Little House On The Prairie - Season 6 Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 'Little House....' maintains a fine combination of laughter If, perhaps, 'Little House On The Prairie's fifth season suffered from being rather erratic in the manner in which it conveyed so many of the lifechanging events taking place it sometimes lost sight of its own sense of perspective, with season six things settle down somewhat to reveal a highly effective series of adventures which in many ways is more reminiscent of the relaxed and measured tone of the early seasons.
Certainly it's true to say this season also introduces its own fair share of lifechanging events - Laura meeting Almanzo (her future husband), Nellie meeting and marrying Percival, the tragic death of Alice Garvey and Mary's newly born child in a house fire and Reverand Alden's marriage. There are also many episodes which focus on individual stories, such as 'Faith Healer' (about a preacher who cons his congregation into believing he has special powers), 'Crossed Connection' (involving the introduction of the telephone to Walnut Grove) and 'Darkness Is My Friend' (where escaped convicts hold Laura and Mary captives at the blind school). Overall season six is pretty impressive which much of the time at least rivals almost any 'Little House ...' season in terms of quality even though it falls a little short with perhaps three or four weaker episodes. Strangely, arguably the weakest episode of the lot (and a strong contender for weakest 'Little House ...' episode ever) is 'Halloween Dream' which is penned by the usually irrepressible Michael Landon.
There's plenty of warmth and laughter in this series especially from the Oleson's. Mrs Oleson especially seems in fine comedic form in her own evil way which makes a nice contrast to some of the more tearjerking and heartbreaking events which are, as always, a major feature of the 'Little House...' series.
Overall (and perhaps minus three or four of the weaker episides) 'Little House On The Prairie' season six is up with the very best 'Little House On The Prairie' has to offer and perhaps any drama series has to offer, generally.
There are also some fine extras including interviews with Dabbs Greer (Reverand Alden), Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson) and Dean Butler (Almanzo Wilder) in addition to an audio commentry by Alison Arngrim which all proves very enlightening.
The picture/sound quality of this series of 'Little House...' DVD releases has sometimes been disappointing. However, season six is better than most as many of the episodes look bright and sharp and the sound less muffled although the volume control still needs to be turned quite high. There are a few scenes cut, however, but this doesn't interfere with the enjoyment of the stories.
Season six turns out to be a truly fine season with its mixture of laughter and tears in a finely balanced combination. The overwhelming majority of these stories are as great as any of the stories from any of the seasons. 'Little House On The Prairie' was still at a peak.
