Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re; Sensor Matic Robin Williams performs his signature physical comedy in the title role of this musical-fantasy based on E. C. Segar's comic-strip hero, which finds the spinach-eating sailor searching for his missing father, meeting Olive Oyl, and coping with the bully Bluto. The burger-happy Wimpy is also featured in the colorful cast of characters.
The classic comic strip and cartoon hero comes to life in Robert Altman's film adaptation of the adventures of the spinach-munching sailor. After he's thrown from his ship during a storm, Popeye (Robin Williams) finds refuge in a quaint seaside town. There he rents a room from the Oyls and meets their daughter Olive (the perfectly cast Shelley Duvall). Olive is engaged to Captain Bluto (Paul Smith), a bully and ruffian who is in charge of collecting taxes for the mysterious Commandant. Popeye, who was orphaned at an early age, is in the midst of a desperate search for his missing father, but what he doesn't realize is that the shipwreck has brought him unexpectedly close to his final destination. In bringing his own distinct vision to E. C. Segar's legendary hero, Altman creates an atmosphere that is breezy, loose, and filled with slapstick shenanigans. Williams portrays Popeye with a physically comic flair that is both honest and energetic--as do the rest of the cast members, including frequent Altman contributors Duvall, Paul Dooley, and David Arkin. Harry Nilsson's songs add to the lighthearted affair, making POPEYE an enjoyable family viewing experience all around.
Theatrical Release: December 12, 1980.
POPEYE was shot on location in Malta.
After a long pre-production period in which the script was passed from one director to another (including Hal Ashby, Arthur Penn and Mike Nichols), Robert Altman ended up helming the project.
Robert Evans commissioned a script from the POPEYE comic strip creator E. C. Segar and Jules Feiffer after he was outbid for the rights to the screen version of ANNIE. At one point during the development of the project, Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin were signed on as Popeye and Olive Oyl.
Ray Walston (TV's MY FAVORITE MARTIAN) appears as Poopdeck Pappy.

Popeye was a great movie. I ordered Popeye for my 5 year old and he loved it and it had been a while since I saw it but it was still as good as I remembered it. Submitted by tinkerbell19782005 (Sumter, sc) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Popeye is a great family movie! Language, violence, and in-your-face sensuality are virtually non-existence in this movie. Some of the songs might be corny but other than that Popeye is a good movie that you can sit down with your kids and enjoy. Submitted by bengs (Kinta, OK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This is Great Stuff although panned by critics I originally saw this movie when it hit theaters. It was great then and it's still great.
It is pretty unique as movies go, but it's very well cast and perfectly portrayed. It is very much like the cartoons it was modeled after and it is entertaining in the extreme.

$10.29 Based on a story by STAR WARS creator George Lucas, WILLOW is director Ron Howard's fantasy world of medieval adventure. WILLOW stars Val Kilmer as Madmartigan, a swashbuckling warrior, and Warwick Davis as the title character. In a mythical kingdom, the evil sorceress Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh) plots to kill all infants so that the newborn princess, Elora, will never take over the throne. But a midwife sets the baby adrift in a river, and she is rescued by Willow, a farmer in Nelwyn, a peaceful village of trolls, fairies, and little folk. Willow and Madmartigan begin a quest to deliver the baby from evil while being chased by Queen Bavmorda's daughter, Sorsha (Joanne Whalley), sent to bring the baby back to Nockmaar. Director Howard benefited from his affiliation with George Lucas on the film--Lucas's company, Industrial Light and Magic, contributed the Oscar-nominated special effects. Lucas, the executive producer of WILLOW, went on to create a series of books based on the world of WILLOW, the SHADOW WAR series.

