Story Lloyd C. Douglas
Writer Philip Dunne
Richard Burton stars as Marcellus Gallio, the Roman centurian charged with overseeing the crucifixion of Christ. But when he wins Christ's robe in a gambling game at the foot of the cross, his life is forever changed. The first movie ever filmed in CinemaScope, "The Robe" was nominated for five Academy Awards in 1953, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Burton, and it remains on of the screen's greatest Biblical epics.

Fictional story of a Roman senator whose life is changed when he comes into contact with the robe that Christ wore when he was crucified.

Based on a best-selling novel by Lloyd C. Douglas, THE ROBE is one of the best Biblical epics of all time. Richard Burton stars as Marcellus Gallio, a Roman who, after leading the crucifixion of Christ, takes home Jesus’ robe and is subsequently torn by nightmares and guilt. A distraught Marcellus makes his way back to Palestine, where a humble attempt to discover more about the man who died by his hand puts him on a miraculous path toward redemption. Originally released in 1953, this crisp and vibrant film was one of the first to be filmed in beautiful, expansive CinemaScope. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best (Color) Cinematography, Best (Color) Costume Design, and Best (Color) Set Direction-Art Direction. Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, and Jay Robinson offer stellar supporting roles.

Leonard Doss was the technicolor consultant and Tom Connors, Jr. was the assistant director. Produced and distributed theatrically by 20th Century Fox. Shot in CinemaScope.

3 stars A Story of Faith
This is an early Richard Burton movie (long before Elizabeth Taylor enters his life), revolving around the fabled ability of the last garment of Jesus (the robe) to be able to resurrect the dead. Burton is a loyal Roman Tribune who becomes a convert to christianity and his personal stand against the brutal suppression of Rome and its evil emperor (magnificently portrayed by Jay Robinson, in an unforgettable tour-de-force of imperial derangement). I cannot say it is one of the "greats" but has its moments and Jay Robinson is not to be denied.

5 stars in a place far away, in a time long ago...
I write this as I listen to the soundtrack which I have on an old 33 1/3 record. Saw the film in the basement of St. Paul's church with mother, aunt and grandma in about 1957--went up front for a candy bar at intermission. I don't know if things like that happen now--simple, communal, special. for those of my era, recall the anticipation of films like The Robe, The Ten Commandments, Ben Hur. remember the publicity campaigns when going to the movies(in palaces)was special. The film is special as were so many of that time. Films were not too young--I was young and impressionable. The music is one of the best scores ever (especially the love theme of marcellus and Diana), the reds are deep, the armour supple, Victor Mature is very human(I mean that in the best sense--one of the world's wounded creatures). Seeing the film on tv--broadcast or vhs/dvd--is not the same as seeing it on screen. Seeing the film when you're about 5 or 6 years old in an era of these biblicals and costume epics on a big screen(or a smaller church screen) is special--and very personal and memorable. hope you like the film

Anno Domini: the seventh year of Augustus Caesar's reign. In the Roman province of Judea, Jews return to the city of their birth for the census. A bright star in the night over Bethlehem marks the birth of Jesus Christ. Years later, Roman commander Messala (Stephen Boyd), who was brought up in Judea, takes command of the Roman garrison in Jerusalem. His Jewish boyhood friend Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) greets him. Messala is delighted. But when Judah refuses to name Jewish patriots, Messala sentences him to the slave galleys and imprisons his mother, Miriam (Martha Scott), and sister, Tirzah (Cathy O'Donnell). Judah vows revenge. In BEN-HUR, William Wyler's much-lauded epic, the story of Judah's search for his mother and sister and his quest for revenge intersects with crucial biblical events such as the Sermon on the Mount and the crucifixion. Wyler gets fine performances from Heston, Boyd, Jack Hawkins (as a Roman admiral who befriends Judah), and Hugh Griffith (as an Arab sheik who dreams of racing his beautiful white horses ...

Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message, and the government's witch hunt for the alien. Made during the cold war--when Americans were obsessed with the destructive capabilities of the atomic bomb--THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, thanks to its beautiful pacing, excellent dialogue, and haunting score by Bernard Herrmann, is still a treat for contemporary audiences. The film soberly ...

Jennifer Jones won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her screen debut in this true story. Jones plays young French peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous, who sees a vision of a "beautiful lady" near her home in Lourdes in 1858. Based on the novel of the same name by Franz Werfel, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE explores Bernadette's trials and tribulations from her impoverished family to her difficulties at school to the derision her visions bring upon her and at last to her affliction with bone-marrow cancer. Under the incisive eye of director Henry King, the film is seen through Bernadette's perspective but at the same time focuses upon the effect that Bernadette has upon her family, her champions, and her detractors. The acting is excellent, and no detail has gone untouched in the art direction, costumes, and cinematography. ...

With a knack for capturing the bittersweet melancholy of working-class Americana, and well-known for his espousal of progressive politics, Bruce Springsteen has become a true American hero, and an enduring icon of the common people. This documentary examines the early years of "The Boss," told through the eyes of many who were close to him as his nascent superstardom gathered steam. Beginning with his time in his first band, the Castilles, and later with the Steel Mill, audiences relive those early days on the local New Jersey bar circuit, when fans regularly enjoyed three-hour long performances. After gaining a cult-like local following, and releasing a couple of albums to critical but not commercial success, the artist was signed to Columbia Records and created the seminal BORN TO RUN, the album that made Bruce Springsteen a household name. Looking back on this period of incubation are Richard Blackwell and Joseph Balencko, Springsteen's close school friends, as well as the Steel Mill's former manager, Carl Tinker West, and singer, Robbin Thompson. Castilles bassist Frank Marziotti and E Street Band member Vini Lopez shed further light on the history of this performer, who single-handedly changed the face of rock & roll. This DVD documentary traces the years Bruce Springsteen spent perfecting his art, via the various bands that he played with in the bars and nightspots of New Jersey to his signing with Columbia records and his first successful album Born To Run. The story continues into the 80s and reveals how this phenomenal artist captured the masses and had ...
