WOW I'm a big fan of Tommy Lee Jones and when I saw that he was playing Ty Cobb I was bit bit stand-offish.
But...Oh my God...he attacked this role.
The entire cast was perfect.
This is not really a sports movie.
It's about a man who wound up in the spotlight doing what he loves.
It's about his imperfections and his perfections.
Thank you Cd Universe for having this...I couldn't find it anywhere else!!!

Sports Fans only Sports fans will like it. My husband gave it 3 stars, his brother gave it 4 stars. I got up to do the dishes after about 5 minutes. Enough said. Submitted by vskaggs (Willow Park, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Tommy Lee Jones at his best! Judging from the cover of this DVD you would never guess "Cobb" is one of the most hilarious and exciting movies ever made about a sportsman . And if you thought Tommy Lee Jones was funny in "The Fugitive" wait till you've watched this one! Jones gives a stunning performance as baseball's famous Ty Cobb.
I don't care much about sports in general and I know practically nothing about baseball. If your sentiments are the same, don't worry. The movie does not focus on baseball at all but takes a closer look at Cobb's personal life after his career was over. Tommy Lee Jones shows those comic and menacing traits in equal measures that we have come to know in a row of excellent films during the last 20 years or so. The dialogue between Jones and Robert Wuhl who plays the sportswriter hired to write Cobb's biography, is nothing less than spectacular, and even if Jones has the best lines, Robert Wuhl is a very good choice for the part as a "underdog". Ron Shelton directed this affair and it must surely be one of his best yet.
A note: I don't think product placing ever was considered as a viable way of financing this motion picture! When you hear Jones's remarks about the Coca Cola and Pepsi in the end you'll know why... Submitted by a reviewer (Hvidovre, Denmark) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Tommy Lee Jones should've gotten an Oscar Tommy Lee Jones carries this movie from start to finish. This is a great sports movie, but if he wasn't in it it would've stunk. Submitted by Blake (Brandon,MS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Cobb review
$10.85 Unlike other nostalgic baseball films (THE NATURAL, FIELD OF DREAMS), director John Sayles's EIGHT MEN OUT explores one of the darkest moments in the history of the sport--1919's infamous Black Sox scandal, when eight players on the heavily favored Chicago White Sox agreed to throw the World Series. Based on Eliot Asinof's 1963 book of the same name, the film investigates why the players--including the great Shoeless Joe Jackson, who many believe belongs in the Hall of Fame--would purposely lose the most important game of their lives. Set in the same time period as Sayles's MATEWAN, EIGHT MEN OUT shows how money and exploitative labor conditions destroy the purity of the game. Even though the film has no star parts and ends on a bleak note, EIGHT MEN OUT was the second Sayles film to receive financing from a major studio. Studs Terkel appears as the famous journalist Hugh Fullerton, who exposes the scandal, while Asinof ...

| | Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada DVD (2005) Full Frame; Widescreen
Cobb film
$10.25 Tommy Lee Jones takes his second turn in the director's chair with THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA, the follow-up to his 1995 western THE GOOD OLD BOYS. The action takes place on the border between West Texas and Northern Chihuahua in Mexico, which is a hot spot for illegal crossings. But Jones's movie ingeniously flips this dangerous yet all-too-common practice on its head, with a tale of a man hell-bent on crossing the border in the opposite direction.
The journey to Mexico begins when Pete Perkins (Jones) uncovers the identity of a Border Patrolman, Mike Norton (Barry Pepper), who has shot and killed his best friend, Melquiades Estrada (Julio Cedillo). Kidnapping Norton and forcing him to dig up Estrada's body, Perkins straps the corpse to a horse, and informs Norton that he will be traveling with them to Mexico. Once there, they will bury Estrada according to instructions he gave Perkins prior to his death. Jones paints Norton as a mean-spirited individual; caught up in a loveless relationship with his wife, Lou Ann (January Jones), Norton's day job frequently involves him him either exploding in a violent rage or idly masturbating over a well-thumbed copy of Hustler. The two men don't exactly bond on their journey, the wedge that's been forced between them being far too great for them to reconcile their differences. But Jones coerces a riveting tale from Guillermo Arriaga script, with a choppy chronology reminiscent of Arriaga's own 21 GRAMS. Comparisons to Sam Peckinpah's masterfully bleak 1974 movie BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA are inevitable, although Jones's film has a tender edge that Peckinpah's nihilistic epic was never quite capable of reaching. A film that suggests Jones has a bright future ahead of him as a director, THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA is one of the most absorbing pieces of cinema to emerge in ...

| | Different From The Others DVD (1919) Black & White
Cobb movie DVD
$21.49 The first film to positively depict homosexual relations was released in Germany in 1919, 50 years before the gay liberation movement began in the US. A masterpiece of the silent era from acclaimed director Richard Oswald (AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS, LUCRETIA BORGIA) DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS starred one of the most popular German actors of the period, Conrad Veidt (THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, CASABLANCA). The film was a direct condemnation of the German penal code's Paragraph 175, which sentenced those who were guilty of "unnatural vice between men" to serve a prison sentence. This historical milestone positively depicts gay lifestyles, condemns the cruel system that forced them to live in terror, and advocated the freedom of the "third sex." Though initially a moderate success at the box office, the film was subjected to sabotage from anti-gay activists, and eventually banned under the Nazi regime. Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, head of the Institute of Sexology in Berlin, produced and starred in the film, and possessed the last print in his library; when this was raided by the Nazis, who burned everything, DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS was thought to have been lost for good. 43 years later a partial print was discovered in a Ukrainian archive in 1976. Combining this with still photographs and censorship documents, the current version was pieced together.
Veidt plays Paul Korner, a successful gay concert pianist who one night accepts an offer for a walk home from the shady Franz Bolleck, who intimates an interest in him. Upon arriving at their destination, Bolleck reveals his true intention: a blackmail threat to expose Korner's violation of Paragraph 175 if he refuses to pay up. While enduring this prolonged extortion, Korner falls in love with one of his piano students, but as Bolleck asks for increasing amounts of money, Korner gets fed up and goes to the courts. Condemning Bolleck for blackmail, they also sentence Korner to serve time for his homosexuality, and upon his release he finds that all of his music contracts have been terminated due to his now sullied reputation. The consequences of Korner's ...

Cobb video
$15.09 Internationally acclaimed Korean writer-director Ki-duk Kim (SPRING, SUMMER, FALL, WINTER... AND SPRING) has created a masterful, wholly original drama with 3-IRON, which follows the trials and tribulations of an odd young man, Tae-suk (Hee Jae), who spends his days putting flyers on people's doors just so he can check who hasn't taken them down after a day or two; believing those families to be away, he breaks into their homes and settles in for a while, cooking, cleaning, watching television, and sleeping, all done with an intoxicating charm. But one day he is caught by a troubled young woman, Sun-hwa (Seung-yeon Lee), whose husband, Min-kyu (Hyuk-ho Kwon), abuses her mentally and physically; when the husband returns home, Tae-suk uses the man's 3-iron to hit golf balls at him. Sun-hwa then goes off with Tae-suk, joining him on his journey to empty houses, where they pretend to be part of the vacationing family. But when they walk into an apartment and find a man dead, their world changes despite their attempts to protect it. It's at that point that director Kim really starts having fun. 3-IRON is an intense, enjoyable, mystical film filled with subtlety and tenderness. That is especially surprising since the two main characters, who find solace in each other's company, never speak a word.