$6.89 When a laser-armed Department of Defense robot named Number 5 gets zapped by a lightning bolt, he "malfunctions" and starts spouting peace slogans and developing a human-like consciousness. Naturally, the newly pacifist machine wants out of the military and escapes. As a frantic search for the creature begins, Number 5 settles down in his new home, with a gentle young woman named Stephanie (Ally Sheedy), who has every intention of holding on to her find, teaching Number 5 about popular culture and other mysteries of life. Thoroughly convinced that the robot is alive, she develops a strong bond with the creature. In order to prevent his capture by the military--who view Number 5 as an armed-and-dangerous weapon--the pair must convince his inventor, a reclusive scientist named Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg), that he is truly alive and more than just a metal machine. The highly innovative robot created for director John Badham's film brings to mind other lovable science fiction icons such as E.T. and R2D2 from STAR WARS.
Something wonderful has happened--Number Five is alive! Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy co-star in this high tech comedy adventure about Number Five, a robot who escapes into the real world after he short circuits in an electrical storm and decides that he's human. Because he's carrying destructive weapons, the Defense Department and his designer (Guttenberg) are desperate ...

$15.65 John Sturges's adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's short novel, often regarded as an allegory of the latter part of the writer's career, stars Spencer Tracy as Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman who has been nearly three months without a significant haul. Heaped with ridicule by other fisherman, he once again pushes off in his decrepit ketch, hoping that this trip will finally bring success. After a time at sea he hooks a powerful marlin that drags the man's tiny craft for a couple of days. Santiago engages in an epic battle with the monster, his hands nearly cut to ribbons as he's pushed to the limit of his dwindling strength. At rest during lulls in this war, he has dreams of his stronger and younger self, only to awaken to reality. At length, through guile, experience, and endurance, he lands the hefty marlin with a harpoon and secures him to the side of his boat. But a new danger arises, in the form of a school of hungry sharks that attacks the boat, attempting to seize his catch. Tracy's work is memorable in this stagy adaptation of the well-loved literary work.

$7.89 This slick and groovy film was born in the pages of a comic by Peter O'Donnell. An orphan who was raised by a corrupt casino owner, Modesty Blaise is no stranger to a life of crime. In a room full of thugs, she will readily outfight, outsmart, and outsleuth any of them. That is, until a longtime enemy kills her surrogate father and threatens to take control of the casino. By using any means necessary, Modesty must overpower the villains, like the monomaniacal female assassin in Quentin Tarantino's artful KILL BILL. Not surprisingly, Tarantino presents this kick-ass action adventure.

Popeye DVD
$10.19 Picked up after a well-received showing at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE is a low-budget comedy about a family road trip from Albuquerque to California. The story begins when young Olive (Abigail Breslin) is given a shot at the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant, and manages to coerce her family into driving west in their worn-down VW van. Olive's father, Richard (Greg Kinnear), takes charge of the trip, while her mother, Sheryl (Toni Collette), brother Dwayne (Paul Dano), uncle Frank (Steve Carell), and eccentric grandfather (Alan Arkin) all come along for the ride. What follows resembles a budget-stricken version of PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES: seemingly endless (and hilarious) mishaps befall the family as they wind their way across the country. Couple this with the witty interplay between a well-drawn set of dysfunctional characters, and that's the LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE formula in a nutshell; all the audience needs to do is sit back and enjoy the ride.
The grainy texture of co-directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris's film may initially startle viewers unaccustomed to the indie film world. But its a testament to the cast and crew's efforts that the limitations imposed on the filmmakers are long forgotten by the end of the film. Any concerns about visual murkiness give way to belly laughs and bemusement as the road trip ends and the beauty pageant begins. Likely to have a broad appeal, Dayton and Faris's film resembles a version of NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION directed with the pithy eye of Todd Solondz (WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE), and it's to the movie's credit that it manages to successfully marry these two seemingly disparate worlds.

$14.35 After starring in the 1950s classic PERRY MASON, legendary actor Raymond Burr created another indelible character with the 1960s television drama IRONSIDE. Smart and suspenseful, the series distinguished itself with its disabled protagonist, a multicultural cast, an indelible theme song by composer Quincy Jones, and time-capsule plotlines that tackled '60s topics like hippies and civil rights. This collection presents the first five episodes of the nostalgic series' debut season.
Chief of Detectives Robert Ironside (Raymond Burr) is shot down by a sniper's bullet while vacationing at a remote cabin. Surviving the assassination attempt, Ironside is left paralyzed from the waist down. Confined to a wheelchair, he becomes the head of ...
