| | Echo & The Bunnymen Heaven Up Here CD (1981) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Siouxsie And The Banshees - Seven Year Itch review
$9.09 Though it yielded only one minor hit single in the band's native England, HEAVEN UP HERE is considered by many to be the ultimate Echo and the Bunnymen album. The album is drenched in an aura of mystery that is fueled by the swirling, epic sound of guitarist Will Sergeant and drummer Pete De Freitas. The music is so powerful that singer Ian McCulloch's vague, almost nonsensical lyrics take on a profundity.
While tracks like "The Disease," a desolate two-chord sound-poem based on a solitary rhythm guitar and a haunting recorder passage, do feature some incisive lyrics, most of McCulloch's words seem intent on reinforcing the dark, brooding atmosphere of the music. The opening "Show of Strength," a soaring song that is driven by one of Sergeant's gripping guitar passages, sets the tone for the album, creating a heroic soundscape that crests with the majesty of "A Promise." The latter is a hypnotic song in which drummer DeFritas showcases his explosive style and McCulloch provides one the most compelling vocal performances of his career. While HEAVEN UP HERE may lack the hit singles that made the Bunnymen alternative-radio ...
| | Cure Join The Dots: B-Sides & Rarities, 1978-2001 CDs (2004) Remastered
Siouxsie And The Banshees - Seven Year Itch DVD
$43.15 Recorded between 1978 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, and Johnny Black.
A remarkable four-disc set of B-sides and rarities, JOIN THE DOTS serves as a sort of alternate history for the Cure, one of the world's most beloved post-punk/alt-rock bands. Painstakingly compiled by Cure frontman (and the group's only constant member) Robert Smith, DOTS provides dozens of glimpses into the literal flip-side of their singles by collecting many long-lost tracks, including the classic songs previously featured only on the cassette version of STARING AT THE SEA: THE SINGLES.
Disc one begins in the late 1970s and consists of early tracks that show the Cure in a wildly adventurous mode--tearing into the punky "Pillbox Tales," drifting through the gloomy "Descent," and bouncing along to the oddly danceable "Throw Your Foot." By disc two, Smith and the lads have become college-rock heroes, and despite their goth looks, they move steadily into poppier territory on songs such as the synth-laden "Breathe" and the upbeat "Hey You!!!," eventually settling into their dreamy post-DISINTEGRATION era on ...

Siouxsie And The Banshees - Seven Year Itch movie DVD
$10.59 Although rumors of the Cure's demise circulated after 2000's BLOODFLOWERS, and even frontman Robert Smith claimed the group was finished on numerous occasions, the revered post-punk band remained united, and released this self-titled album in 2004. Expertly timed to follow the excellent JOIN THE DOTS rarities box set and ride a wave of adoration from hip, younger bands, THE CURE marks a new chapter for the goth-rockers, while incorporating many of the quartet's key sonic elements.
Though Smith doesn't seem inclined to write lighter pop ditties on par with "The Lovecats" or "Let's Go to Bed," he's still happy to pen gloomy, distortion-filled rock songs and atmospheric mood pieces. Marked ...
| | Siouxsie & The Banshees Downside Up CDs (2004) Remastered
Siouxsie And The Banshees - Seven Year Itch video
$45.35 A long time ago, back in late '80s or so, CD box sets were unleashed upon the music-buying public. Box sets like the Led Zeppelin box or Aerosmith's Pandora's Box were mostly hits affairs, with a few rarities (B-sides, live tracks, demos) to entice both fan and newcomer. In later years, however, a new concept in anthologizing a band's career came to the multi-disc format: the B-side box set. This new and more complete way of packaging the lesser-known moments of a long-running band walks a fine line between a treasure trove of great material with better sound on a better format and just plain overkill, the kind of collection that no one but the most rabid fan would care about. In the case of Downside Up, Siouxsie and the Banshees' contribution to the box set world, it's a little bit of both. On the one hand, there are not many newcomers to the band who need to hear the chaotic sound sculpture of "(There's A) Planet in My Kitchen," much less four discs of totally unfamiliar music. On the other hand, it would be a shame to miss out on some incredibly great music, albeit rather experimental and, at times, difficult. The first disc, especially, is loaded with what could arguably be ...
