Carroll Ballard follows up his beloved THE BLACK STALLION with NEVER CRY WOLF, another inspiring adventure story that deals with the all-important concept of man versus nature. The film opens as the government dispatches Tyler (Charles Martin Smith), a solitary biologist, into the frozen wilds of the Yukon, to determine whether aggressive wolves are the reason for a greatly reduced caribou population in the region. During the course of his lonely assignment, the bespectacled scientist comes to understand the wolves' world, respect it, and even want to be a part of it. Not surprisingly, he also discovers that the white man is responsible for the caribou's depleted numbers--not the vilified wolves. When it appears that a group of angry hunters are going to ruthlessly murder any wolf that they see, he is forced to take a stance once and for all, endangering his own life in the process.
Ballard's visual epic, gorgeously photographed by Hiro Narita, proves his overflowing skill as a director. Once again, he chooses to rely on imagery to tell his story, rather than drowning out the visuals with unnecessary dialogue. Smith's inspired performance allows the audience to slip inside his mind, resulting in a deeply personal viewing experience.
Never Cry Wolf Reviews:
"...Powerful images and [a] comprehending feel of the wonders and mysteries of Mother Nature..."

outstanding A film which definitely diverts away from the "Hollywood" format. It not only holds your attention, but invokes some thought regarding the commercialization of land resulting in jeopardizing our vanishing animal population. OUTSTANDING! "Never Cry Wolf" is as good as it gets. I saw this movie on TV years ago and my wife just HAD to have it to see it all again. If you don't buy it, well then RENT it. Great movie for the whole family! Differs somewhat from the book by the same name from which it was adapted however it's still wonderful! A Timely Tale This story is ageless. The problem didn't disappear, and raising awareness is still important. The need for conservation is more critical today as wolf populations have been destroyed. Charles Martin Smith did a remarkable bit of acting, the location was exquisite and the stars, the aminals, perfect. The film is as timely in 2004 as it was when it was first released. An Entertaining and Beautiful Movie I love this DVD, which offers both full screen and widescreen options. Never Cry Wolf is one of those hidden gems that mainstream audiences aren't aware of, but it's a very entertaining and moving film. Charles Martin Smith plays a biologist who ventures into Alaska to study wolves. His voice-over narration and visual observations of the wolves, combined with breathtaking cinematography, make this film mesmerizing to watch. The hypnotic musical score and powerful visuals make it difficult to turn away from the screen. The movie is at times hilarious, and at other times sad (and subtly tragic), but always emotionally moving. I highly recommend it.
