Set in October of 2002, THE RETURNER chronicles the last days before an apocalyptic interstellar war, and the two unlikely heroes who try to prevent the inevitable from happening. Sent back in time, Milly (Anne Suzuki) has the dubious honor of tracking down a fallen spaceship and assassinating the alien inside. As luck would have it, she lands in the middle of a gunfight between her soon-to-be accomplice Miyamoto (Takeshi Kaneshiro), a vengeful rock-n-roll vigilante, and Mizoguchi (Goro Kishitani), the unconscionable villain played with animated savvy. As Milly and Miyamoto befriend one another, stories from Miyamoto's troubled past emerge as well as from Milly's future--so it seems Milly is not only there to save the world from war, she's also come to rescue Miyamoto from his childhood pain. The sci-fi effects are dazzling, and the camera often spins around the action, heightening the sense of anxiety in the film. The plot keeps Mizoguchi in the mix when he greedily pilfers the alien from a military science lab, setting up the ultimate conflict on his oil-rig headquarters. So ironically, Milly realizes her mission is no longer to save the world from the warmongering aliens, but from humans driven by avarice.

Decent Many people think that this is a copy of several big time Hollywood movies, but considering that those movies where in and of themselves copies of Asian Movies, where are we left with this one. It is pretty good actually. Not the best in the world but it beats some of the bigger releases coming out this summer and fall. Buy it, watch it, but dont overthink it. Its just a fun movie. SEQUAL!!I like this movie better than the Matrix!!! I'd give this movie five plus star's if I could, and yeah I said it,I like this movie better than the matrix 1,2,and 3,and Equilibrium also."Why?," Oh I don't no maybe because it's fun, action packed, has a great style to it,and like 3 twist's,plus it's not boring which is very unlike the Matrix, and Equilibrium, I watched the Matrix maybe 3 times, and then didn't watch it for like a year, and this movie I watched like 12 times when I first got it,and more a few months down the road,so to me the replay values much higher, although it is a little cheesy at times, and so what!I think it keep's the story from dragging at a very stale boring pace, and lightens thing's up,a bit, which is good, because if you want to see boring realism then watch the flags of our father's movie, not this.
Anyway's the only thing people could call a downside is the unoriginality, still when it comes to all the different idea's that are in this movie,to tell you the truth I like the way they used the idea's better on this then how they were used in the original's.My only thing is I'd like to see a sequal,REALLY BAD!Because the end is very open ended, and I say screw the space time continuim,no one think's that hard on that kind of stuff anyway's.I mean if we get all these Matrix sequal's,why can't god be good to me,and give this very deserving movie a sequal....
