Commandos, posing as German soldiers, parachute into a city to rescue a supposed allied general from a Nazi hideaway fortress that can only be reached by cable car
During World War II, Allied agents are handpicked and sent to rescue an important American general held in the Schloss Adler, an impregnable German fortress high in the Bavarian Alps.
Richard Burton stars as Major John Smith, a British agent during WWII who is in charge a group of six Allied soldiers given the task of rescuing an American general--who is reportedly in possession of the plans for D-Day--from a seemingly impregnable German fortress located high in the Bavarian Alps. Assisting Smith is the sole American in the operative, Lieutenant Morris Schaffer (Clint Eastwood), a fierce soldier skilled with an array of deadly weapons. As the men penetrate the fortress, facing an endless supply of German soldiers, it becomes apparent that some members of the small Allied team may not be who them seem to be. Full of thrilling action set pieces, the screenplay was written by Alistair MacLean, adapted from his own best selling novel.
Film was originally rated M by the MPAA, but was re-rated PG when the M rating was discontinued.
Shot in Panavision.

Great transfer of a classic! Richard Burton is the leading man here but Clint Eastwood backs him up admirably. This is one of those great films that has mystery, suspense, action, great sets and location and outstanding acting. The transfer to DVD is crisp, clean, and well saturated. My wife hates war movies but she liked the plot and character development as well as the suprise ending. Well done all around! Submitted by a reviewer (Dubuque, IA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
