she never imagined. Her only hope is Filippo (Giovanni Ribisi), a young cop and translator who wants to help her. Tykwer delivers a visually stunning film with HEAVEN, using aerial photography, 360-degree pans, and gorgeous wide-angle shots to deliver a dreamlike otherworldly feeling. The chemistry between Philippa and Filippo resonates through to the end of the film, while the smartly suspenseful story keeps viewers guessing about the fate of this destined duo. An understated piano score by Arvo Part completes the prolonged feeling of tension, intrigue, and ultimate escape, making HEAVEN an impressively successful merger of Kieslowski's eerily effective writing and Tykwer's stylish directing. Theatrical release: October 4, 2002 Heaven Reviews: "...When Twyker fully hits his stride, the effect is stunning..."
-- Nick Roddick, Sight and Sound "...HEAVEN is vintage Kieslowski -- a movie that operates on so many levels one almost needs a mental elevator to keep track of the nuances..."
-- Wade Major, Box Office "In HEAVEN the Australian dramatic chameleon Cate Blanchett gives the most compelling screen performance of her career....A film whose formal elegance is matched by its depth of feeling..."

The star power of Cate Blanchett (THE SHIPPING NEWS, THE LORD OF THE RINGS) and Giovanni Ribisi (GONE IN 60 SECONDS, BOILER ROOM) propels this luminous and intensely haunting motion picture from the acclaimed director of RUN LOLA RUN and WINTER SLEEPERS. Philippa (Blanchett), a British teacher living in Turin, Italy, has watched helplessly as her husband and friends have fallen victim to drug overdoses. To compound her desperation, the police -- who are complicit in the actions of Turin's biggest drug dealer -- have completely ignored Philippa's repeated offers of information. So, with the unexpected help of a sympathetic police officer (Ribisi), Philippa feels she has nothing to lose by taking divine justice into her own hands. A probing exploration of the modern world and its moral choices -- you'll be mesmerized by Philippa's transformation from grieving widow to wanted fugitive on a journey through retribution and redemption, innocence, and crime!

$10.29 In 1990, novelist Paul Auster was asked to contribute a Christmas story to the New York Times. The resulting piece, "Auggie Wren's Christmas Story," forms the basis for his screenplay for SMOKE. Directed by Wayne Wang and set in a Brooklyn cigar store, Auster expanded the story to include four other characters whose lives intertwine with Auggie Wren's. As Auggie, the manager of the store that serves as a neighborhood meeting place, Harvey Keitel gives a restrained, mellow performance. The other characters, Paul (William Hurt), a blocked writer; Rashid (Harold Perrineau Jr.), a troubled youth; Ruby (Stockard Channing), Auggie's former lover; and Cyrus (Forest Whitaker), Rashid's long-lost father, form a web of relationships over a few summer days. Auster, who had previously adapted his novel THE MUSIC OF CHANCE into a taut script, here exhibits a loose, almost improvisational style as he lets his characters simply talk about their lives. Wang eschews the big, somewhat melodramatic style he used in THE JOY LUCK CLUB for relaxed, natural direction that allows the actors, who are all terrific, to project an everyday realism seldom seen in American movies. The actual Christmas story appears at the end in a beautiful black-and-white montage, accompanied by a bittersweet Tom Waits song.

| | Cream BBC Sessions CD (2003)
Heaven review
$12.65 Recorded for the BBC between 1966 and 1968, the 22 songs on this set find Cream at their most concise. Only two songs break the four-minute mark, which is striking for a trio that blazed a trail as an improvisational live act with all three members soloing furiously and at great length. Recorded live specifically for radio broadcast, these tracks capture Cream's furious and sometimes raw interplay. The earliest sessions predate the release of their debut, FRESH CREAM, by a few months. While blues tunes--both covers and originals--make up a significant portion of their offerings, it's some of their stabs at their own brand of pop that are the most riveting. Progressive rock in the literal sense, "N.S.U.," "Wrapping Paper," the moody "Tales of Brave Ulysses,"and the slightly funky, rather Hendrix-like Strange Brew"all have a richly unique character, standing completely on their own terms apart from the era's blues revival or any other genre.
This is part of Polydor Records "BBC Sessions" series.

$14.76 Following the success of his 1999 film, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar presents TALK TO HER. Driven by similar themes of fate, destiny, magic, and chance happenings, TALK TO HER is the tale of two men whose lives intertwine unpredictably. Benigno (Javier Cámara) is a dedicated nurse working at a special clinic for coma patients. He is responsible for Alicia (Leonor Watling), a student of modern dance who he met only once, four years earlier, before she fell into a coma. Happy, open-minded, and full of hope, Benigno brings an air of joy and love to the clinic. Marco (Darío Grandinetti), a freelance journalist, has fallen in love with the famous female bullfighter Lydia (Rosario Flores). Though he does his best to be an attentive lover to her, he is haunted by his past, and is unable to step out of his own shell. When Lydia is gored and falls into a coma, placed in the same clinic as Alicia, Marco and Benigno instantly become friends. They are each other's perfect counterpart and it is instantly evident that they need each other and care for each other deeply. But it is not until after they part, and a new aspect of Benigno's personality surfaces, that the strength of their friendship is tested and proven.
Almodóvar has created a true work of art with TALK TO HER. Its photography offers ...

$9.69 This relatively little-known film is widely hailed by fans of the macabre. Truly ahead of its time, NIGHTMARE ALLEY is set in the gritty, surrealistic world of traveling carnivals, where eccentric people of all possible varieties interact on a daily basis. In a departure from his usual roles as the Hollywood leading man, handsome Tyrone Power plays a morally questionable circus apprentice determined to climb the carnival ladder no matter what the price. Powers shows immense range in what was arguably his finest role ever as the sometimes ...

Heaven video
$11.25 In the late 1960s, the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco, California, was a countercultural mecca whose ragtag assemblage of hippies, artists, writers, musicians, and other like-minded bohemians nurtured a stellar music scene that produced some of the greatest rock bands of all time. Filmed at San Francisco's legendary Family Dog Ballroom in September 1970, A NIGHT AT THE FAMILY DOG is an amazing document of the entire Haight-Ashbury scene distilled into one incredible night of performances from three of the era's most definitive bands: Santana, the Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane. Produced by poet and jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason as part of a documentary series for the National Educational Television Network, the concert film boasts two songs by Santana, three by the Grateful Dead (one of the only known Dead performances featuring original member Ron "Pig Pen" ...

$19.55 The bawdy anime series MABURAHO offers a comical story of romantic rivalry at a magical school for wizards. Despite being descended from a family of sorcerers with powerful DNA, 17-year-old Kazuki Shikimori is a clumsy, mediocre conjurer with little luck in either the magical or romantic arts. Fortunately for the bumbling teen, family connections have bought his way into the prestigious Aoi Academy of witchcraft, where he finds himself the object of desire for a trio of teenage witches vying for his enchanted genetic makeup. Based on a manga by Miki Miyashita, MABURAHO chronicles the girls' rivalry with comedy, romance, magical action sequences, and scads of sexual innuendo. This volume continues the racy anime series with episodes 16-18.
As if high school wasn’t difficult enough, Kazuki Shikimori is now dealing with life as a ghost! But that minor setback hasn’t deterred Yuna, Kuriko and Rin from trying to woo him. Although it appeared ...
