Perhaps the definitive sports Animé series, SLAM DUNK is about an unfocused, outsider teen who finds his place through the game of basketball. Sakuragi is a high school student whose unluckiness with girls has made him hot-headed and antisocial. When he meets Haruko, he is determined to become her boyfriend, and decides to join the basketball team because she likes the sport so much. Sakuragi shows an immediate playing talent, but he must deal with his suspicious teammates, particularly star player Rukawa and Haruko's brother and team captain Takenori. SLAM DUNK combines basketball action with the established genres of schoolyard comedy and romance. VOLUME ONE contains the first five episodes of the long running series.

Slam Dunk is truly one of the greatest animes ever created. It packs in drama, humor, action, and great characters all into one. Each of the characters are truly memorable, with deep histories, and eventual character development. The humor is hilarious and silly. The drama comes from the desire to win the championship along with many other side stories. The basketball games are extremely deep. They cover everything from lay-ups and free throws to alley-oops and boxing out. Although Volume 1 doesn't show all the characters or any real basketball games, the first five episodes are a perfect start to the show.
